Codeine vs Oxycodone - Why would one be allergenic?

In my mind. The choices are many, the consequences
Several questions here actually. But first let me set the scene.

I'm allergic to Codeine. I mean if I take any amount of codeine then someone is sticking me with the Epi-Pen and rushing me to the ER.

On the other hand I can take Oxycodone, a relative of Codeine, and have not one problem. Any ideas as to why? And could I develop an allergy to it in the future just based on the fact I'm already allergic to it's family member, if you will...

Also, I have been wanting to try poppy tea but I've read it includes 12 varieties of drugs, including codeine. Is this true?

If burntserkits logic is correct, then yes. Unless it's like hydrocodone where a small amount of hydrocodone is converted to hydromorphone and rest is hydrocodone.
i.e. if only small amount of codeine converts to morphine in the liver then you could be allergic to either codeine, morphine, or both.

Though i'm no expert on the subject so don't quote me :)

Oxycodone converts to thebaine and codeine to morphine...

Actually the major metabolite from oxycodone is oxymorphone

@Nexius: To be fair, isn't Oxycodone synth'ed from Thebaine? Or atleast a relative of it?
Also, doesn't only a small amount of Oxycodone convert in the liver as Oxymorphone?

Okay, because I can take morphine with no problem, other then itching like hell.

So, is it true what they say about the pods having codeine in them? If so, there goes my hope of having the tea someday.

OP I'm same as you, allergic to codeine but able to take oxycodone, haven't had hydrocodone available to me since I'm in Canada...

Well it's sometimes scripted as a cough suppressant in the form of hycodan or tussinex but good luck getting that. I only know 1 person in all of canada who has had it and i doubt many doctors know it exists.

OP: You might be allergic to morphine as alot of people who have bad reactions to codeine seem not to be able to take morphine either. A friend of mine can't touch either codeine or morphine without getting very sick but has no trouble taking oxycodone or hydromorphone.

Actually It is the fact that you are taking natural opiates.
Natural opiates are notorious for the most severe allergic reactions.
Opium will probably kill you. As it contains all of the natural opiates including morphine and codeine.

Semi-synthetic and fully synthetic opioids are right up you ally. They induce far less histamine release than all of the natural opiates, the only exception is anything that breaks down into a natural opiate. (Heroin... and a couple of others.)

Is Oxycotin a synthetic? B/C I was thinking of asking my dr to change me from Oxycodone (Percocets) to Oxycotin.

i think im in a kind of similar situation. when i was 14 i was just beginning to experiment with various drugs. i had tried vicodin twice before and it was great. a couple months later, i found an old, half-empty/full bottle of codeine syrup. i always wanted to try it and thought nothing of it. i noticed that the syrup was remarkably harder to get down then robitussin IMO. anyway i eventually took all of what was in the bottle (taking about 25 minutes lol). this was the time i would normally be going to sleep anyway. but anyway i think i must have fell asleep cuz i cant remember anything. i woke up pretty suddenly in the morning in order to silence my alarm (it was a school day:( ). but just as i jumped out of bed and was upright i all of the sudden got this feeling of "oh shit im rly fucked up" and i remember that i took that shit the night before. i immediatley sank back down onto my bed and did not want to get back up. i eventually had to even though i was feeling kinda queasy. all of the sudden i started breathing really rapidly and shaking mostly in my limbs it was so scary i had no idea what to expect. i remember i was sitting on something in my room and had my legs propped up on my dresser in order to put my shoes on, but my legs were shaking so bad i had to try several times cuz they were making the dresser shake a little bit. this lasted for about 15 minutes and i went to school, where for the next 2 hours, i involuntarily would nod off(not pleasantly like oxy or anything just really drowsy). needless to say whatever was wrong with my 1st codeine experience i never did it again but have not had similar problems with other opioids/opiates.
