Test results came back as unidentified from ecstasydata.org

I'm wondering what else someone could do who sent a sample in that came back as unidentified.

He's sure it is a psychoactive substance - are there any other ways to figure out what it is?

Any ideas are welcome, however expensive/impractical, to find out the molecular structure or chemical composition.

Wow - this is strange. When you think they run a GC / MS test that would at least identify the chemical group. If they were unable to identify it then how could they say that it was psychoactive?

You could send the sample to any lab that does analysis maybe using FT-IR they would be able to identify the molecule or structure. I’m not sure if FT-IR would give you any better results than the GC results from Edata tbh and would be something you would need to ask the lab.

Would be interested in seeing the print out from Edata and what the mysterious compound was reported as.

Yes, this is not uncommon, they have 77 unidentified compounds at the moment.

As far as I understand the output from GC MS must be compared to a known substance output, and if they have not previously tested a known compound they will not be able to give much more info than a vague chemical similarity. In this case, it was identified as a mono-substituted amine - which unfortunately doesn't provide any new information.

Doesn't FT-IR also require a reference sample? I was thinking NMR would surely identify the chemical structure - I am quite sure it is a relatively simple one - though I don't know of a lab that offers this analysis.
