Food Thread - I cook, I eat, I .....

^I hope your post was not serious man, if so... then give your slow cooker to someone who will appreciate it! lol - that's the wonderful thing about them, you wack in the ingredients and set it going then head off to work - come home to dinner already being cooked!

It was a half joke lol, but the end product was pretty terrible anyway :p

Plus I have no job at the moment, so I set it going and spend nine hours longingly staring at it :D

hahaha! what i don't like about using it while i am home is the smell of the food makes me starving allllll day. it's much more effective when i am at work and come home to it rather than torturing myself. :)

I love cooking in the pressure cooker. Everything cooks in about 1/10th the time it would take in the oven or on the stove top. And meats come out really juicy and flavorful. My fav is a chicken, halved and seasoned, a couple cut up potatoes, a quartered onion, and some chopped carrots and turnips.

I tried a lobster bisque but with prawns.

Turned out really well except for one small m,istake. I wanted it a bit thicker at the end and I probably added a wee bit to much flour asa it ended with a slight flour taste but otherwise all good.

^ The secret with white sauces is to cook the flour/butter in a dry pan to start with before you start adding the milk. That well and truly cooks the floury taste out of it, and if you want it thicker just don't add more milk when it's just about at that point of thickening. Add the milk slooooowly and if it's too runny, start again! :D

When is the strawberry season, it's bugging me that they are so expensive at the moment!

I want to get a slow cooker too! I only need a few more hundred points on my RSL card and I can get a good sunbeam one. Kinda goes against my vegetarian thing though, I guess you could do vegetable dishes in them.

The secret is cornflour Maz. *hot tip for new players*

Just get some corn flour in a cup, add some water and mix it with your finger and then add it to whatever you want thickened....... a little bit at a time. Make sure you're stirring as you're adding it and be patient in the execution.

If you want it too be thick, don't do it too quick!!!!! ;)

Thanks for the tips guys.

In retrospect maybe it wasnt going to need thickening, and I wont next time to see what happens.

With 15 mins to go with the cooking I just expected it to be thicker and panicked a bit, quickly read some internet stuff about thickening and then mixed about 4 tablespoons of plain flour with some water and then added it to the mix.

I also did some pumpkin soup late last week and that was absolutely brilliant. New recipe for me that turned out fine and i have a freezer full of pumpy soup...woot.

Might try a creamed chicken type soup next. I really like creamy pureed type soups.

I made an awesome chocolate cake tonight with chocolate icing and mint chocolate grated on top. :D

A very late B'day cake for the boy.

we're having a bbq tonight - sausages and salad.

For dessert i'm making apple crumble! Feel like something sweet reasonably healthy!

Ooh, have your ever taken the lid off when it was still switched on? Boom! I remember seeing the circles on the ceiling in the food tech rooms in HS. They were pretty high ceilings, too! Must have been amusing to see that food flying through the air like that.

Simplish Thai food.

i've been making this alot lately. here's my recipe.

larb.
this dish comes from north east thailand and is a meat salad. it has a nice interplay of tart (lime juice) and salty flavours (fish sauce). it also has mint and corriander which adds a very fresh taste to it.

Serves 4+

Ingredients:
500grams chicken or pork.
chilli (use fresh birds eye chilli)
5 french shallots (can use one onion instead).
One buch of corriander
One bunch of mint
sugar
Fish sauce
Lime juice (can use fresh from a lime or concentrate)

get 500grams pork or chicken. And marinade it for about 5 minutes in lime juice.

heat oil in a pan and add as many small chillis as desired.

Heat the meat with the chilli - add a tablespoon of sugar to the mix.

chop up the shallots, mint and corriander and add to a mixing bowl (none of these are cooked).

Once the meat is cooked. add it to the mixing bowl.

Add fish sauce and lime juice to the mixing bowl (you'll have to use trial and error to decide on how much of each you like). be careful with the fish sauce because it is very strong and salty. mix the ingrediants well.

Serve on a bed of lettuce with a side of steam rice.

i'll add a recipe for pad-grapow (chilli and basil) which you can made with chicken, beef or pork. its a little harder and more time consuming though.

Thats a good site COTB! I love my slow cooker... awesome for when you want dinner cooked already when you come home from work :D

Tonight it was good old spag bol.....I always think its better a few days after you make it. Teamed with garlic bread and a glass of red.... yum yum!

I picked up a slow cooker about a year ago and it.... 'revolutionised meal times!'

Lamb shanks are fantastic but I was also doing a few Indian style curries in and they were also rewarding.

Most recently though I acquired an electric Pie Maker which is very simple to use. Once you get your technique down you start going a bit crazy with the fillings. Left over red curry duck from the thai restaurant mixed with some steamed rice makes for a great pie filling.

mmmm pies.

Yes i am a huge pie fan. Havent made any for years but with this little reminder i shall get to it.

Cheers mate............Ohh and yes i agree, the stuff you can use is limited only by your imagination.
