The effects of daily cannabis use on teenage brains is worse than originally thought

I honestly think that quite a few people in this thread are getting quite defensive about this purely because they love weed so much.
There are going to be people who aren't going to be effected in such a way and there are obviously people who have (I myself, bighooter & Drug Mentor).
Not everyone is the same and yes ofcourse we're not rats. But there are similarities in brain chemistry otherwise they wouldn't be using them as test subjects.

I'd imagine levels of THC & CBD in the strains smoked would quite likely be a factor in this.

yet again more retarded studies.

rats aren't humans, and they havent evolved to develop THC receptors which are naturally in the human brain. why? because rats havent been using cannabis for THOUSANDS of years.

Humans haven't developed cannabinoid receptors because they've been smoking weed for a couple thousand years. That's not nearly enough time for such an evolutionary process to occur. Furthermore, cannabinoid receptors are in everyone's brain despite the fact that only certain cultures have a consistent and long history of marijuana use. It's not as if people who are able to get stoned would be selected for anyway.

Well by thousands, he means a couple hundred thousands. Alright, maybe a bit more seeing as it has been reported as far back as the 3rd millennium BC.

Not disputing your statement, just saying that it's obviously been used for longer than you seem to think.

If this study is based in any truth, it's just another reason to legalize and regulate. I smoked pot daily for all my teen years into my early 20's and it's probably had a negative effect on me. Although doing any drug daily for those crucial years would fuck anyone up IMHO. The problem is that it's the easiest drug for teens to get besides maybe scripted amphetamines/painkillers. And prohibition isn't making cannabis any harder to get....and it never will.

^^^I think puckboy is right on.

sorry but i dont think a developing teenage rat can be compared to a developing teenage human. lmfao. how much thc was administered and in what method, pills, shots, smoke? too many variables to be significant imo.

this is why we should at the very least take marijuana out of schedule I. so legitimate long-term and legal studies can take place and we can begin to understand marijuanas long term effects through trials that actually involve humans. not fucking rats.

I have 24 years, I smoked pot for approximately 10 years, almost daily with some short breaks (some periods with heavy smoking and others with one joint at the end of day), obviously in this period I consumed and others.

In this period I finished my high school, university and now I’m on a master degree, I work in advertising industry for about 4 years, I managed to develop myself and promote fast at 24 years I’m leading a department of 4 peoples (they are between 30 and 40 years)

And the only depression these days is that I cannot find good MDMA in my country  

Where is depression, anxiety? Where are the problems?

I want to see a study that reflects how many teenagers have depression and anxiety from weed or other drugs? And how many people are depressed by nature?

I’m sure that problems appear when a person is not capable to motivate himself in one direction, and I know a lot of guys that where sober all their life and are stupid like an animal.

I swear I heard another study on rats where lower doses increase serotonin and higher doses lower it .....

But anyway in my view . I started smoking weed when I was 15 and I'm now 17.

Over the course of 2 years I have seen my grades go down , I have become less motivated as I now see life in a totally new way cos of weed (like life is one big rat race and I dont want to be a part of it ) .. I also found my concerntration in class is now terrible ...

^ I love weed so I'm not blaming this on weed . But it could b true this study :-S and personally I do think weed can be bad for ur mental health for more frequent users . But only for the points I mentioned , nd not the ones in this study necessarily

I'm a bit confused. The 3rd millenium BC was 5,000 years ago, not a couple hundred thousands.

I noticed this also but I solved this problem with a simple solution. Don't smoke every day. I stopped being a daily smoker and moved on to just weekend smoking. My motivation went up along with my energy and clarity of thought. Being high doesn't cause terrible damage to your body, but it must be admitted that WHILE high most people are typically demotivated. Being high all day and every day is fun, but makes the majority of people lazy.

Scientists study with rats because there systems are quite comparable to humans. If it wasnt for rats, you can say goodbye to most of the scientific data we understand today.

If u think smoking all day everyday doesnt effect you, you are in denial or are unable to recall what it felt like when you first started. I think this is the biggest problem with young smokers and you see it with all the lazy pot-heads out there that give the culture the stereotypical bad names.

Im not saying you cant function or you are doomed and im not saying that you would of been different/not showing symptoms without use. Everyone deals with issues differently.

You eat too much chocolate, you get fat. Being fat is reversable and for some this is an easy situation to deal with. Others, they are fat there entire lives.

But then again, i may be a little biasd, as i am against all drug use during puberty. Im sorry, but your brains just arnt in a good place to add extra substances in the mix. It doesnt matter what culture you are from, recrational cannabis use is a right of passage, not earnt when you are born.

For th record. i still smoke weed. and i feel sorry for countless people i talk to who smoked when they were young and no longer do because there mind has stopped giving pleasure when high.

I smoke weed maybe once or twice a month.

I get anxiety sometimes right after I smoke but it fades quickly into a nice long high.

I am a very laid back person in general and never have anxiety or depression when sober. I smoked daily from when I was 17 until I was 22 so about 5 years.

