Effects of smoking herb on the heart?

OK we all know that smoking tobacco daily or frequently over a long period of time is bad for the heart.

What about smoking herb? Does it to damage to the heart or is it a major contributor to heart disease like smoking or using tobacco is?

I know that when people smoke tobacco that they smoke it a lot more frequently and daily and smoke more than they would if they smoke herb daily unless you have really schwaggy herb or a very high tolerance.

In both cases you're inhaling burning carbon material which isn't good but at least pot gets you high.

I'm only asking about smoking herb, not vaporizing it or eating it. I know that if you have blood pressure problems or major heart problems how pot can give you a heart attack.

Are the effects of herb on the human heart something that we know very little about since we haven't done enough studies on how smoking herb effects the human body?

I'm not asking if it's safe to smoke herb if you have heart problems as I probably do not have any since my blood pressure is normal and I've seen a doctor and I did tell him I smoked and he did not find any heart problems with me but he did rather ignorantly assume that I smoked pot daily when I really only smoked it once a month or a few times a month.

I'm not going back to that doctor.

If this is in the wrong forum please move it I posted it here since it deals with herb and I didn't think it belonged in healthy living. I hope this post makes sense as I drank a bit before writing it.

ha bro, chill! its straight with the heart lol i smoked every day and im a cross country runner, my whole team smokes and were like #5 in florida hahah
Peace - FH

I remember reading somewhere your risk for having a heart attack are increased 4-6 times the hour after smoking pot. but besides that I don't know although I've wondered this myself.

Wrong! conspiracy bullshit liberal propaganda, the gov. does studies where the subjects are smoking the whole cannabis plant as a whole, and not just the good stuff, so when they measure your heart rate with all that shit in it, ie. stems, leaves, roots, ofcourse it goes up, plus most people can only smoke about 3g at a time, and not as often as cigarettes

^ you are wrong #4, your chance of heart attack definitely goes up after smoking MJ.

Try not to label everything as propaganda bullshit...

Why is it so hard to believe that smoking plant material can exacerbate an existing heart condition? It affects blood flow, oxygen/carbon dioxide/carbon monoxide levels etc. Just because it's marijuana doesn't make it not smoke.

Lol @ FloridaHighs why don't you actually do some research before you post stuff like this. A large study conducted by the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston found approximately a 5-fold increase in the rate of heart attacks in the first hour after consumption of cannabis. A similar study on the heart effects caused by consumption of the primary synthetic cannabanol found in spice products (conducted by a research institute in the Netherlands I believe) also found a substantial increase in heart attacks. This effect is speculated to be a product of the well documented increases in heartrate and blood pressure resulting from cannabanoid consumption.

^^it only increases while youre on it. i think the OP meant like overall a cumulative effect. which i am 90% sure i have read somewhere that marijuana has no negative effects on the cardiovascular system that stick around after youre sober agian

haha i was so high when i said that ^^ but yea smoking anything can increase your risk of heart attack, in fact, anything that can speed up your heart rate can, but is not likely.

here we go,

"Marijuana and delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) increase heart rate, slightly increase supine blood pressure, and on occasion produce marked orthostatic hypotension. Cardiovascular effects in animals are different, with bradycardia and hypotension the most typical response. Cardiac output increases, and peripheral vascular resistance and maximum exercise performance decrease. Tolerance to most of the initial cardiovascular effects appears rapidly. With repeated exposure, supine blood pressure decreases slightly, orthostatic hypotension disappears, blood volume increases, heart rate slows, and circulatory responses to exercise and Valsalva maneuver are diminished, consistent with centrally mediated, reduced sympathetic, and enhanced parasympathetic activity. Receptor-mediated and probably nonneuronal sites of action account for cannabinoid effects. The endocannabinoid system appears important in the modulation of many vascular functions. Marijuana's cardiovascular effects are not associated with serious health problems for most young, healthy users, although occasional myocardial infarction, stroke, and other adverse cardiovascular events are reported."

this thread provided lulz.

yes, cannabis elevates the rate at which your heart pumps as well as raising bodily BP... You do the "math".

i have no clue about long term, but as a daily smoker for about a decade, all ekg's, blood pressure, everything is always normal when i see a doc. I of course am not high during those times. so, 10 years of heavy use hasn't caused any measurable effect on my heart.

however, i think its pretty damn obvious that weed increases heart rate - am i the only one who knows i am super high because i notice that my heart is racing like mad? sometimes it induces a panic attack. but within 30 minutes or so im just stoned and heart is back to normal.

one more thing - if u smoke from blunts or maybe even cigarette paper too, i would bet that the cumulative effects of that stuff itself cant be good for your lungs, maybe the heart too. i personally am more concerned about that then the weed itself.

The illegality of MJ doesn't allow it to be thoroughly studied but, from what we know now, the general consensus is that it does increase heart rate and does not cause any damage to the heart. Something like cocaine, on the other hand, increases heart rate in a way that can damage it pretty bad (irregular heart beats are generally bad).

I'll put it this way though - I've known a few college football players and they all smoke weed. Most of their friends who play smoke weed. They know people in the NFL who have smoked all throughout their careers and still are. These are some of the most in-shape individuals in the world, and nothing is wrong with their hearts.

NFL player Gaines Adams (sp) of the Buccaneers/Bears died recently from a heart attack due to an enlarged heart. Marijuana was found in his system from the autopsy. The authorities released that information with the disclaimer 'his heart failure was in no way related to his drug use.'

It would be especially awesome if your Cross Country teams name was "The Florida Highs" XD

Yeah, while you smoke your heart-rate increases mildly, but it's not a big deal. Weed is such a wonderful substance as far as side-effects are concerned...

LOL, i love how you choose to bold that part while leaving out the rest of the sentence that says "although occasional myocardial infarction, stroke, and other adverse cardiovascular events are reported".

so occasionally, strokes, heart attacks and other adverse cardiovascular events are reported in young healthy marijuana users. i think that makes it pretty obvious it's not good for your heart.

personally, heavy daily use of marijuana caused postural orthostatic hypotension in me, which resolved approximately 3 years after i quit. i also suffered from extremely rapid pulses a lot when high, which sometimes lead to chest pain and my heart being sore the next day.
