Screw "theory". Is 5-HTP truly benefitial?

As an aside, I'd love to see some sources on how much 5-HTP actually does make it to the brain with or without the use of a peripheral decarboxylase inhibitor. I suspect that a significant amount does, since so many people find it therapeutic -- it seems unlikely to me that it's all completely placebo, heh.

Radiolabeled 5-htp and a CT scan, anyone? Seems to me this would be a fairly simple scientific experiment, other than synthing 5-htp with a radioactive atom in it.

I bet the lion's share never makes it to the CNS, simply because there are so many tissues in the periphery that use serotonin, and are a lot more accessible to albumin-bound amino acid precursors than the brain. However, since there aren't really all that many cells in the brain that use serotonin, relatively speaking, even if only a fraction of the dose makes it there, I bet each serotonin neuron sees a measurable rise in its stores of it after a dose of 5-htp.
 
I think I've asked this before, but would plugging 5htp increase odds of getting to the brain since you would be skipping 1st pass metabolism as well as the gut?
 
Theres other things your suppose to take with it to help it actualy absorb. B vitamins,magneisum, niacin, and something else all come in the 5htp i take and i can guarente u its not a crock of shit. I take it for depression and after rolling and it makes a huge differance. Theres been alot of studies proving it works to raise seratonin levels in your brain

I've seen some theorize on other sites that since receptor sites up-regulate in the absence of a neurotransmitter that it may be a good idea not to try to produce more serotonin and to just let the receptors up-regulate in it's absence and then the serotonin will replenish with time.
 
Shouldn't your body naturally get 5-htp from the fold you eat day to day ? (pressuming you have a healthy diet)
 
5htp come naturally from meats. in theory eating a high protein diet will promote more 5htp converted to 5ht in the brain. thats why they say vegans are always pissed off or in a shatty mood because they dont get enough 5htp through there diet.
