Despite Obama admin’s promise, DEA continues raids on medical marijuana growers

Britain just upgraded marijuana to a Class B drug, IIRC. And other than maybe Amsterdam and Portugal, I don't know too many countries around the world that have it legalized.

Theres a few in South America.

This is FUCKED!

Isn't there a clause somewhere which states that if a drug has "no medical use", then it is to be considered an illicit substance? Well folks, cannabis has been shown to have medical properties! Several states have even deemed marijuana to be a bona fide medicine.

We need to bust the DEA on this one. How can we do that?

Obviously America is becoming more and more like a police state, but trying to act like Americans are idiots and everyone else in the world isn't is asinine.

And people are products of the media everywhere. Last time I checked, reality TV and sensationalist/biased news wasn't just restricted to the States. There's a new movie/documentary coming out called Videocracy which discusses how the Prime Minister of Italy also runs the major media outlets in that country. And how whenever he wants to keep the populace preoccupied he just launches another quiz/game show where the female contestants take off their clothes....

I totally understand not every american is like this, but u must understand the origins of prohibition. these people this country is souly to BLAME.

Im just stateing facts.. There is a reason why Hollywood is so big. There is a reason why there are countless talk shows airing every minute of the day... Americans love to be told what to do. They dont think for themselves and are fed whatever makes them feel happy about themselves and there stonewalled beliefs.

These people are so influnced by the media that they have no idea that by protecting there 2nd amendmnt right, they are also killing off any hope of the retraction of prohibition. Obama is trying to overhaul an appealing medical systm and is met with knockbacks at EVERY TURN. Hello america, the rest of the developd world is looked after, for FREE! And you wonder why Obama stays silent about prohibition when a shoe-in like health reform costs him half of the racist vote.

"Oh, thats bill is sure to pass, why dont we attach a little side-note to say that caffine is the only drug safe for consuming... yes, now we are sure to get massive donations from that coperation. woo!!"

Sorry but there are so many short sighted people over there and it effects everyone in the world so we must take notice..

You also make a good point about Holland... Yes, pot is tolerated... They did the same thing in the 60s as america, accept instead of the hippies trying to ovrthrow the government (the reason for prohibition, do ur homework) the students went about it in a sensible manner and there government responded with policy to suit.

England, sure they upgraded cannabis - cause of skunk (no CBD = mental instability in a proportion of the population - fact). They did it out of corrupt politics, sure (like my country) but they dont influnce anyone with there laws.

A great doco that outlines this movment is called - "Sex, Drugs, and Democracy".

So many countrys follow america, and still do to this day all because of nixion and his international drugs treaty which is still valid to this day...

There is a political party in Australia called 'The Greens'. its th 3rd biggest party and actually wins a fair amount of seats in elections, but no one still really takes them seriously.. There policy included cannabis for personal use, medicine, harm reduction etc etc.. But the media crucifys them whenever a law comes up for debate...

Unfortunatly our country is controlled by the media also.. w have decriminalistion in a single state, but thats its....

Well, I do believe that marijuana will be legalized in the next 10 years. I also believe that we're better off with Obama than all of the other candidates.

I hope no one is surprised by this. The day our 'elected representatives' stop protecting the interest of multi-billion dollar corporations and actually represent those that put them in office will be the day our voices will be heard and fought for.

Unfortunately and I don't see this happening any time soon.

Now, in the case of marijuana legalization I hate thinking about how people are being harmed by these stupid-shit laws and all the rights that are being trampled on but whenever I see people getting pissed off about cancer patients getting jailed makes me smile because I know eventually enough people will get pissed off to the point where we'll MAKE our puppet representatives listen to us.

In southern california it honestly feels and seems like weed is 100% legal..and has been for like 10 years. Weed is part of every day life here...for everyone. Even republicans!

