Teens inhaling lighter fluid

TEENAGERS are choosing a deadly way to get high - spraying lighter fluid directly into their airways, the Salvation Army says.

Instead of traditional chroming agents such as spray-paint and glue, which are illegal for children under 18 to buy, young people are turning to the more volatile butane.

There are no restrictions on the sale of lighter fluid. It can be bought in canisters at supermarkets for about $4.

Salvation Army commanding officer Brendan Nottle is concerned teenagers are risking setting their airways on fire.

He was amazed when about 20 young people staggered on to the Salvos' bus recently after inhaling butane.

''They were all falling over and became aggressive, starting fights with one another. We knew they were drug affected, but didn't really know what was going on,'' Mr Nottle said. ''We have never seen this before.''

One of the teenagers produced a butane canister when asked what he had been taking.

''They said it was great, they got it for $4 and got a hit straight away,'' Mr Nottle said. ''We don't believe this is a one-off. We have seen several other people who have been affected in the same way. In Britain it is quite common and accounts for 55 per cent of [fatal solvent-related] overdoses.''

Mr Nottle said they were not just inhaling the vapour but spraying the fluid directly into their nostrils. ''Some have even set their mouths on fire when they have inhaled and then lit up a cigarette.''

Banning the sale of the lighter fluid to teenagers would have a limited impact, he said.

The latest National Drug Strategy Household Survey, in 2007, showed 0.4 per cent of Australians aged over 14 had used an inhalant in the past year, a figure consistent with the previous two surveys.

The Alcohol and Other Drugs Council of Australia chief, David Templeman, said research into inhalant abuse was undermined by a lack of data.

He said he was not aware of any increase in butane sniffing in Victoria but said it had the highest rate of inhalant use in Australia.

Aren't authorities noticing by now that banning safer high will just lead to people turning to deadly ones? So stupid the way this world works...kids will always want to get high. They need things that won't fuckin* kill them for christ sake.

lol.. "risk of setting your airways on fire".

I wasn't aware our mouths created sparks... I did light a guys face on fire as he exhaled butane once, quite comical.

This is new? Belfast is filled with people doing this, it's as common as glue, if not more so.

Yea definitely does suck after my mate passed from inhaling butane. Stay away people.

Well, well... we had the thread on butane and other inhalants and NOW look what has happened. Coincidence or massive conspiracy?

These substances are so dangerous though I don't mind the media printing stuff like this if it actually deters people, though I doubt it will and in fact may get some people actually interested in it.

I lost a friend to inhaling butane when I was in high school. She was found the day after she had passed away because she was experimenting alone after hearing butane gets you high. Sadly, I'm fairly sure this article would entice as much as it would repel thrill seekers from trying butane.

Kids and people of all ages are always going to get high, no matter what is and isn't legal.

I know many people who work for the salvation army and not one of them is in favor of current drug laws.

Such stupid drug taking behavior is only going to get worse as the failed drug war continues :(

^^^ Or put something nasty in it so it kills you straight up LOL

I need pure butane for reasons other than inhaling

They'll most likely put the price up/restrict sales. Then kids will be fucked up on datura and other extreme plant based highs

You just can't stop it. Those who want to get high will do so any way they can

We need a N2O program for recovering butane huffers LOL

.

Yeah tell me about it. Now this is in the news, plus the 'MDMA' jelly appearing on 7 news. Seems like we're famous.

BTW - my sympathies to those who have lost people to butane

^^ I agree with you and the first poster ,people that want to get high will and sadly they will go for the easiest thing available to them, there is no way to stop it but it could be managed by legalizing marijuana and regulating it like they do booze.

And lol at the N2o program that'd be awesome!

This is old news, I am 36 n was a harcore butane sniffer at 14 -15 yrs.
I grew out of it, so did all my friends.
No harm done???

^ Maybe you were lucky man, my mate passed away from doing it for about a week.
