Inhaling gas by mistake

Same here, keeping a bowl cherried between hits wastes a lot of smoke. I almost always extinguish the bowl before lighting it again. Bowls last notably longer if the cherry isn't just left to burn up green between hits.

The question remains- why would he be inhaling gas if the flame went out? Once the lighter is lit the only way it'll go out is if the gas flow is stopped (in which case it he wouldn't inhale any gas) or if the flame is someone extinguished by wind or water or something.
 
^if you have many people in a rotation, it is definitely more wasteful to extinguish the bowl after each hit. your friends must have that really bad habit of talking while holding the pipe in their hand... the next guy in rotation should be ready to take his hit immediately when the last hit was finished. and besides, how do you 'extinguish' the bowl anyway? covering with a lighter or coin just stops air from entering, while the bowl is still hot and vaporizing a large quantity of THC and coating the pipe with resin. i prefer to smoke it while it's still fresh thank you.

and as stated before, many people shove the lighter flame deep into the bowl, which does not allow complete combustion and leaves plenty of unburned gas. because combustion is incomplete, the flame is not very hot and can go out very easily even while the gas flow is uninterrupted. flame requires fuel, air, and heat.

My friends and I are the exact opposite, and anyone is free to toke as much as they want. If someone were to take a real quick hit and try to pass the joint/pipe/bong (usually joints) they'd be told to chill on it for a bit, and pass it when they've had enough. It seems to work real well, and we find it much more pleasurable than the quick, rapid fire thing you've got going.

Everyone should have their own pipe.

Plus there's usually only 2 or three of us smoking, so if you try to do the whole hit'n'run thing, someone's usually still holding a hit when it gets passed to them.

Smoking should be pleasurable, not just to get high. None of my friends enjoy trying to hit it as fast as possible.

I usually extinguish the bowl by covering it with two fingers and continuing to hit it lightly with my finger off the carb (in order to keep inhaling the stuff that continues to vaporize), and when it's out I remove my fingers. When the bowl is still full to the point where the cherry would burn my fingers, I usually cover it with the metal part of the lighter and press very lightly on the cherry. It works and bowls last noticably longer when I do it then when I don't.

Most of the pot I smoke, I smoke alone, so I'm not usually passing a bowl around. As other people have said, when smoking with friends each one of us often takes a couple hits. I also don't smoke in a strict circle, so anyone who wants to hit it can take what they want until someone else wants some smoke. We also almost always have 2 or 3 pipes going at once (often one bong and two pipes) when we smoke.

I prefer to smoke with my friends in a more casual fashion then you speak of, because when I hang out with friends there's usually pot being smoked (if we're at a house or outside), so it's easier if we don't smoke in a specific order and we don't pass after every hit. Covering the bowl doesn't make the weed less fresh if you do it properly.
