Bluelight and the Aussie Internet Filter – Will it affect us?

Sounds like some good news there belarki, let's hope hes a good public speaker.

there is no such a thing as democracy just like there isnt such a thing as reality; merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one. the government controls us (or atleast thinks they do) who are in turn controlled by others and they too are in turn controlled. like a circle

And let's not forget the ultimate control; money. It ALWAYS comes down to money.

edit: Just found this link and it has some good news. It says that Peter black's research interests focused mainly around the issue of the proposed Australian internet filter.

Sounds like the perfect man for the job

Shamelessly plugging him here, but he also has an interesting blog about media and internet issues.

use a proxy. -.-

You say it like it's a simple easy solution that completely reverses the negative side effects of filtering.

In reality, proxies are generally unreliable, slow, have problem's with certain websites and the big issue; not everyone is tech savvy enough to know what a proxy even is, let alone how to use one.

Even if we can use proxies, the internet will still be slower, the filtering will still cost us money, our rights will be broken and business will be heavily discouraged from Australia (just look at Google's recent pullout from China).

Filtering isn't the solution to whatever perceived problems there is with internet and it's use in our society.

On the issue of Child pornography, it seem's to me that filtering the ENTIRE nation's internet is a last ditch effort due to the failed tactic of individually tracking down the people who put the Child pornography on the internet in the first place (something which Police around the globe has proven to be very innefective at).

As usual, this is simply another political stunt which a very small number will benefit (financially and otherwise) from.

It's also worth noting that the filtering trials tested against the use of proxies (with varying degrees of success, some extremely successful but with significant performance hits). Of course the report itself is pretty useless with little in the way of hard figures or references; it's hard to tell whether the one released to the public was "edited" or not...

Since they are not doing packet inspection, i highly doubt they will pick up any proxies.

But hey you can buy a virtual machine for less than $10 a month and setup your own vpn and proxy thats encrypted.

I urge everyone to sign the petition here - http://www.efa.org.au/petition/

And please, fill it out properly. Don't enter john in every field etc.

This petition is for the senate.

If we all need to resort to getting proxy's to use the fucking internet for some freedom of information then Australia has completely lost the plot.

Pros and cons list
Pro: A few pedofucks will have a slightly harder time finding pictures.

Con: A few pedofucks will instead seek out to make there own pictures
Con: Less information slows the economy
Con: Less information about drugs means more harm to Australian citizens
Con: Goverment will reserve the right to add to the blacklist at any point in time
Con: Proxy's slow our already average at best internet

If only we had our own party running in the election, They already have a sex party, Who would vote for "the drug party" But seriously, make sure we all protest and keep our voices up.

Thanks for the links guys, But I do have one more thing to say, I just realised that I watch the news and read the paper nearly everyday and it's extremely rare that I hear anying thing on pedophiles, I know that there has to be some out there, but why are we going to such drastic measures for such a minor problem in Australia?

Oh for the children.. think of the children....

same reason this conroy faggot won't allow us R18+ gaming... perfect show on this is Left 4 Dead 2. I had to buy access to a VPN just to buy it in another country so the shit effort that the edited aussie version put out there didn't effect me.

^^ Actually, blame the S.A Attorney General, Michael Atkinson, for that particular travesty (R18+ games, also check what he's done to R18+ movies, putting them in burqa boxes)

Anyway, say this and laughed, thought I'd share

Voting for the greens at the next election is pretty much the best thing you can do. With there being a lot of discontent amongst left leaning voters theres a good chance that labor voters in inner city safe labor seats will swing to the greens at the next election which will give them a good chance at holding the balance of power and hence being able to block or at the very least amend any filter legislation.

The greens also are very much pro harm minimisation as well.

Parties like the Sex Party or Pirate party are great but realistically they don't have much chance of picking up any seats at the next federal election.

PS, I am not affiliated with the greens I just agree with the majority of their policies.

I did already have full intentions of voting greens this yr ;)

I started voting Green the last few state and federal (can't really remember how many times now) elections... especially when I'd read back then about how they were totally PRO drug testing at raves etc... I'm sure there are some ideas/policies of theirs I wouldn't agree with but overall I am impressed with them :)

Normally i dont vote, but this has tipped me over the edge and i will be voting green in the next election

Labor has very little to lose with this filter because they know the people most outraged by it are at the very most going to vote 1 Greens and 2 ALP and think it means they're 'sending a message', which actually means almost nothing to their re-election chances.

This really amazes me. This is so draconian that it's just mind-boggling that it's even being talked about seriously.

Also, it's all under the guise of curbing child porn? What a crock this is! I can't even think of a more eloquent way to put it!

How dare this even be proposed...