I mean correct me if im wrong but did Obama raid the house? I thought that said DEA. Im pretty sure this guy will be let out and the DEA will get a talking to, because this isn't the first time the have done this since Obama said that, and ill try and find the link, but I know one day the DEA apologized for the hassle they caused

I believe that the Obama administration is making going after med MJ in states were it is legal bottom of the list of priorities. I see very similar parallels beteween the med cannabis dispensaries and the speakeasies during alcohol prohibition. There was selective enforcement in those days, half hearted enforcement, and enforecement started tapering off as the economy was going into the tank-didn't end until 1933.

Anyway here in San Diego it does seem 100% legal. Were as dispensaries were known but functioned on the down low, 2 months ago I saw one open up in OB in San Diego in an alley that wasn't very discrete. The doorman said they got the go ahead to act in the open. About a month ago in oceanside @ the corner of oceanside blvd and college, a major intersection for people holding cardboard signs there was a dancing guy holding a sign advertising a MJ disspensary that advertized aditional deliverary service to those with Rxs.

At any rate, cannabis is still illegal under fedral law, it is a schedule I drug, and also de facto illegal in all countries that are signitories to international treaties (I believe 100% of countries, or close too.) This includes the Netherlands were it is also illegal under their Opium act.

The big difference is in degree of enforement. So countries such as Mexico, Portugal, Colombia, Holland, Switzerland, among others have turned to decriminalization. I'm no international lawyer but outright legalization would be a violation of fedral law and people in all the above countries still get arrested from time to time on cannabis related charges. The only place that I can think of off the top of my head were cannabis was legalized after a period of prohibition was within the territorial borders of the USA ironically- the Panama Canal Zone but this was years before the marijuana tax act and international cannabis prohibition. Actaually the Republic of Panama repealed their prohibition of cannabis too right afterwards.

Anyway, according to the US constitution congress makes the laws. The presidents job is to administer them through the federal bureaucracy. The best solution would be to start voting in thrid party candidates and get those laws changed federally- atleast this would leave the states free and clear to make there own decisions on the issue. Thats were we Americans and citizens of other democracies come in through utilizing our right to vote, getting involved in issues, and in the US actively supporting those third parties or solid candidates like Ron Paul.

I know alot of people say the medical movement isnt the way to bring about legalisation but i feel that its a great way to brush aside stereotypes and bring the issue into the media..

Ive said alot of blunt truthes in my earlier posts, but i also acknowledge that America is leading the way in the prohibition fight, and the widening medical laws are ALREADY having a positive impact around the world. Its un-deniable and its i give all the credit to the hard working campayners who have stood for the issue.

In Australia, we are just starting experiment with Marinol... I think it was in the order of 5-10 patients in the country have been approved to undergo trials with it... Its said, but its true..

I always thought most of the other countries in the world subscribed to the idea of NOT following America. We do things differently here in America and it's what has made us the most powerful nation on Earth. Hell, who the fuck doesn't use the metric system besides the good ol' US of A?

I don't really want to delve too deep into politics, but IMHO the corporations/banks run everything across the entire globe. Which group of countries first banded together to start the "New World Order/One World Government" ball rolling? Europe did.

So do plenty of Americans like being told what to do? Sure. Just like people from every other country. And last I checked, Americans are the ones that still carry guns and tell people to go fuck off when they try telling us what to do.

Personally, I believe that Obama is just another stooge in a long line of stooges that have been working to consolidate power for the ruling elite. The drug issue is just a small part of the over-arching control these big business types want over the populace. Except it isn't just over the American populace, it's over the entire world.

Hell, when Obama bent over backwards to give the bankers all the bailout money they wanted after THEY caused the problems with their derivative schemes, a shit ton of that money went to banks that aren't even on American soil! Congress asked ol' Ben Bernanke (Fed chairman) where $500 billion bucks went to these international banks and he straight told them no. That he didn't know where it had all gone (lie) and that he wouldn't tell them anyway (corrupt power mongering).

