Vancouver: 'Drug Central' of North America

You guys are underestimating BC's (and subsequently Vancouver's) involvement in the drug trade. The RCMP do a fantastic job at discouraging violent crimes but it's impossible for them to even put a dent in the drug trade that's very present here. I've read multiple articles on websites / papers that claim Vancouver is a top exporter for both marijuana and ecstasy. I strongly believe this to be true.

Here are a couple articles to give you example:

Inspector Brian Cantera of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in Vancouver believes that John's small grow-op is one of 20,000 to be found in residential houses around the province.

That figure excludes the larger grow-ops in industrial locations, not to mention the huge dope farms that are scattered around British Columbia's vast interior.

If Inspector Cantera's estimates are accurate, then British Columbia is probably home to the largest concentration of organised criminal syndicates in the world.

Location, justice system, banks make Vancouver ideal place for crime: RCMP

By Fiona Anderson, Vancouver SunNovember 21, 2009

What makes Vancouver a great place to live is also what makes it a good place for crime, one of the Lower Mainland's top cops told municipal representatives and others at the Vancouver Board of Trade's Metro forum.

Vancouver is one hour from the United States, "the largest illegal drug-consuming nation in the world," said Peter German, district commander for the Lower Mainland with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. It has one of the largest ports for trade with Asia in the world, a large airport and excellent banks with branches around the world including offshore locations, he told the forum.

B.C. also has a liberal criminal justice system and a fairly liberal approach to illegal drugs. "On top of that we have a lot of diasporas, strong ethnic communities which make this a place we want to live [and] really make the Lower Mainland unique," German said. "But we also have unique organized-crime trends in a lot of communities. And I include the Caucasian community because we happen to be home to five Hells Angels clubs, the largest number in one metropolitan area anywhere in the world," he said.

Those characteristics make Vancouver and the Lower Mainland part of a global, not local, crime scene. "If you go back 30 years this was really a backwater in terms of crime," German said. "Crime was a very local thing. Right now ... it is global."

The reason is drugs, not just marijuana but synthetic drugs such as ecstasy, he said. B.C. produces large quantities of drugs for foreign markets, mainly the U.S., German said. The fact that those drugs are illegal gives rise to an entire community of organized crime groups that compete for territory. "Gangs, drugs [and] organized crime are fixtures here," German said. "Until illegal drugs go away, we're going to have them."

I definitely agree with you about the marijuana and ecstasy distribution, Vancouver is definitely a top player in that aspect. However, when you look at the social problems that from drug-trafficking & addiction, Vancouver doesn't stack up. While it does ship out loads of weed, it's not the 'drug central' that the article claims.

Walk around the slums of West Baltimore MD, Camden NJ, or Memphis TN and tell me Vancouver is really suffering.

These places are the epicenter of urban decay, almost exclusively from drug addiction, drug trafficking, or drug arrests.

There are hundreds of these blocks in Camden. That's not an exaggeration.

The 1/2 population is obsessed with $ crime and greed

I dont think BC is the 'Drug central' of North America, it definitely is a hub of activity specializing in a few markets. Major American cities and the crime, corruption, syndicates, and black markets are MASSIVE. Show me a larger'ish city that doesnt have some pinky toe in the drug trade in Canada or America. Somethings are kept quite untill the get called out and new cities emerge. The big-boys stick thru it all.

Others have the the ups and down, crime for the most part stays underground. What the DEA reports and what is actual I am sure varies at certain time. This country is going to hell in a hand basket things are looking bleek. Homeless, earth degradation, government, socially, violent crimes, disillusioned people its truly sad. IMO it is just the tip of the iceberg for what it coming.

This whole country needs to be turned up side down and fucking slapped. The news is just disgusting and reminds me of high school goody two shoes that have now graduated to the electoral process, and you wonder why shits fuct. There has to be massive changes and with those changes things are going to get worse, much worse. Trusting a bunch of hypocrites to run the govt. we supposedly need to survive. Bullshit things need to get back to life of the 50's except this time we dont need a technical revolution we need a spiritual revaluation, a trun back to the land. A return to the basics and simplicities in life.

We need people to step out of there cosy, rosy, life's and realize shit is really fuck up and be prepared. There is so much to just drugs, etc. the main problem is with the people in this country and there thinking. The wakening has begun and no matter what you think catch me in a decade and let me know how it is working for you.

The privileged with survive a little bit longer but things are going to majorly crumble. It will be an interesting summer, what the fuck could possibly happen. It could be anything, including what I think. Boycott the government and hope for a utopic change. When will people understand we are on a dead end course and DRASTIC changes need to happen.

Peace,
Seedless

i don't get the point you're trying to make. camden suffers a short supply of drugs, vancouver suffers an overabundance. i would think 'drug central' is quite an apt name to give to a place saturated with so much drugs that the native population can only consume a quarter of it at most (as is evidenced by the DEA reports pointing out how much makes it across the border.) canada doesn't have the resources to stop the drugs and precursors making their way in from asia on boat so atop all the weed being produced there, most of the heroin, mdma and RCs(?) offloading on the west coast find their way to the u.s. too. let me know when any u.s. city produces enough drugs to export. all we're getting from the yanks are unregistered handguns :X

Yes, it's common knowledge that weed + MDMA flow south, while cocaine & guns flow north. But to say that Vancouver is supplying the West Coast of the USA with heroin & RCs is silly. All I'm trying to point out is that Vancouver is no much more of a 'drug central' than any other major North American city. Yes, it has it's niche exporting weed + E - which may very well be due to the relaxed & liberal drugs laws of the area. But it's not 'drug central'
