The New Orleans scene

Been watching Treme on HBO and it has really whetted my appetite for dirty, old school Bayeux piano jazz. The only real influence I've been exposed to growing up was Dr. John, one of my Dad's favourite tripping records, he used to put i it on when me and my girl were tripping on mushrooms as a kid. Just looking now for recommendations of what to download. So if you know the sound, hit that shot for me!
 
one of my fave bands of all time is The Meters (from New Orleans)

they do jazz, but with a gritty bluesy funky feel to it.

download their double disc best of :)
 
Not exacly New Orleans... but John McLauglin and Chick Corea have a good jazz fusion album, five piece band. Has great piano, organ, guiar, horns....

In the show House, Houses character plays beautiful old blues and jazz records during the show. Always wanted to know who they were. He also plays awesome piano


Nothing beats going down burbon street and decatur in the day time, listening to all the jazz musicians...
 
uh go real old fucking school and do Jelly Roll Morton.

and there is stuff like Trombone Shorty & Orleans avenue.

but bands I really loved when I lived down there were:

The Zydepunks & Why Are We Building Such A Big Ship? & A Particularly Vicious Rumor is fucking great, & for just piano-ishy, fucking ladybabymiss is the bomb. she sings for rumor too... her wife "stella lithe" is not bad either, but way too fiona apple-y for my tastes.

And to whoever mentioned Prof. Longhair, I d/l one of his after hearing it mentioned on Treme "Forget everything you know and start with the best".

Is anyone else watching the series, it's awesome :D
 
honestly?

I think all that shit is cliche and lame and gives the wrong impression about NOLA. It all sounds like fucking Randy Newman imo.

Sorry, but its not cliche. New Orleans is the birthplace of Jazz. You just dont like Jazz... youre talking about metal for gods sake!

Jazz is great if you have the patience to learn how to appreciate it. Especially Fusion. NOLA jazz is beautiful.
 
Yeah, I definitely didn't start the thread to talk about metal or hip hop (as another post linked to), sorry if I missed the point when it comes to the wider NO scene but I'm after jazz and blues. If a mod wants to change the title to reflect my misinterpretation then feel free. I know SFA about NO other than jazz and blues, but that's definitely where I intended the thread to go and am definitely NOT interested in the less "traditional" NO scene.

I grew up with Dr. John, so it has a lot of meaning for me, and he is also a brilliant musician and Nightripper is an excellent tripping album.

what is more NOLA cliche than Dr. John and Professor Longhair? Look we write jazzy songs about swamps and Decatur street, weee. When people think of NOLA they'll think of our songs and think we all live under marshy water with half aligator catholic women. Those guys aren'teven really jazz. Jazz = Jelly Roll Morton

just because I like metal doesn't mean I don't understand or appreciate jazz, I'm just so sick of when people find out I'm from new orleans, they always ask = katrina, and isn't [harryconnickjrdrjohnprofessorlonghair] the best nola musician ever?!?!#!!??!!?!?! You must just LOVE jazz. & my name. It's all ridiculous. I just wish people would look deeper into that shit instead of cds of people they sell on Bourbon street.

Whoa chill out there my fellow New Orleanian.....Its only cliche cuz hardly any NOLA music actually really leaves NOLA....And thats the beauty of it....

Its actually taken me getting a lil older to appreciate all the traditional music...I hardly know of any of the musicians out there by name....Everytime I go home, I just stumble in some random bar around Frenchman (The locals Bourbon St....Alot of the bars in Treme are on or around Frenchman) and just get lost in the whole scene...from the music onto the interesting people you randomly run into.....and the whole laidback easy going vibe....


Anyways....back to the OP....

Off the top of my head....Id say check out
