mushroom cake looks like it had hairs

So I saw a cake or whatever its called which was started from a grow bag. There was a lot of growth on it, but it looked like it was growing white hairs everywhere. It was very fuzzy looking. Is this normally what happens or could it have been mold or something?

can't know at all without pics. healthy mycelial growth is supposed to be brilliant white and root-like (rhizomorphic) in appearance.

It was probably mycelium, not mold.

You leave the fuzzy white hairs to do their job, give a look in when the cake is fully white all over then your ready to move on to the next stage which I believe is casing layer

it seems ok. give it some more time. as long as the cakes were sterile to start in a sterile environment and covered...
