The "legal high" mephedrone will be banned "within weeks", according to Alan Johnson, the Home Secretary. Is this the best way to stop people taking the drug? Which other substances should the Government ban? How else can we tackle drug abuse?

Some interesting and insightful answers.)

Stop them from doing what? They always seemed well behaved to me.

Taking dangerous drugs/plants to alter our reality has been going on for eons, since the start of time and it will never stop. No matter what laws, education or whatever you try, it will never stop. It is best to just accept this fact and move on with our lives. I could really give a fuck what my neighbor puts into his body.

that probably would stop mephedrone use, its only used because its legal and MDMA isnt.

You can never stop people from taking drugs.

If there is a will there is a way.... and people will always want to get high... once you stop something; something else will come... they will never stop or win... its just going to be one long cold war on drugs... while they profit from all the "recoverd" stuff and fines people pay...

I really don't understand what all the fuss is about. What's wrong with taking drugs? Why does the government always turn into a nanny-state and take away things that it deems unsafe for us. We're individual adults, capable of making our own decisions. Why not let us do that for a change?

If prohibition had not become popular in the beginning of the 20th century, I doubt drug trends would have gone anywhere near where they have.

If Cannabis, Morphine, Heroin & Cocaine had remained uncontrolled, as well as drugs developed in the future (Amphetamine, LSD, MDMA, etc) much of the illicit drug market, the 'legal highs' industry, prescription drug diversion, clandestine drug manufacturing, etc and the destructive cultures attached to each would not exist. At least not at the level they exist today.

Obviously drug prohibition is horrible and wrong both in priciple and in practice. But it might work in this case, in the sense that far fewer people will do mephedrone now, because the primary reason people do it is its legality (or so it seems), it doesn't sound like a very good drug to me, but that's just personal preference. It's still wrong to make it illegal of course.

Because meth is probably safer and less physically/psychologically addictive/damaging than mephedrone is from what I've heard of it.

Might as well have people resort to meth and not meph. Support your local meth lab! ;)

All drugs are dangerous.

Saying that, we have a personal choice to take them, and i think nobody shoud interfere if SWIY or SWIM wants to take them.

Whats unfortunate is the clandestine meth manufacturing subculture that has developed as a result of prohibition. That genie isn't going back in the bottle- all of those toxic dumpsites, hundreds of thousands of gallons of toxic chemicals, solvents and byproducts, that shit meth full of azirine and iodo-ephedrine and whatnot.

Similar to the introduction of Intravenous injecting as a result of Heroin/Morphine prohibition, and from there the addition of rush chemicals to make the IV rush better (up to prohibition, most heroin/morphine addicts muscled or skinpopped pure Rx opioids, considering IV injections dirty and 'missed hits').

Will they at least shut the fuck up about mephedrone deaths when they make it illegal? I don't see an article for every poor fuck who dies of a heroin and fentanyl overdose every fucking day. they can go ahead and make it illegal, that way i can just buy it from my dealer rather than worry about what'll happen if i buy it online.

Believe me, my local meth lab has my full support! ;)

I think the toxicity of mephedrone is beside the point. The point is that, as adults and individuals, we should have the right to choose what substances we consume - even if it is harmful! The government has no business telling us what we can and can't do with our own bodies.

I would rather that people stop farting in public. Actually prohibited drugs would become safer if prohibition were ended. But in the end, it's nobody's business what other people consume. Do what you want to do as long as you don't bother someone else.
