Plant Odor

In the several gardens I've been to, it is very hard to tell where specific odors are coming from due to the number of pungent plants all around the room. When do the plants start to smell noticeably? More precisely, what stage (seedling, veg, flower), and when (6 wks, 12 wks...etc)?

Also, I hope this thread doesn't violate any rules. I read the rules thread here, I'm just used to posting in OD and DC.

It really depends on the strain, the ladies will definatly smell stronger during the flowering cycle then anytime else, usually about 1/2 through the cycle. I know from exp. The smell of fresh MJ can be very pungent. Look into getting a air filter system they work wonders, a little on the expensive side but well worth it.

Yeah I've heard a lot about air filtration systems. Especially on the Jorge Cervantes Ultimate Grow DVD. Wouldn't a few fans work just as well in a small closet set up? I figure if you keep the closet doors open to let fresh air come in, and have like 2 oscillating fans and a humidifier, 1-6 plants should do fine. Especially if you take into consideration the fact that if you plant 10 seeds, only 2-3 of them will be healthy females. That's what I've been told by a few people at least. Would an Ionic Breeze work?

better to live way out in the woods w/ no neighbors and a locked gate but in lieu of that you can usually add an activated charcoal filter to something like a bathroom exhaust fan. charcoal filters def help reduce odor.

If you're in an apartment or townhome, or condo, and you're not legal, you're going to need a carbon filter or ozonator . Regular house, or , the woods, you're gonna be okay without one as long as it's not 50 plants, although i have heard stories of people being able to smell it outside the house with really potent strains. A small carbon scrubber + fan goes for under $400 usually. You might need a flange and a fan speed controller too.

Go with a CAN filter and a CAN fan of the recommended size. You could probably find a pair for pretty cheap used i would think. What was said earlier applies regarding the time. You'll be fine with some air freshener until maybe the 3rd or 4th week into flowering. Then it gets worse until it's cure time.

Fewer, smaller plants can be handled by an air freshener like ozium or an ona gel block, or an air ionizer machine you can buy at home depot. If you're doing like 5+ adult size, of a smelly strain though, be warned you will need some hefty odor reduction.

I lived in a house in the woods that was full of mold and other such strange smells. We had a good vent fan, lined the attic with plastic and left a bunch of garbage in the closet that held the attic access panel. Kind of barbaric, but it worked out fine. I have had numerous people from my landlord to my grandparents to friends and nobody knew what was going on, you couldn't detect any smell until the harvest time itself. We also cooked a lot of strange food in that kitchen and burned incense throughout the house so it was hard to distinguish any one specific smell at all anyways.

I live in the middle of the woods, neighbors are no problem. The biggest threat is other people which can be prevented by keeping your shit SECRET. Helicopters with FLIR scare me though.

Ive always wondered how well a active carbon filter works. Like if i had 2 plants in a closet grow, completely sealed and an exhaust with the filter on it would it completely kill the smell?

I took one plant inside this year when it got cold to harvest it and within a couple hours my entire house stank to high heaven. Could not have people over without it being painfully obvious what was inside. and this was one plant, so be warned.

Also, you could try hooking up a pipe to pump the exhaust into the attic or outside with some other exhaust that already exists.

Do those actually catch people? Like I'm just curious to see how effective they are.

You'd be surprised

if you look closely you can see the dog take a dump right at the end of the video! You think they can't see heat lamps? :\

That being said... I doubt those would be flying over your house unless you have quite a large operation and your spot is real blown up.

does this seem like a good deal? i think so.. i am just worried that its a POS>

That seems like a pretty cheap one. ive seen some upwards of 300. does that one come with virgin activated charcaol as well, or is it just the unit?

I have never used one myself, but checked some out. Id really like to know if anyone can comment on their effectiveness. Does it kill the smell completely or only some?

woah, I woulda been pissed if I clicked that and got some faces of death shit, thanks for the heads up.

Flowering, thats the stage they really really start to smell...however if you have good genetics they will start to smell skunky quite a bit earlier. Well not neccessarily good genetics, it depends on the strain, some of them smell skunky immediately and all the way through, other equally potent pot does not smell untill flowering.

There are lots and lots of creative ways to deal with the smell. Ventilation is a must in order to grow, might as well use it to direct the smell where you want to?

I have used the carbon scrubbers, not that one in particular, I don't think, but I had two of them, yes they work, no they're not a magic bullet.

Have you tried an ozone generator?
