Help with tramadol

I have finally decided to quit taking this as I can no longer afford to buy it or want to try to get doctors to write for it. I have gone from taking 12-14 pills 3 or 4 times a day at peak, down to 6 pills yesterday before I ran out and am cold turkey. I can't get any for another month unless I go find another doc and my wife and more importantly, me, are ready to be off of it. I am trying to minimize withdrawal. I had read a German abstract that said DXM was one of the things used for the worst withdrawal symptoms. I have some limited access to Ativan if I need it.

What I need to know is...does anyone have advice for this scenario: I still drink alchohol but only beer. I know enough not to mix too much beer and ativan for obvious reasons. Does DXM and ETOH not go together well even at small doses? (45-90 mg of DXM?)

Is there anything I can do about the withdrawal effects and what do you recommend. I am no expert on this and am asking for any and all opinions and help. I have been through alcohol withdrawal in a clinical setting 2 years ago, but don't drink anything approaching that anymore.

Thanks all.

Well I am sure that you do not need me to tell you that you are in a precarious situation. Ultram is a substance that not only has agonism (only mediocre on one receptor though), it also has marked SSRI properties so that if and when a person comes to the point of cessation, they can run into some serious scenarios.

On disasociatives ...For opioid/opiate W/D I would not recommend them. For starters, there is no proof (I am aware of the paper you mentioned, Freye and Levy; Dusseldorf,2000) that I am aware of. the paper you reference only offers a subjective case study in anecdotal style. That subject used Robitussin so it is pretty worthless as a study.

Secondly, you realy do not know where it will lead you. there unknown mechanisms in both Ultram and with disasociatives. What if you complicate the SSRI facet(s)?

Rather than abrupt cessation, is it not possible to wean you and your wife of it?

If you can get a hold of any SSRI's, you may be able to use them to wean down without having too severe seratonin related discontinuation symptoms. When I was weaning off Zoloft I got mild brain zaps, I've heard they can be a lot worse when going cold turkey and there are a lot of other bad effects (depression, anxiety, tremors etc) that can present when stopping a drug with SSRI effects.

Good luck quitting, I hope you and your wife can get where you want to be.

Shalom.

Tramadol in my opinion should be considered dangerous and nothing to play around with. The withdrawls from this for me were so severe I was hospitalized for anxiety, insomnia, peptic ulcer... I have not taken Tramadol in over 2 months and I am still going through tough times even though my Dr. has me on meds like Lyrica and Neurontin not to mention pills for side effects like vertigo and insomnia. I started taking 200 mg a day for ankle and back pain (motorcycle accident) and became so dependant on them that I worked my way up to 400 mg per day sometimes more for approx. 1 year. Having been off of them now I still have trouble sleeping, anxiety etc. Valium helps a little but as with the insomnia pills they only last for around 3-4 hours then I am wide awake all night with constant thoughts running through my head - unimportant thoughts like tv show theme songs running over and over again in my head? crazy stuff and would not suggest taking this drug. I would like to know if there is another cause for this as I did take plenty of acid when I was younger -20 years ago and never had any side effects like this. Is it just now starting to catch up to me or is it the withdrawl from Tramadol?

right now im having a prettay good time with 15mg of valium and 150 tramadol and im thinking of adding another 5mg of valium and 50mg more of tramadol should i do it or not?

not a big deal many times I would take 300 mg of tram and 40 mg of valium and I have NO benzo tolerance, just note that this combo is the ONLY thing that has ever made me actually NOD out.

OP, if I read your post correctly, it sounds like you were taking between 1800 mg's to 2800 mg's a day. Did I read that correctly? If I did, then I honestly think you need to get help coming off. You will need to taper, if I am correct with the numbers. I don't think you can safely cold turkey from that amount!

^ It's kinda weird I think. Mild opioid buzz, some stimulant properties. Maybe, if your 'dyslexia' isn't too bad, you could look up some user reports either on here or on Erowid.

wow i didnt know tramadol hcl was addictive..... i believe its un scheduled too. ive taken it a few times and in terms of typical opiate effects ive felt absolutely nothing. then again i have a pretty high tolerance "230 mgs methadone a day" so this could be a factor. ive also read that in terms of mu activity its 1000 times less potent than morphine. im thinking alot of it may be placebo.

^ Not placebo, it is metabolized into a stronger drug and has serotonin and norepinephrine activity amongst other possible mechanisms of action.

your tolerance is Definetly a factor. I don't think anyone with that high will feel anything from tramadol. My tolerance is only 25mg of hydrocodone or oxycodone and I feel something from tramadol and it is surely not placebo. If I felt something only the 1st few times, then I would say it was placebo, but I feel something every time I take it.

i have used tramadol many times, in doeses ranging from 200mg-800mg and have always felt really eupohoric and warm (as with most opiates). My only concern about tramadol is the MASSIVE constipation that i got from it.

OP-
Clonidine will be helpful and almost any doctor will prescribe it for you.
Also, you can bs that you have anxiety and mild depression and get zoloft or wellbutrin to wean your self down.
I'm in the opposite position - i"m using tramadol to wean off Zoloft and it is working great, I imagine that it works both ways. Best of luck to you.

On a related note - I know tramadol lowers the siezure threshold and I usually get Oxymorphone 10mg IR 180 a month, but am out cuz I'm on vacation currently, but am still trying to chase the nods. I keep inching past the recommended 400mg dosage, but I am also prescribed Lyrica and Valium, both of which prevent siezures, so if anyone reading this has knowledge do you think it's safe to up my dosage? maybe to like 7-800mg? I don't want to and won't get into the 1 gram range since I'm not dumb.

Advice?

I have done alot of research as well as self experimentation and I have to say that Tramadol hcl is 1 funny drug8 No1 here can give u a safe answer to the question u r asking but personally I think it would be a really bad idea to up ur dosage by 3-400 mgs. I have read reports of people who had a tolerance to tramadol and took 200-300mg a day, decided to add 100mg 1 day, and they ended up having a grand mal. Some of these people were on anti-seizure med's when this happened. You know u r pushing it already with the dosages you r taking, and u would b really pushing it adding more. I don't know about u but I don't think I would be able to enjoy a nice high when I am sitting there the whole time knowing I could go into a possibly fatal seizure in a moment's notice. Honestly u r on anti seize med's so yes they will greatly lower ur chances of seizing, but that doesn't mean u can't seize. You r essentially playing russian roulette. Fuck the trams throw em away and get yourself some kratom or something those things are an accident waiting 2 happen. B safe Bro!!