Except, I can't just be mad at Obama. Because all he is is a good-looking, articulate puppet. His predecessor, Dubya, was a stupid looking, inarticulate, half-retarded puppet, too. These guys are owned by big business and the ruling elite. And it ain't just happening in America.

And Obama's health care plan is just another way to put the populace under control. You have no choice in what your health care is, it still leaves out a shit ton of people, and it puts the country even further into debt and allows a socialist system to gain more traction.

I think anybody criticizing America (who does deserve some criticism) needs to look at their own populace first. Other countries are WAY more absorbed with sports (football) than Americans. So much so that they actually kill people at events. Other countries let government control almost every aspect of their lives and they pay a ridiculous amount of taxes for the "privilege."

Check the plank in your own eye before you go commenting on the speck in mine, so to speak.

I agree with alot of what you say. Not trying to be a smart ass just clear up tinny points:

I always thought most of the other countries in the world subscribed to the idea of NOT following America. We do things differently here in America and it's what has made us the most powerful nation on Earth. Hell, who the fuck doesn't use the metric system besides the good ol' US of A?

The United Kindom and some former commenwealth Nations uses the English system like the USA. We do things differently in this country and we have been looked to as a beacon of freedom from our seperation from the United Kingdom. A document written in 1776, the Decleration of Independence said that all men are created equal and endowed by there creator with certain inalieanble rights among those life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Then came the constitution after independence that defined the powers of the federal government and enumerated certain rights through the first 10 amendments, the "Bill of Rights".

In this country we have a free press. When they lie to us its our fault for buying their newspapers and believing their stories. We have the right to vote, most middle americans have libertarian ideas or leanings but don't understand the libertarian party, the similarity with the word "liberal" which is usually used in the pejorative unfortuanately, by myself included. When I think liberal I think of a politician using the political machinery liberally to achieve there political ends. Of the 2 party spectrum, the Republicans, suprisingly, in theory, are the ones that are for less government size and interfernance, subscribing to the romantic idea (and not far fetched) that Americans can solve their own problems through ingenuety and self-reliance, that a government savior run by arrogant left-wing pricks don't have faith in the average American. This is why they (left wing liberals)have to take it upon themselves to save the people from their backwards, unsoffisticated selves. And during the recession they believe in increasing gov services, even if this means forced treatment and exercizing the law enforcement muscle from time to time to protect poor, uniformed, unwordly or unsophisticated American simepltons from evil people that would exploit them like growers from drug co-ops. Got to keep people employed- people filing for unemployment looks bad, fighting the drug war is one of a mariad of ways of keeping bureacratic law-enforcement types busy, employed, and from their perspective, fighting a worthy cause. This is a government that knows whats best for you.

Of the 2, the republicans offer the most likely potential to stay away from drug prohibition. One example- when Bush was in office- it would appear that National security outweighed the threat of opium production, US comanders on the ground would strike deals with opium growers out of necessity. My theory is that Obama is steping up this effort to be more international- less of an unimformed simpleton (like his predecessor has ben portrayed) helping our Nato allies fight opium production- thus pulling out of Iraq- a place not fully stabalized (we should never had gone in there but leaving the job half done does more harm than good, see aphganistan post- soviets-the Taliban rosebecause the country didn't get the support it deserved for helping end the cold war), now we have no natural buffer against Iran!. Problem is they (the mainstream republican party) do tend to be authoritarian in many respects- i think alot is rhetoric.

The point is America has unique characteristics that must be preserved so that "freedom doesn't perish from the face of the earth". Ron Paul is a republican, a model of the Libertarian end of the republican party. One thing that Libertarians and Greens share for instance is that we are idealistically determined to turn America into a place that is a goverment of the people, by the people and for the people, even if the views are polar oposite in many ways.

Back to the Bill of rights. When a government becomes too overeaching, it is every americans duty to see it is replaced. In the next election for congress this is the time. Even voting independent or for the third party of your choice. Free elections have not been suspended so we don't need violent revolution yet. A vote on a thrird party ticket is not a wasted vote. I can't emphasize this enough. One should never have to vote for the lesser of 2 evils b/c there are alternatives.

about revelution: The Second Amendement. The one that makes all the other ones possible.

