South America Advice

Just wondering if any one can give advice on a planned trip to South America, Basically I'm going to Colombia, Peru, Brazil, Venezuela, Cuba, Argentina & Bolivia.

Just wondering if any one has any travel tips? Must see locations/things to do? Also what about the drug scene anything I should be watchful/careful while over there?

I presume coke is th main thing.

I received a TEFL/TESOL in Lima, Peru after college, and spent 10 months bumming/teaching/abusing drugs/meeting new people who I now count as some of my best friends/trying to hit on every beautiful latina that smiled at me in my broken spanish(considering the language issues, I was very happy with my batting "average" with the local women, even though I'm sure a few of them just saw me as a walking wallet and/or a potential ticket out of their situation, nevertheless, South American women are the best in the world, imo, in terms of friendliness/and attractivenes---especially in Colombia...OMFG, is all I can say, and I'm sure you'll say it too, but I met my wife-to-be in Lima, and I can't complain)...wow sorry for the tangent.

Anyway, you're right, coke is the big thing, and was abused openly in some of the bars in Peru/Colombia, although don't try to pull that by yourself, I was always invited to that type of party. Never had much luck scoring opiates(although I know they are available in Colombia if you get a bit lucky with a local tout, same goes for Peru), other than a one week venture to São Paulo, where, of course, a woman---who was probably a prostitute, offered to get me heroin in return for some cash. Not the best, but it made the time I spent in Brazil somewhat of a wasted experience. Anyway, that is more than I want to say in public, shoot me a PM for more detailed info if you want. I spent most of my time in Lima(Peru), and Bogata/Cartagena(Colombia)...it's all about who you meet, trying your best to improve your spanish(if you don't speak any, your only hope may be a prostitute or taxi driver, but I'm sure you have some abilities, so no worries, it's an easy language to learn, especially if you take some lessons/speak to as many people as possible(only way to truly "learn" a language, imo)...

It has been about 6 years since I travelled south of Mexico, and am in SE Asia now, but if you narrow you destination(s) down a bit I can give you a lot of tips.

Coke, cannabis and in Colombia, Panama, part of Guatemala are also innundated with heroin

Hey,

I would agree with the above, definately cocaine and ganja, but if one knows where to look there are psychedelic communities. I have been living in Chile for the past 2 yrz, which is fairly conservative but lots of ganga around. Awful quality though, seedy stemmy and a foul taste. Meds are easy to come buy and amazingly cheap when generic. A 30 pack of alprazolam 0,5 costs <snip>
good luck with your trip

True hahahaha, anyone else got more info?

this is no fucking joke ,am... it stoo late to read everything but I swear a peanut butter and jelly sandwich saved my cousin, WHO IS PERUVIAN AD LIVES IN PERU AND WAS IN PERU from some trouble...

he had no money and was driving to I do not know where.... even he was scared... a half german, half spanish/indian guy over ix feet tall who almost deals with it on a weekly basis.....

stay on main roads, chew on some coca leaves, brush your teeth, ( I do not know your gender but) check out the beaches (ESPECIALLY IN BRAZIL....)

and try to decide to go home at some point because you probalby will not want to...

Peru has the two largest canyons in the entire world.... amazing shit....and Montezuma.....

im too tired to really get into any offf the beaten path sstuff but I a sure you will find a LOT to do (SAFE things) its not really a bad place as anyone who lives or has visited will say

colombia can be sketch in places, seriously, but not nearly as much as it used to be.... i would suggest carrying a VERY limited amount of money so you do not have to fork it all up....

know the languages.... act confidently.... plan your trips and you will have a wonderful time

best wishes on yor travels and have a grand time...

I am going to Antigua in a month,,,,, and I am jealous....

I had to read what peeps said.... you will get much better advice in tme but, yes, south american women can be EXTREMELY beautiful... Brazil, Peru, prbably colombia.... not too sure about the rest, I am no history or geography buff, just have family in Arequipa, Peru and Lim, Peru..... and holy shit are the women there amazingly beautiful....

I do not know where you are from, OP, but if you are not from around there, you will be able to get DOWN with many women.... and i am not tlkng money-grubbing whores and prostitutes like this guy said....

If you PM me and we talk and you seem cool, maybe I will hook you up with my cousin in Arequipa. He is VEY wealthy and sends me pictures of orgies all of the time.....thats not my bag.... and its not a fucking ritual... but... there is also the quinciniera..... not so much accepted in the states, but...... hey....

get at me if you are cool... if you arent....

^^^^^ oneswtwld would be good to have a contact over there, but I can't pm. Maybe you can PM me.

Thanks for the PM oneswtwld, can't reply because I'm a greenlighter. Will try to contact later on.

As far as budget goes I think I went through about 6 grand for 3 months. You can spend heaps less or heaps more depending on what you do. I met an english guy that spent that much in 3 weeks in Brazil.

And you arent stopping in Ecuador?

You will have an awesome time anyway.

In Peru I heard stories of the street dealers tipping off police about which tourists were buying drugs. I never saw it first hand though. There is a certain street in Cusco that was reknowned for blatant open dealing. Be careful if you go there. You will know when you get there because there will be guys flashing you bags of powder and/or buds.

Also natural psychadelics (ayahuasca and sanpedro) are fairly readily available as are benzos.

i figure out where you wanted to go and see if anthony bourdain went there for his tv show "no reservations"...hes always goin to crazy places and trying th best food, and if i went to south america id find out if he went there and try and hit up the same places

In my experience diazepam and alprazolam were available over the counter in Peru and Bolivia. In Ecuador and Brazil I was told no senor.

I tried to ask for tramadol in Bolivia but the pharmacist lady didn't know what I was asking for. It could be the language barrier or they have different names for it over there or both.

Its probably stating the obvious but try not to carry any of these over any borders with you as its probably exposing yourself to legal/police problems unless you have a prescription for them.

I think following Bourdain's travel itinerary would probably make for a pretty amazing vacation. They have lists of restaurants and neighborhoods that he visits in each country if you go to the Travel Channel website, I believe. I forget which episode its in, maybe the Peru one, he drinks ayahuasca, but unfortunately they weren't able to show him being on it. They cut from him drinking the brew to the next day, where he's feeling really raw.

yeah man if i travel out of the country id definetly try and see if bourdain strolled threw that area...

Nice Post. Although old, had some solid info before I go starting a new thread asking for some of the same advice!

As far the Coke & heroin scene goes over there, any of those countries you will find it pretty cheap but not necessarily safe. For that you are better off sticking to where it is the cheapest as well which reflects the local economy & law enforcement & the lack there of. So Bolivia is the best bet as well as Columbia. planning a trip down there when the whether will be good over there. Saving up & am half way there so far.
