WASHINGTON - Federal health regulators on Thursday fined the American Red Cross $16 million for sloppy screening of donated blood, the latest in a series of violations that have cost the group millions of dollars.

The Food and Drug Administration said in a statement that the group failed to take precautions to assure the safety of blood donations. Despite those oversights, the FDA says the U.S. blood supply appears to be safe.

Regulators fined the group nearly $10 million for mismanagement of blood products — including red blood cells, plasma and platelets — and over $6 million for faulty manufacturing practices. The violations occurred in fiscal years 2008 and 2009.

I don't even know what think.. Someone skrewed up...

They do this, but they wont let me donate blood because i "could potentially have mad cow disease"? They seriously wont let me donate blood because i lived in Europe in the 90s.

Come to think of it my buddy got Hep C in the 80's because the Red Cross, blood transfusion, there is a pattern of them fucking up...

Yeah, the RC is not permitted to do any blood collection etc... in Canada because of shit like this. IIRC it cost the gov a small mint to buy up most of their blood collection infrastructure (buildings, labs, and so on), but their screening is a LOT more stringent now. Almost too much so-- there is a lobby to get their blanket ban on homosexuals donating blood overturned.

I understand how this might be frustrating, but prion disease is absolutely horrific. It's one of those things they need to do whatever they can to prevent.