France helped us win our independece and adopted some of our ideals in their revolution, though they suffered from class warfare that fucked alot of things up. In the American Colonies, the wealthy farmers, intellectuals, and less affluent faught side by side. Our constitution has not been replaced. The Decleration of independence still is valid.

The Swiss in the 1800s used the USA as a model for their current political system, with a relatively weak federal government, strong cantonal rights, staying out of foreign intanglements, free gun ownership (of asault riffles) and a mostly non professional peoples militia defending the country (until age 50.)
or something). They are like early America in a time warp. They didn't decriminalize canabis but pragmatically, they legalized safe injection rooms, a heroin Rx program were you can get like 750 mg or there abouts of heroin per shot, safe crack smoking room, and cocaine medical maintenance on the horizon). Heroin was legal because from a harm reduction standpoint the program has been highly effective. Despite all those guns and easy access to IV drugs, Switzerland does not have a high murder rate or gunshot assault rate. Crime decreased after heroin maintenance therapy, and up to 1/3 of those on the program graduate to other treatment modalities or decrease there total dose. 750 mg of pure heroin is a dynamite dose. I think they didn't legalize weed because it was easier just not enforcing it agressively.

Another truth: Drugs are illegal by international treaty in 100% of the world. Singapore and Dubai might react differently than Switzerland, Portugal, British Colombia, cities in Germany like Franfurt, Cambodia, and Bolivia or Colombia, but at this point drugs are illegal on the whole face of the planet.

America was a big influence and continues to be in the war on drugs but is not the only one, believe me. America has steped up its effort to fight opium in Aphganistan of which it receives only a fraction of its supply but its is being decried by countries such as Russia in the UN for doing nothing about poppy eradication.

As Americans we are used to being blamed for doing too much or not enough. I say we, like Switzerland, withdraw from the international realm to a great degree. Like Haiti, for instance, we are going to provide probaly 80%+ of the aid for a thug country that can't seem to get there shit together- ruled by thugs. Undeniably, in the near future I predict as usually is the case we will be decried in the UN for not doing enough in Haiti by a country that has done nothing, when we are in severe finacial straights at home. Maybe the french should be handling this. They have supply ships and a modest expeditionary capability. They even have the French foreign Legion for the dirty work so Les Francais don't have to die in police actions. There the ones that pulled out of the territory in the historical past and left it in disarray and its people in abject poverty and deperation. It was the bleeding heart generosity of the American people that tried to get the ex french colony stabalized and back on its feet several times over the past century.

I'll repeat what I said earlier, drugs icluding cannabis are illegal over 100% of the planet unless there is an obscure island nation in the South Pacific (or maybe the Vatican) that didn't sign the single uniform controlled subtance act of 1961 and subsequent ones. Maybe its legal in an obscure chunck of antartica (provided international law doesn't apply there).

I like Obama the man but he might have to succumb to international pressure. He wouldn't be the first to flip on an issue. Remember Bush Sr., "Read my lips, no new taxes"8)

I appreciate both the posts. ++

I understand from an idiological point of view that one party may be better suited to ending prohibition, but actions speak louder then words..

* The 1996 UN drugs report is surpressed because of the US and the DEA.
* Mexico being pressured to back away from legalisation by Bush and the DEA.
* Canada surcumming to the same pressure when cannabis was on the cards.
* The DEA occupying countrys and enforcing laws in South America.

Like mentioned above, we see reform in other countrys but nothing will ever eventuate until that drug treaty is abolished. And thats in the hands of the US.. You lead the way in crisis, you lead the way in war.

And trust me, countrys like Australia are nothing more then lapdogs of the US. People arnt influnced by the US, but governments surely are.

The DEA agents involved will receive salary bonuses and maybe a congratulatory letter from the guy in the White House.
