Cats on Xanax?

OP, dosing animals is wrong, unless the individual has a license to practice veterinary medicine. Think about it- one milligram of alprazolam is the beginning dose for psychiatric maintenance. That dose to a cat is like an average person dosing with 16mg, which without tolerance will make the cat incapable of functioning. Talk with the person who dosed the cat, without being aggressive or condescending. Help her to understand.

Im sure if its prescribed by a vet that it would be fine, Im not sure they normally prescribe xanax though. I know Veteranarians do prescribe Valium for dogs and cats though.
 
^^ It is clear that in this scenario the xanax was NOT prescribed by a vet. Yes, vets do prescribe benzos for severe cases of anxiety in dogs and cats (valium predominantly, but also xanax in rare cases; although xanax is no longer commonly prescribed in Australia, I'm not sure about other countries). But this was not the case in the situation the OP described. The xanax was administered by someone who didn't know what they were doing, and could have easily brought harm to not only the mother cat but also the newborn kittens.

Highly irresponsible.
 
Here in the US, vets may also prescribe anxiety meds, but they issue the prescription for the right type of meds and the dosage amounts in accordance with what is known to be effective AND SAFE for that particular animal. Humans feeding human meds to the pets is very dangerous and extremely irresponsible. I know I'd be very disappointed in any of my friends had they done that, it is just stupid and dangerous. :\
 
I didn't read most of the thread, but I'm sure it has been stated that it is irresponsible to give your pet medication like that without going to a vet. That said, my friend's dog would go absolutely ape shit if there was a thunder storm, and the Vet had prescribed the dog 5 mg Diazepam (Valium) tablets to take if it was thundering out. I found that pretty funny

It is also transferred through breastmilk. It could very well harm the kittens.

I had a dog prescribed them for the same reason. They worked pretty well, the dog still freaked when it thundered but it didn't bother me near as much.
 
On the Louis Theroux documentary about kids in america being drugged up the eye balls from a young age one of the families proceeded to tell him that there dog was on 'anti anxiety tablets'. BLESS

na, but seriously, man. you took your dogs medication? that's, like, so bad. you know, that's just like one of those things that is never ok. the vet prescribed your dog that medication because it needed it.

Never threatened to punch anybody in the throat.. It was part of my advice. Part serious part joke.

I hope bluelight doesn't turn into one of *those* websites where people can't joke about shit because people get too whiney.
 
FACT: animals get the Exact same medication we do for many things. no big deal! the vet would have given him benzos himself. the only factor that might have been irresponsible here is did the cat's owner look up the proper dosage to give said cat?

For sure. That's why I was confused when she dosed the cat, because cats definitely can't handle pharmaceuticals like humans can. To all the others who suggested throat punching, that's harsh. But understandable. I would if I understood back then how bad it was for the cat, and if she wasn't 70 years old hah. But question is, would the Xanax mutate or affect the milk that's produced by the cat? I don't want those kittens to die. They're the cutest things ever.
