benadryl and otc sleep the same?

Ok long story short my and friend and I have been talking about this for some time..

If they are the same active ingrediant then can an otc sleep aide also be used as an antihistimine?

I say it can since its the same active ingrediant but he keeps sayin the inactive ingrediants is also important. What say you blue light? Also any links would be nice so I can prove to him since he won't take my word alone...
 
Yes it is the same chemical, depends on what brand you are using. Either Diphenhydramine, and Doxylamine are used as both anti-histamines and sedatives.
 
In fact Doxylamine is far superior to diphenhydramine (benadryl) in terms of sedation it's OTC in some countries at 50mg, where here it's 6.25 if I'm not mistaken... and rivals it in terms of being a antihistamine
