The world's first tweaker!!

Nagai_Nagayoshi.jpg

Nagayoshi Nagai

(Yup, he isolated ephedrine in 1885 and synthetized meth for the first time in 1893)

Victor's justice is true. Haber was the German's gasser, Grignard the French's. Sensei vs. Sensei.

@thread: any pics of contemporaries?

Damn no pics yet of Stephen Szára or Alfredo Ortega who respectively isolated DMT AND SALVINORIN A

WTF

Many of the good ones have been posted already. I'll see if i think of any more.

For the record, sometimes grad students and post-docs don't get the praise they deserved for their work.

(Also, EJ Corey had tons of suicides in his labs, which tells you how stressful it was to work for that guy.)

Anyone got pics of Richard Manske? DMT synth (go canada!)

I'll tip my hat to this guy:

Richard Willstätter, winner of the Nobel in 1915 for his work on chlorophyll.

Willstätter invented paper chromatography independently of Mikhail Tsvet, a technique that proved vital to his efforts in isolating natural products....(and the technique that would eventually lead to modern TLC.)

His doctoral thesis on the structure of cocaine was in Adolf von Baeyer's lab. Baeyer determined the stucture of indole among other things...along with also winning the Nobel in 1905.

Willstätter continued his research into other alkaloids besides cocaine and synthesized several of them.

He hired Arthur Stoll to work in his lab where he undoubtedly learned his techniques. Stoll would then go on to run R&D at Sandoz, where he mentored a guy fresh out of school by the name of Albert Hofmann.

So I like Willstätter.

The flow of experimental expertise....

Adolf von Baeyer (Nobel 1905) -> Richard Willstätter (Nobel 1915) -> Arthur Stoll -> Albert Hofmann

(DON'T KNOW IF THIS COUNTS) YES OF COURSE IT DOES

Nice one. If Im not mistaken he was released just under a year ago. Any idea what he has been up to since his release. It would be very difficult for him to return to his "former life" now that he has been busted, so I would be interested to learn what he has been up to since his release.-DG

Nahh! If there's one thing for sure than that there is no god! Religion(s) is/are simply an invention of people who just did not understand what the Enlightment and science has given to us.

My own contribution:

WOAH!!!
Aside from that being completely off topic, it is an absurd statement to make for a number of reasons.

First off, you spoke of God and religion as though they are the same thing. A belief in God can (and often is) entirely separate from adherence to any religion.

Also you state that "Religion(s) is/are simply an invention of people who just did not understand what the Enlightment and science has given to us".

Both religion and the belief in a "God" FAR predate the age of enlightenment and science. You speak of religion and belief in God as though they arose from a rejection or lack of understanding of the enlightenment and science. Considering the belief in a god and religious traditions have been around as long as man himself has, clearly this cannot be the case.

Lastly, how is it "certain that there is no god"? In fact I can think of no thing that is less certain. I am confused why the concept of "God" is always argued to be in direct opposition with science. Why are these 2 concepts thought to be mutually exclusive (lets not forget how many of our greatest scienctists were believers in God).

Personally, I believe in "something" akin to a God. The main reason I have for this belief is actually due to science's inability to answer and explain some EXTREMELY important questions. My beliefs have nothing at all to do with organized religion or tradition, but rather are based on the premise that our universe does not make any sense without the presence of a creative God.-DG

This thread needs some rogue biochemical engineers.

I wonder if his 2 younger sisters continued pursuing their chemistry degrees, though it wouldn't surprise me if the feds yanked their funding after Huson's arrest.

The misunderstanding of the concept of God comes from uncritical ignorance of dialectics.

The true question is, what is God? Once you understand, you'll see that he's everything around you and inside of you as well.
God is not a being, God is the essence of infinity and the virtue of nature.

Unfortunately 99% of the world don't quite get it yet...

That's a issue of semantics.
Some prefer to call that Nature (thus avoiding the unfortunate deistic or theistic connotations), like myself, and find it just as enthralling, if not infinitely more so, than the idea of a supernatural entity or "sum total" of the Universe, and in the process avoid lending any credence toward worldviews they don't actually support at all. I'm with you, Murphy.
PS. the idea of creative foresight (in a 'external' sense) in universal creation creates many more problems than it solves ie. unneeded infinite regress. I'll refer you to the self-supporting casual loop idea, instead.

Also, lol thread derailing :P .
