Hello, I've always been an avid reader of forums such as bluelight and have finally decided to register.
I've always been impressed by the level of knowledge in these communities! I actually am studying to become a pharmacist and was interested in the academic/professional backgrounds of other users.

I have a feeling this may be an old or recurring thread, apologies if it is.

A large portion of us are probably uneducated early school leavers who never got a HSC (like myself). From fairly low socio-economic backgrounds. Some of us are Drs, have degrees in varying topics from organic chem through to pharmacology - others are just garden variety junkies and newbies.

The differing backgrounds of our members are so diverse, it's hard to put it all in one perspective.

I'm finished a uni degree with honours and am now studying my phd. However my topic of interest includes no pharm work. My science is a bit more pure one might say, less assumptions. ^_^

But you'd find harm reduction spreads far and wide, and as long as they practising safe use, I personally don't care where you come from at AusDD, if you're here to help, your more than welcome !

Yeh congratulations sykik! Did you get a scholarship for it (Australian Postgrad Award? Do they still have those?)? ......

Back on topic, from what I've seen Mr Ibis is spot on: "The differing backgrounds of our members are so diverse, it's hard to put it all in one perspective. " Users range from barely computer-literate through to those with numerous tertiary qualifiications; respected & published members of their fields in academia. Just check and compare the lounge and then the advanced drug discusion forums if you don't believe me :)

Definitely a diverse group of people, and everyone has something to offer. I work in the Pharma industry and my job requires me to have access to information that ranges from drug discovery all the way to regulatory submission. I know some people think Pharmas are the devil and I'm not naive about the corruption that occurs (as it does in many industries), but it is fascinating to witness the process and it's a great education and exposure to knowledge to which I wouldn't otherwise have access.

Sykik, congrats on the degree and all the best with your PhD. My background is in computer science but I have studied different aspects of science along the way and I really enjoy it. I really want to continue with my formal education..just trying to get the ADD under control so I can really buckle down and focus...

I'm an undergraduate university student who's been studying Arts for what feels like forever. No science background here, just a keen personal interest in Pharmacology. :-)

There are so many members here from so many different areas and walks of life, you couldn't possibly put it into a perspective or one socio/educational group, that's just madness you are talking right there madman haha.

I personally got kicked out of school twice; once at the end of year 10 but was able to finish that year externally and then again at the end of year 11... After that my mother demanded I got a job so I worked around a bit and found that my niche in life was Marketing so I decided to go study that.

I made a fake senior school certificate so I could get into TAFE and I completed my Diploma in Business (Marketing) with 50% distinctions and the rest credits and satisfactorily while working full-time in marketing. After that I decided to resign from my position and attend UNI full-time to get my Bachelor in Communications majoring Marketing and PR, this did not last long as I wasn't learning anything I hadn't learnt from working in the field already and decided to drop out after a year.

So I guess I am a UNI drop out here, but I don't care, I am now working in the area and field I wanted to if I had finished my Degree and earning the same as a fully qualified person except younger :D

I'm studying arts because I absolutely LOVE History and Politics. International Relations is my primary field of interest / study; I get off on that shit! I'm a bit of a nerd in that respect but I don't care; I love understanding how the world works. :-)

I did an International Relations Course at UNI and I fucking loved that aye, it was just interesting in seeing the different ways each country reacts with each other and what caused it to be this way from events that happened in the past. Along with the way they associate with each other depending on what type of government they have and what resources they have to offer lol.

Yup, plus with a bit extra, but it's not flash, just enough to get by really
You're doing maths or physics or something similar right?

I don't want to go into specifics *paranoid much*, but I study physics with my interests in photons and quantum mechanics.

Send me a pm if you want to know more. Now back on topic. On a side note, please don't tell people who you are on drug forum where the feds watch, common sense really.

But yeah at OP, you can't class BL as a class because BL is a class in itself, now try to draw that venn diagram. I hope that made sense.

My background is in awesomeness and music ;)

My drug research started the day that I first tried mushrooms and some know it all tried telling me that they contained strychnine which builds up in your spinal fluid...

I have been informing users of the truth about drugs and harm reduction methods since well before I turned 18.

My life has changed dramatically since my teens but one thing that I never stopped doing on a near daily basis is drug research.

As I can't see an end to the myths and propaganda surrounding drugs, I also can't see an end to my research.

Prohibition made me do it....

Welcome aboard ekoh :)

^^why an arts degree?

Starting off with a BA is a great idea if you don't know exactly what you want to do at university (and don't mind taking slightly longer than normal to finish a degree). You can spend a semester or two trying out a range of different topics then either major in one that interests you or transfer degrees to something more specific getting credit for the subjects already done. Most degrees will have some flexible units too that can be used in whatever... for example I did an IT degree but got away with various arts subjects like history and french too to mix things up.

Would be worth talking to an academic advisor first though as all unis will have slightly different policies and degree structures.

Haha nothing wrong with that man, so long as you've got a job now right? :)

Sorry buddy, feel free to trim my posts of anything you feel might identify you :)

I just want a job in a profession where i can put the few decades of knowledge and experience i have to good use... Drug guidance counselling or something like that would be really good...

Isn't the idea of an arts degree to prolong the time it takes you to hit the real world? Hence why when I was younger my old man told me he'd kick me out of home if I did one! Instead he kicked my arse into working full time. Last year of my electrical apprenticeship, have a cert 4 for it and work with robots and plc's mostly. Have half of my engineering degree done to, cbf with it at the moment though, night school sucks balls. My dream though, is to one day be able to study quantum physics. Would love to be amongst those amazing minds!

Psilo, you shouldn't lie! I saw you last week standing down in a street somewhere in st kilda :) speaking of which where's that freeby you promised me?

Arts degrees have that reputation but for me it's different. When I complete by BA I plan to do some postgrad work and then hopefully land a job in a university doing original research and teaching undergrad students.

:)

I have two degress. B of Arts, and B of media.

I'm impressed by the levels of knowledge of these boards too. Allot of well informed people. But also allot of people whos situations i feel bad for. I'm against the casualiseing of drug abuse that i see some members push, i also enjoy giveing advice to people who may need stearing in the right direction. We are allot more sane it seems in the aussie sections!
