IN, Indianapolis - Every Tuesday Night - Juxtapoze @ The Melody Inn

I was simply referring to bass lines that actually have notes and melodies and hit under 60 hz... and not just bass kicks and mid range bass lines.

To me (being the key phrase at play) the requirements for a real bass line are notes/melodies and an under 60 hz rating :)

And like Fleck said... yes, dnb and bass music get play in other clubs and with other promoters... but you can bet it'll be opening or close... certainly not an 11:00 or 12:00 slot.

And that's a general statement, before the rants start. Sometimes dnb/jungle/dubstep/bass gets a more optimal time slot... but for the most part... you can count on an opening slot.

well to address your "real bass" point, you don't listen to enough techno to make generalizations. There are techno producers writing serious bass lines(I live with one) they just aren't the focus of the tune like we're used to. I'm sure there are decent trance producers and djs I'll never know of due to my distaste for the genre overall ;)

directly reflects on DnB's fans. They're a stand around lot. DnB doesn't get people on a dancefloor going crazy in Indy unless Dieselboy is playing it. It sucks, but it's true. The longer people sit at the bar or stand arms crossed staring at the dj instead of dancing, the longer dnb will be open or close or in some back room. Clubs and promoters book djs to get people A) on the floor and B) DANCING. As long as dnb djs play chin(or ego) stroking music you're fucked. I've played plenty of headlining slots at raves or clubs as a dnb dj and it worked. Those weren't in Indy. Indianapolis is a house and techno city, it's why people go off over the neuro funk techno influenced dnb and the housier liquid and will stand like deer in headlights when Burger or Jimmy gets up there and throws drums at em. If you don't like it, move to Chicago, New York, LA, or San Fran where there's still a dnb scene. Truth be told, DNB is getting stale.

I prefer artificial bass. lol

And to the prime time slot point.....

Come out and support! Show me DNB can pack the dancefloor (or what Gizzmo said) and it could happen.

Granted, when George had the 10:00-11:30 slot at Solstice, a lot of you guys were there. I admit, I was a little impressed by the turnout. But rather than play something a little friendlier to the virgin ears that were in the room, he raped them. You guys loved it....but you're still the minority, and a lot of people flooded to the lounge. (Great part of having a 2-room venue)

Bad precedent for my 1st event at Tru.

Now here we are once again....Dave Owen is playing this Friday from 12:00-1:30 at Tru. Albeit the lounge, but still that's the prime time slot IMO.

I try to get you guys involved. Frankly, it's tough in Broad Ripple. It's hard enough to get the noobs/mainstream crowd to come to an electronic event at all. But if they come in and hear some hard banging (whatever adjective appropriately describes the grimy DNB sound likely to be heard on a Tuesday on Illinois Ave), you have about 5 seconds to win them over or you're asking them to leave.

From a promoter standpoint, it's a risk....unless the room is full of people getting into it.

It's a revolving door. And like Jack said, it's supply and demand.

Ok.... for the record... I don't get into the rape style drum 'n bass much... so I actually wasn't overly pleased by George's set at Solstice.

But once again that comes down to personal taste. I like smooth dnb vibes... same with dubstep for the most part... although once in a while I do get down with some filthy dubstep.

Mostly though... I'm on the vibey tip as you would know from listening to any of my mixes or live sets. Which is why I was one of the few local dnb cats to play on the main stage at Therapy before they started to open up their doors to dnb a little more after realizing that dnb DOES move people in this city. Same with dubstep.

In fact... the first week of the month, I would say it's safe to bet that more people were on the floor during Johnny Utah's set than any other set that night.

And about the real bass thing.... you may notice I said 'to me' (as in... in my opinion, this is what a bass line should be)

And big ups to putting Dave on that slot.... and you can bet everybody in that lounge will be shaking their ass while he's playing.

Naptown loves the smooth dnb vibes... get's 'em every time. Dave, Johnny Utah, Manic, Sea Monkey, and myself... smmoooovvnessss

Rebecca has played here like 3-4 times in the last year, right? I think she even did her own events downtown at Blu a few times in the past couple years. She doesn't live here, so when she gets here it's more of a 'treat', amiright? I know we brought her in August and she played at Juxt last month [or the month before?] and upcoming again this month. Seems like she's picking up steam to me

(although to be totally honest, I still haven't seen her because I was playing in the other room or she played past my bedtime).

fair enough. i just am mainly thinking back to around the time since Jux started. i know she was on the all girls show, and then tonight. i just dont recall many other shows in that period that she was on. it was mainly just the first example of what i was trying to say that came to mind; there's probably a better one.

I agree. I wasn't trying to type cast the whole lot, just providing an example of when the style was given semi-prime slot and main stage, that's how it was handled.

I'm with you. I believe she opened at OG's and I wasn't here at Christmas, so I've never seen her either.

all i can say is <3

on the point of hard/soft/neuro/vibey(wtfever that means) - there's a flavor for everyone, and most aren't hip to the more esoteric (at least to Indy) styles of bass-centric music: never going to know till you try to edumacate them.

and anymore, i've gone softer in my old age :p

Can someone involved with setup tonight please get in touch with me?

djshiva AT gmail

Just need to know if I need to bring my Serato box, or if there will be one there? I also have to work beforehand, so it's more a question of do I need to be there for setup or can I just show up?

i cannot say for certain (doc can clarify), but since swagger is playing there should be a serato box on hand and hooked up

i would say to this, however, that Jux allows people who do house, techno, and etc, who don't get frequent bookings on the other nights, a chance to spotlight. for instance, despite her impressive resume, i have barely seen Rebecca Ciaglia booked much in Indy recently other than at Jux. i understand, though, that it's a very delicate balance to please everyone, but on a whole i think so far the night has done exceptionally well at this.

didn't say axe the four/floor, just put a greater emphasis on the beat(z) side of things. you may be reading too much into things. tonight would be a good example of what i was talking about...

**a decent parallel would be if KID had around 50% d&b. i go there on thursdays to hear house-like music. i dig how Slate likes to mix it up, but it's still a house-centric night.

i always get good reactions from a paradox tune thrown into a more standard set, but a paradox bukkake fest would have people a bit too bogged down.

and anymore (with my soft dong style of hard dnb :p) I get pretty good reactions as well. My point was that it isn't so much the style, but you gotta ease those not in the know into it - but you never know what will happen till you try.

Yeah, there will certainly be no axing of the 4x4 styles... we got love for everybody and Juxtapoze is a spot for ALL of the scene to be heard :)

And Lisa... I don't have your number, yes serato will be there. Set up and ready to go... swagger and parallel will be using it before you :)

ok, so, since reading > you lot. I sent Lisa an email and let her know Serato will be there =D