I think weed can cause long lasting problems in people that are naturally more susceptible to these issues and is probably more of a problem for young people but saying if you smoke weed that you WILL develop these issues is demonstrably false.

i'm sure this has been mentioned somewhere in these two pages, but:
thc fucks rats up. causes hippocampal lesions, neurotoxicity, all that. we cannot reproduce these lesions in rhesus monkeys or find them in humans. maybe what happens to thc exposed rats can be used to get some idea of what effect it has on the mammal mind in general, keeping in mind how specifically sensitive and susceptible rats are to thc's negative effects, but a direct comparison of adolescent rats to adolescent humans is nonsense. but also, yea, I think smoking pot excessively can produce anxiety in an individual.

I had a professor tell me that in the past 5 years, they have been doing research on high potency marijuana. Years ago, there weren't as potent strains as there are now and the high THC level (they are just now finding out) does effect the brain negatively.

I was an every day smoker from the time I was 15, until I was 31. Although I think it may have altered things like short term memory loss and possibly anxiety, I don't know for sure if it was the marijuana. I still consider it a pretty harmless drug. The only reason I no longer smoke (it's been about 5 years, except a few times in between) is because I don't know anyone to get it from. lol I am new to this area and don't have any friends here. I used to LOVE using it for my IBS. It was by far, the best thing for my stomach issues.

I think this has already been debunked. Strains as potent as the ones today have existed for some time now. Think of how long humans have been deliberately consuming and cultivating cannabis. It would seem improbable that in the thousands of years of usage and cultivation we are just now in the last 60 years able to grow such plants. The difference is that the genetics of said strains are just now becoming quite prevalent and readily available thanks to cannabis enthusiasts around the world importing and exporting seeds and making information on cannabis-specific horticulture available to the masses. Sure, on average the potency of cannabis available in the States (and most of the western world) has certainly increased. However, this is not due simply to the fact that we are "just now" able to cultivate plants with such genetics.

I am 45 years old ,and I started smoking pot in 6th grade. By 8th grade ,I was a heavy ,heavy daily smoker .Around the same time that I started smoking pot ,I discovered ,that my parents were pot smokers !!!! It really freaked me out, but I figured ,if my Mom and dad smoked it ,that it could not be bad ,so I commenced on a long career of smoking and Growing .We moved to Florida from NY in 77' ,and My dad worked for the airlines at Miami airport.Every day ,after school , I would come home and search my parents room looking for anything to smoke.the first time I stole weed from them ,I found ,a Bag full of bud ,(like 2 oz's) ,and took a small pinch ,hoping not to get busted.I had a small window everyday after school of like 10-15 minutes ,while my mom went to pick my little brother up at school ,so I would check every day. Then after taking pinches here and there , I went in their closet one afternoon ,and I could smell the raw Bud!!! It was really strong , and it did not take me long to find it .It was in a army duffelbag ,and it was a full LB. !!!! So i Pinched like a half oz out and prayed my dad would not bust me . He had to know ,but I think they were afraid to accuse me. Then the next week I went in again ,and there was the same smell ,I went to look for the Lb. ,and I found like over 10 lbs. !!!!!! I flipped ,and took a handfull from each bag and carefully put them away !! I was in 8th grade ,and that was a lot of bud for an 8th grader!!!! That bag lasted me and my friend like 2 months. We were afraid to keep it in our rooms ,so we hid it in an abandoned refrigerator at my friend's apt.complex.someone eventually found it and took it ,but I just got more !!! This went on for like year until my parents confronted me and let me smoke . (It was the weirdest thing in the world the first time I smoked pot with my dad),at which point my dad would give me a bag whenever I needed one( He also finally bought a safe. apparently ,at that time (late 70's -early 80's ) there were tons of drugs coming into Miami airport ,and my dad was a Ramp serviceman !!! I found out later ,that him and all the other guys had a system to screen all bags ,and red flag anything that looked good , then rifle through the bags ,and pool everything together ,and split everything evenly each night !!!!! They would get Pot ,Hash ,Cocaine ,Guns ,cash, jewelry anything you can imagine !!! This was before they had camera's everywhere ,and most people would not try to report their Drugs missing !!! and yes , People tried to Kill My dad several times ,so he always travelled with at least 2 guns on him ,usually 3 !!!!!He gave me my own gun at 16 !!! a little Baretta .25 I loved that little gun!!! all I had to do was knock on his bedroom door ,and he would close it ,and come back a minute later usually with like ,a 1/2 oz . For a while ,like a Year ,we lived off a suitcase full of Hash he had got !!! It must of weighed 50 lbs !!!! I smoked soo much of it ,I grew to hate hash !!! He always gave me free Bud until his airline went out of Buisiness ,I won't say which one , but it was a Major one ! I ended up becoming a professional grower for years ,and made around $100,000 in my career (back then it was a lot of money) ,plus all the bud I smoked, and the tons I always gave away to all my friends !!!!My dad passed away in 1996 ,he was a cool dude. !!!! I finally quit in 2005 ,after more than 30 years!!! I can't say I wish I never smoked ,because it led to soo, soo, many amazing adventures, but I'm sure I have some kind of severe brain damage. I know that after I quit ,and then like months later tried 1 or 2 hits to see if I would like it again,It was Horrible, like the worst feeling ever.It makes me have panic attacks ,so I will Never ever smoke weed again.

^ haha nice story . Wish my folks toked ... But dude . Try not to incriminate your family :P
