Day care staff 'sedated' children

Two former day care workers in the US have been charged with a misdemeanour for slipping an over-the-counter dietary supplement into lollies and giving it to their charges to help them sleep at nap time.

Pamela Hartley, 56, of Cleves, and Donna Scott, 41, of Cincinnati, have been charged with three counts each of child endangering and three counts each of misrepresentation by childcare provider, said Hamilton County prosecutor Joseph Deters.

The women could be sentenced as many as 18 months in jail if convicted.

Parents had told investigators their children often seemed groggy after leaving the day care. The charges are the most serious that can be applied, Deters said.

Hartley was the director and Scott was the lead infant teacher at Covenant Apostolic Church Day Care in the Cincinnati suburb of Springfield Township, the prosecutor said. They were fired from the day care after the allegations surfaced in December.

It wasn't clear whether Hartley and Scott had attorneys. There were no phone listings for the women in Cincinnati or Cleves, and a message seeking comment was left at the church.

A co-worker notified police in December that Hartley and Scott gave the children melatonin in candy.

"I understand how upset the parents of these children must be," Deters said in his statement. "Day care workers are responsible for a very valuable commodity and must be held to a high standard."

Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone that helps control sleeping and waking cycles. Possible side effects of the supplement form include dizziness, abdominal discomfort, headaches, confusion, sleepwalking and nightmares, according to a Mayo Clinic web site.

The site also says that long-term effects are not known and that it may not be safe for anyone younger than age 20.

While that is fucked up, I can't imagine being stuck in a room with a bunch of small children day after day. I might want some peace and quiet too.

But that's also why I don't work in a Day Care center.

Covenant Apostolic Church Day Care

Churches are so shady. They can run day cares and schools with staff who do not have to meet the certifications/standards of non church day cares/schools because they have some sort of religious exemptions. Such a scam, especially when you consider they are also tax free and thus have an unfair competitive advantage against legitimately fun facilities.

I am wondering how they got it in to the lollies (seriously, AP, can't you use the word lollipop? instead of some stupid sounding child slang?) Melatonin pills are not that small if I recall correctly.

What won't churches do to children? Molest and drug them? No thanks.

What I find most suprising is its only classed as a misdemeanour to dose little kids on mass with drugs without parental permission / knowledge !

Never trust your kids with any church run organization.

No shit! Elsewhere people are getting slapped with felonies and thrown away for a lot longer.... for drugs they were only going to use on themselves!

OTOH, melatonin is a very benign substance. No brain cell death can be attributed with its use.

OTOOH, unnaturally changing the hormonal balance of children is massively incompetent. We don't know all the problems that can arise from doing such a thing. Children, by nature, have all the melatonin they could possibly need, unless they suffer from a deficiency, which is rare anyway.

A little intelligence and research would have shown these caretakers that closing the shades and turning off the lights would have the same effect, only it would have been a more appropriate and safer thing to do.

I would fucking skin the bitches alive in a tub of bleach had they done that to my kid. Huge part of why I am a stay at home mom.

How the fuck is that just a misdemeanor? They drugged kids even if it was just a "dietary suppliment".. wow just wow. I would rape maim and kill...

melatonin isn't anything to be afraid of, but twisted thought process on the caretakers part none the less.

I donno, while this practice does seems shady, the legality/immorality of it is not that extreme. Melatonin is what seems to be a benign, OTC substance. I somehow doubt if say...the day care gave the kids caffeinated soda there would be an uproar. I would consider feeding young children addictive stimulants as much more irresponsible and dangerous.

I definitely don't condone the drugging of children, but the fact they were only charged with misdemeanors is reasonable. I would much rather see the facility shut down rather than the employees imprisoned. How can that day care be considered competently managed if the director and lead infant teacher are implicated in this irresponsible practice?

When you take melatonin your body thinks its night time so no wonder these kinds were groggy. They were messing up their sleep cycle, possibly causing problems later on in the day at home.

Excellent point.
For me, I do not allow my kids to use caffeine or sugar, and I make this very clear at school, so if they gave them these drugs anyway I would be livid.

However, most people follow the party (read: pharmaceutical and alcohol and tobacco lobbyist) line as far as drug-related propaganda goes, so caffeine and sugar are not drugs. That is why they would not be upset.

I agree with you, however.
Keep the addictive stimulants away from children (at least, my children).
