MAPS2010 Conference: Biggest Psychedelic Symposium in 17yrs

MAPS sent out an announcement yesterday saying to bring photo ID to register, so apparently physical tickets aren't necessary.

Damn it! I remember when this was announced. It was the only big event I wanted to go to in 2010 and it was the only thing I was willing to plan out months in advance. I remembered just in time to see that I can't get any tickets. Piss on me. :p

Aww mannnn I wish I could go to this, SO much! I missed a lot of the Horizons conference because my boyfriend didn't really want to go, and I'd love to make it to California for this but I'm on the east coast. I'll just make sure to go to Horizons next year-- all 3 days! :]

I'm really happy about this too and I even am shooting for a "trip guide" type career where I can lead therapy sessions this way. I know it's a long shot, but this is what I really want to do. If I can't work on these clinical trials, I'll try to find something similar that I fit in with. :D I just don't wanna be a plain psychologist that sits in a chair and listens, or anything like that... :/ So I'm going on to grad school to increase my options!! I hope all ends up well in this department.

Speaking of clinical trials, I was e-mailed about participating in one called "Psilocybin and Spiritual practice". Apparently I qualify, but I probably won't be able to do it because it's too far away. -_-;

you should check out the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology. They've got a spiritually oriented clinical Psy. D. program and a master's degree program for spiritual guidance. I plan on applying there myself before too long, though I'm not sure i'll attempt to enroll in either of those programs, but who knows...

Well I officially won't be able to attend. I really hope some of this stuff ends up on google video or youtube or the MAPS page.

Hey, thanks for your consideration! I hope that I can end up going to a school like that. It's just so hard to plan something like moving all the way out there right now, as my plans seem completely different now. I really do want to do this though as a career, and I'm very happy that psychedelic therapy is gaining so much more acceptance. I still can't help but wonder if things will go as planned, though... : p

MAPS was amazing and inspiring. I had expected the conference to rawk, but it was head-and-shoulders above my expectations.

The absolute highlight of the conference for me was Dr. Stanislav's keynote on the efforts to include the perinatal and transpersonal states on the standard model of the psyche. Jaw-droppingly brilliant work.

I've been flirting with wanting to go into psych for a long time, but I think this conference put me over the top on wanting to pursue transpersonal psychology as a career. Luckily I'm already in the SF Bay area so I won't have to relocate if I pursue a program at ITP.

It was excellent to meet hamhurricane; I wish many more Bluelighters had been able to make the conference. It felt really good that the sort of work we put in here, and at Erowid, and with DanceSafe, is finally starting to receive the sort of respect in the 'straight' world that it deserves.

Here's a link to Amanda Fielding of the Beckley Foundation at the conference

If anyone else comes across video or links please post them. I was hoping some of this might turn up in google video or some similar site, but haven't seen any of it yet.

No prob! The logistics of moving to the west coast will be quite difficult for me as well, but i haven't even applied yet, so who knows if i'll even get accepted. However, if i do, i doubt there would be much that could stop me from getting out there. I would literally sell everything i own, save some clothes, books & a guitar or two ;)

We do seem to be on the edge of a sea change in this area, and I hope nothing happens to impede that progess (like Palin 2012)...

Damn... is that what the Mayans were predicting?

:p

I'd love to learn more about transpersonal psychology. While I'm naturally a skeptic, and a lot of the TP psychology movement strikes me new-agey, there do seem to be hints of brilliance. Any reading suggestions?

Paths Beyond Ego-- its a collection of 50 essays by various people (grof, charles tart, huston smith, huxley, ram dass, stephen laberge, dalai lama to name a few) which all center around 'the transpersonal vision'

Its not hard to get through and the essays are all sorted into sections like 'the riddle of consciousness' and 'mind manifesters:implications of psychedelics' :)

the whole thing is a gem, and its not hard to get through at all. They're all ordered so they relate to each other if you want to chug though it, or you can just dabble around. pretty fantastic. =D

ha, that really is a doomsday scenario.... and if so they had more foresight than i give them credit for. I'd probably put more stock in the Mayan 2012 theories if they hadn't mistook the catholics that would destroy their culture for pagan deities. Samsonite!! They were way off...

i hate that a lot of new agey stuff gets lumped in with transpersonal psych. Thats actually why i want to go into that field. It needs more scientifically minded people to enter the field. Just because it recognizes that spiritual or religious beliefs have effects on one's well being and measurable effects does not imply that these beliefs are legitimate or have any basis in reality. *angrily stomps off to commit arson at homeopathy stores & key the cars of astrologers*

Oh, and a good reading suggestion for the intersection of psychedelia and transpersonal is Higher Wisdom: Eminent Elders Explore the Continuing Impact of Psychedelics. Lotta great stuff in there, a little bit of crap too, like any good textbook. But the crap is at least interesting/entertaining.
