So I'm getting some Absinthe...

I was so psyched when we first got some of this in '04. I expected a different kind of drunkeness... but it's the same ol' same ol'.

The fun of absinthe comes from the reputation, the smell and flavor, and the elaborate preparation rituals. In that regard, it's a fantastic drink...

Well I had a strong absinthe experience last night and I gotta say it IS different than just regular alcohol but nothing too crazy.

I just felt very clear headed and stimulated.

That is exactly the effect it has. I think that a lot of people cant feel it because they are expecting this intense effect. And when they do not get it they drink more. If you drink too much the sedating effects of the high alcohol content over powers the thujone effects.

Ya I actually really liked it over alcohol.... it IS more like cannabis than regular alcohol, but not the same, of course.

How do the two brands compare, assuming you've tasted both? Does the Pacifique have thujone?

The cannabis comparison makes sense to me, although I imagine it's quite subtle (alcohol with a tiny difference reminiscent of cannabis rather than halfway between the two or something), assuming thujone is the (or a) primary active herb. Thujone was assumed to be a cannabinoid for a long time when first isolated as psychoactive even though we now know it's primarily a GABAergic (like alcohol, incidentally, which may make it seem even more subtle and/or contribute to some people trying it and not believing there's anything active that isn't just alcohol).

thank you for your nice post, i greatly desire to stop fighting with you all the damn time :)

I believe the pacifique is better in terms of thujone but it should be noted that the effects are considered to be more from the other compounds in absinthe than thujone

ask on the wormwood forums if you don't believe me, they'll go ape shit :)

Good observation about it's action of effects... it is just a strange drunk, that is about it.

Any specific compounds that you feel are active or is it just minor effects from the wide variety of mild herbs? At any rate, would you agree with what others say that the differences are subtle enough that it can be easily missed, especially at higher doses when the ethanol overpowers the other stuff? Seems like a cool thing to have tried but not worth the cost to import unless you're really into unusual liquors or absinthe itself. Not a psychedelic, at any rate, and some of the crappier brands that label themselves absinthe don't even have the other actives in them (the US is among the countries with no formal definition required to label a drink absinthe beyond meeting the thujone restrictions and possibly a defined range of alcohol content, iirc).

BTW, sorry if this is OT ;), but I've already detailed how fights can cease to happen - stop repeating your dogmatic opinions about things you don't approve of, don't threadjack, and don't spread bad information on subjects you are ignorant about like LSD and RCs. Stick to helpful information about things you _do_ know about, like this thread, and I have no problem interacting with you like I would any other productive BLer.

Yes certainly. It also depends on the Absinthe your drinking... but PLEASE don't buy "King of Spirits", supposedly it has the highest thujone content, and it does, but it SUCKS! It just has macerated wormwood in it and taste like pure bitter shit! Plus, it lacks all the other compounds which may be the main actives anyway!

Did y'all know absinthe sometimes contains calamus?

This could contribute to some of the effects for sure!

you can order it within the USA

PM me for a vendor (can i say that?)

Obsello is a brand I like, it's about $50 per bottle, shipping is free if you spend $100... so it's not too bad.

well the other actives are good... and no def. no psychedelic.

But ya, be sure to look at absinthe reviews and such before buying. Don't buy a crappy brand and DON'T buy one of the hyped up brands!

A good way to tell if an absinthe is good is to look at the color! It should be an olive green, if its any other color than it has likely been colored with dye or food coloring and most absinthes which do this basically suck.

Some of the best absinthes i have tried have been clear or a very slight yellow/green tinge. There is a process for removing the chlorophyll from the herbs with out losing the active oils.

Well some absinthes are known as "blanches" (i think I'm spelling that right) and they are clear like vodka

the colored ones just have an extra step where they steep the herbs in the distillate.

Anytime I`ve ever consumed Absinthe, it has been in the middle of a night of drinking and as soon as I drink it I`m instantly rejuvenated, elucidated and euphoric. I love it. It`s definitely not going to make you see Green Faeries or anything, but it`s definitely different than any others. Kind of similar to Gin, except much stronger.

yes, yes! That is the main effect! It's cooling, relaxing, euphoric and stimulating!
