A teenager who died after taking mephedrone was definitely killed by the then-legal party drug, a toxicology report has confirmed.

Jordan Kiltie, 19, died in March after a weekend of partying with friends, and had not taken any other substances, an investigation found. The report comes just two days after mephedrone was ruled out as a factor in the deaths of two other teenagers in Scunthorpe.

The English cases prompted calls for a fresh look at how drug policy is formulated, amid claims the UK Government rushed through legislation despite scientific evidence and advice. Some saw it as a knee-jerk reaction to media coverage.

As the results of the Scottish toxicology test came to light, Jordan Kiltie’s mother, Angie, said her grief had been compounded by rumours he had taken a cocktail of drugs including mephedrone, known locally as moonshine and sold as a plant food online and in sex shops.

She has now had a letter from the procurator-fiscal stating: “The pathologist has decided that the cause of death should be amended to 1(a) mephedrone intoxication.” Previously, the cause of death had been uncertain.

Kiltie, 35, said: “This is proof that it has been mephedrone and nothing else that took my son’s life.

“There was no alcohol in his system and he hadn’t been mixing it with anything else.

“In one sense I am glad that it has been mephedrone, because it has put my mind at rest that he wasn’t taking anything else, as a lot of people were saying.

“But at the same time it is maddening to think that at the time it was legal to buy this over the counter in at least two shops in Ayr.”

She added: “I want it to be made clear that I have not been paid nor have I sought any money for revealing the pathologist’s findings, I have gone public because I just want youngsters to know that mephedrone on its own is a killer, in the hope that no other parents or families have to endure what we have been going through.”

As mephedrone is now a Class B drug, suppliers face a 14-year jail term, while possession alone can mean two to five years’ jail.

Jordan Kiltie’s death prompted a Herald investigation into mephedrone in Ayr. All the local youngsters our reporter spoke to over a three-day period had taken the drug themselves or knew someone else who had.

Other legal highs are still widely available and Kiltie yesterday renewed her calls for the Government to bring in more stringent measures.

“I would like to see the same system as is in place in America introduced here whereby all such substances are banned for a year while they are thoroughly tested to establish whether they can cause harm to people,” she said.

Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock MP Sandra Osborne praised Kiltie’s courage, adding: “I am in total agreement with her view that it is ridiculous that shops continue to sell these substances – whether legal or not – which were not intended for human consumption.

“We now have proof that mephedrone on its own can indeed cause death.”

erm... is this true? I thought this sort of system was in place in New Zealand, not the US.

I am in total agreement with her view that it is ridiculous that shops continue to sell these substances – whether legal or not – which were not intended for human consumption.

Ah, right, so even though they are legal, they're still 'wrong' - just like those MPs expenses, eh?

“We now have proof that mephedrone on its own can indeed cause death.”

ORLY RU SRIALSY N SHIT ?!

How stupid is that statement, ofcourse it can cause death on it's own, even water can cause death on it's on.

Normal world:

"Hey guys, after 3 years of this drug being abused we have found ONE person who died solely to the effects of this chemical. This is quite low and as such, this mephedrone does not seem so dangerous at all."

Bizzaro world:

"Hey guys, after 3 years of this drug being abused we have found ONE person who died solely to the effects of this chemical. This is proof that this mephedrone is an extremely dangerous substance that must be banished from our world so it can be sold on the street where it's more dangerous. Now let's go get hammered and celebrate that we made our country safer ! Maybe Dave will drink so much he'll end up in the ER again, haha good times."

Oh wait ..

God their hypcrisy and stupidity makes me rage. Especially these 2 gems

"Kiltie, 35, said: “This is proof that it has been mephedrone and nothing else that took my son’s life.

“There was no alcohol in his system and he hadn’t been mixing it with anything else.

combined with

“But at the same time it is maddening to think that at the time it was legal to buy this over the counter"

Excuse me while I google some puppies and kittens to make me stop raging.

Sort of. We give it to monkey:

It's legal if monkey says it's legal.

Taken from an article about MDMA

"
DEA announced May 31, 1985 it will not wait for hearings before acting because recent data indicate that the drug is being abused in 28 states.

DEA is using a 1984 change in the Controlled Substances Act which allows emergency scheduling of drugs for one year. DEA's emergency ban will become effective July 1."

Yea now its being abused in 50 states, fuck faces.

So, what are the signs of mephedrone intoxication in a corpse? I doubt it's as simple as saying that he had mephedrone in his system and now he's dead! What concentration would be used to conclude 'death by mephedrone intoxication?' Reference? LD50?

"a weekend partying with friends"
&
"had not taken any other substance"
&
"in march"
&
"in Scotland"

I'm sorry, but after a whole weekend partying on mephedrone, in Scotland, in freezing cold March (-10) probably without eating.

I'm not suprised his heart stopped and that he turned blue...

For 3 years we have people abusing this stuff without one death, then we get one of the coldest winters on record and all of a sudden there are supposedly 17+ linked deaths.

the additional vasoconstriction from cold weather could have done this, especially if going from indoors to the cold outside.

Normal maximal vasoconstriction can decrease cutaneous blood flow to 30 ml/minute. plus a mephedrone binge - what then??

I wonder how much he ingested over what period of time. Probably quite a lot. Maybe not. Either way, ONE confirmed meph death.......

One death due to mephedrone causes a outrage while the countless deaths caused everyday by alcohol goes unnoticed. I don't even have any desire at all to do mephedrone but this pisses me off.

^yeah, meanwhile in the US alone there are about 500 Acetaminophen deaths a year (that we know of)
