Is there a way to test your marquis to see if it has expired? Mine is right at a year old.

I thought mine was expired, it is over a year old, but it turns out the drugs I was testing were just bad.

Its best to test something simple like sugar or asprin when you first get your kit and make a note of the reaction time and colour. That way you can do the same test every so often and make sure your kit is still good :)

Thanks guys! I did the sugar test and turned slightly darker than the actual color of the Marquis. I think it's bad. :(

sugar- fast brownish black reaction

severely etarded, I've noticed you posing in here quite frequently and just wanted to say thank you for your help around the place. It's really appreciated :).

Leading on from the original question, how to know if your kit is still good. What may be a good idea is when you guys buy your new kit, test something like sugar and post up a picture of the results in here - that way the next time somebody is asking the same question they have a visual point of reference of what a 'good' reaction is on sugar.

Not a problem at all. I like taking time to help people that take the time to test their pills :) <3

sure, might take a little while though... short on funds atm... hopefully by april i'll have $25 in my budget to spare. My kit still works now, it's just getting there. reactions are pretty slow right now, but at least it changes in about 5 seconds on good pills right now..

but I will surely test some sugar and take a picture, hell i'll even do a video when i get the extra $25 :/

When i used my Marquis reagent on sugar it turned yellow/light brown, even when i first got it, however, the reaction time was slower this time around because of how old its getting. Does this mean my kit is bad?

I'm not totally convinced my kit is bad even after testing the sugar. Try testing an aspirin, it should turn red.

Color of the reagent is your best indication. If it's brown- beer colored or darker it is past it's used by date.

What would the shelf life of a reagent tend to be? I had my marquis for around a year before I ended up using it all up. I think it was starting to go bad towards the end of it.

From personal experience my marquis was very dark brown and did not react to sugar or aspirin right at 1 year. hth

If kept at ~4 *C the reagent should last at least 12 months, and up to 18 months if it's prepared properly (formalin containing a small amount of methanol). Careful though if thinking of preparing your own, as methanol also forms the very toxic dimethyl sulfate with sulfuric acid. i.e. proper ventilation and std safety practices required.
