Using promethazine to potentiate codeine

Hey all, I am currently doing a cold water extraction on 243.2mg of codeine and have acquired some 10mg promethazine tablets.

I am wondering what the best dose is to take of promethazine to potentiate my codeine and also when should I take it? At the same time? Before or after? I am unsure if it inhibits the metabolism of codeine into morphine so maybe I have to wait to take it.

Also, I have used doxylamine succinate before and usually take 50mg of it with codeine. How does promethazine compare to doxylamine as an opiate potentiator?

This is a common clinical practice. Since you're using it recreationally, I'd start with the lowest doses possible then work up. Try 25 mg promethazine and a lower-than-normal dose of codeine.

Is there honestly nobody that can compare it to doxylamine succinate and tell me whether its best to use it before, with or after the codeine?

It is strange to me the endless threads on opiate potentiation but there is very little elaboration on more than the names of substances to use. Very little dosage information and very little information on when to use them.

dude, if your taking 600mg of codeine you should really get a stronger opiate, but i would take the same amount of promethazine as i assume you have opiate tolerance

I thought it was 30mis BEFORE dosing ??

It worked wonders last night, I ate 75mg about 30 mins before dosing, really nice high.

Perhaps tonight I'll try waiting 30 mins AFTER dosing to eat the promethazine.

Yeah I have a reasonably high tolerance. Normally I do take stronger opiates, codeine's all I can get at the moment.

So you reckon I should take just as much prometh as codeine? i.e. 300mg codine THEN 300mg promethazine 30 mins later?

No, 300mg promethazine is way too much. It's an antihistamine. Doesn't work like the way your thinking, by replacing codeine for promethazine.

30mg is all you need really with opiates. Too much antihistamines can have some nasty side effects.

The codeine is what will be getting you 'high', the promethazine just potentiates it through adding to the sedation and not making you as itchy from the histamine release.

Promethazine isn't recreational at all.

I took 75mg last night 30 or so mins prior to taking the codeine (600mg roughly).

Tonight I was gonna try 100mg of prometh but I still don't know what's gonna be better, taking it before or after dosing with codeine.

Last night it definitely complimented the high, increased sedation etc. but I'm curious if taking the prometh 30 mins AFTER is the better way to go.

^Take the promethazine before you take the codeine. I agree with most others, taking high doses of promethazine isn't what you should be doing. It has anti-cholinergic agency, it's better taken to compliment the codeine, rather than abuse it. But you're probably going to do it anyway :\

This was my attempted reply last night that never quite made it Carl mate

lol mate

I took the promethazine about 45 mins ago, before I hsd codeine, after about 3-4 hourtd

I can tell you this, I was so incredibly off tap last night, it took me back to my ecstasy days.
(I was drinking, smoking pot, dropping diazepam tablets, eating codeine and the initial promethazine dose at the start on the night.

My respiratory system was severely depressed while on these drugs last night so word of warning to newbies and ANYONE wanting to try this (cos it's a pretty damn good high)

:)

If wanting to potentiate opioids, it's a rule of thumb to always take the antihistamine prior to the opioid to get the full effects.

While promethazine is a very good potentiator (which is why it's mixed with Codeine syrup), other good ones include hydroxyzine (Atarax/Vistaril) and cyclizine (Marezine). The latter is OTC while the former you need a prescription for (which is very EASY to get).

I wonder if there'd be any downside to dropping 50mg of promethazine AFTER dosing 100mg codeine but prior to the next (100mg) dose of codeine.

NOTE: I'm using codeine to compliment the cannabis tonight, not chasing an opiate high.

The evening plan went something like this,
(I've been dropping 2mg diazepam tabs throughout the day for the record)

+0:00 - 100mg codeine (tablets)
+0:00 - 2mg diazepam
+0:30 - 2mg diazepam
+0:30 - cannabis (smoked) pipe
+1.00 - 2mg diazepam
+1.30 - 30ml shot of whiskey (scotch)

This is where I'm at now, about to shoot this liquor. Should I drop some promethazine as well? Can't hurt right?
If I eat these tablets now, then drop the codeine 30mins later you'd expect things the prometh to potentiate thus making the high more enjoyable :)

Any comments? Thoughts?

I always ended up dosing promethazine about 15 minutes after my CWE kicked in, so roughly 35-40 minutes after dosing. I found it more effective than doxylamine succinate at reducing itching but less effective for nausea. It doesn't add as much sedation but seems to make the codeine high linger for a fair bit longer. Overall I find doxylamine succinate superior for potentiating codeine. I generally dose 50mg of promethazine or doxylamine to potentiate my codeine.

Interesting. I've used doxylamine as intended, for a sleep aid, but never to potentiate codeine.

I know it comes in Mersyndol along with paracetamol (yuck) but I guess I never made the connection.

Doxylamine succinate is now on my todo list to experiment with for opiate potentiators.
