Bluelight and the Aussie Internet Filter – Will it affect us?

Communications Minister Stephen Conroy had entered discussions with Google to block access to video content that was not technically feasible to filter at the ISP level.

Conroy meets with Google to discuss Youtube content filtering.

The Internet filter is progressing on multiple fronts. I find this article interesting not because of what it says ISP filtering will do, but because of what it can't. However the governemnts move to liase with various organisations regarding self censorship of content is expected and will prospectively increase the scope of filtering, without requiring an increase in the size of the URL block list generated by the ACMA.

Enjoy.

I actually cannot believe that this sort of a measure is being allowed and so many people do not see it as a major problem. This is not a way to deal with child pornography, but merely a way to win votes by allowing the public to feel safer under the guise that measures like this will make all the pedophiles vanish.
those who would sacrifice freedom for safety shall recieve neither

They who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.

Google and Yahoo have joined two Australian organisations calling for a "rethink" of the country's controversial internet filter plans.
The Australian government has announced proposals to introduce a mandatory filter which would block all RC (Refused Classification) content.
The groups argue that the subjects covered by RC material are too wide-ranging for a blanket ban.
They also warn that the filter will not "effectively protect children".
They claim this is because hardcore material, specifically that featuring children, tends to appear on chatrooms and peer-to-peer networks which are more difficult to filter.
The signatories include the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) and the Inspire Foundation, which encourages young people to get online.
ALIA's Executive Director Sue Hutley said that blanket bans on material through filtering have been "shown to trap legitimate information and adversely affect valid internet access and performance".
The statement on the ALIA website adds that a report about government trials of the filter acknowledged the strain of filtering sites with very high traffic.
Dealing with sites such as YouTube could "cause additional load on the filtering infrastructure and subsequent performance bottlenecks," they claim.
Ms Hutley warns that the current filter proposals would create a "false sense of security" for Australian web users.
"We are directing our support for national cybersafety education and increased funding for policing," she said.
The filter, first announced by Stephen Conroy (Australia's Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy) in 2008, has proved controversial.
Groups including Systems Administrators Guild of Australia (SAGE-AU) and Electronic Frontiers Australia have spoken out against it, and the topic has trended highly on Twitter.
On 10 and 11 February an activist group called Anonymous attacked several official Australian government websites in protest, taking them offline for short periods of time.

Good to see this issue getting more coverage from overseas media outlets and its great that google and yahoo and opposing the filter.

Not just child porn, anything that's been given an RC rating, like for instance depictions of female ejaculation which our unelected censorship board has deemed an "abhorrent" act 8)

Interesting read.

I'm shocked at the things they are deeming as worthy of censorship, especially the part about banning any pornography containing an adult woman with an A-cup breast size, as they say it encourages pedophilia?

Encourages pedophilia? What the fuck does that even suggest, by watching lots of porn with small breasted, 18+ year old women you'll somehow become a pedophile? 8) Are they seriously that stupid? Your either a pedophile or you're not, do they honestly think they can just stop these people from having these sick thoughts/desires by removing some types of pornography? (not including child porn obviously, that should be targeted) I suppose they'll be censoring midget porn too ;)

When will these foolish people, obviously driven by religious ideals and also the government as a whole realise they cannot dictate morality.

Good post, I totally agree. An absolute nanny state, thinking they can govern what we do and don't watch contesting adults perform.... female urination, god that explains so much, they just can't please their wives and have to take it out on the rest of us 8)

Yeah i think its time we all marched on these censorship arseholes who are making executive decisions for the so called good of the nation. We are becomming everything we've fought against in the last centuries wars.

Yeah sure, female ejaculation aint pretty - but its not wrong either. And small titted women aren't attractive to anyone, i'd assume that would include pedos. (okay i'm making a large assumption there, if you do like small tits - enjoy them whilst they last).

I'm guessing the terms they use with the A-cupped girls to mean websites that display pictures of young looking girls (be it they are 18 or not) - in a form of blanket ban, because they really can't be sure how old the girls are in a porno unless they are evidentally children - which becomes a very fine line from about 13-14 onward. But even so, to say all that women with small tits must be underage, thats fucking rude and both morally and politcally incorrect.

It is interesting though...

How many of you remember the unrest that occurred in Iran last year over the county's election? During the civil unrest a young woman named Neda was shot by Iranian militia but unknown to them at the time, the event was recorded on aa mobile phone by an (as yet) un-named individual who posted the video to the Internet.

The video and subsequent story gave rise to a symbol for the people of Iran who used Neda as a rallying cry for democratic reform. Meanwhile in Australia the video has been classified as prohibited content, it is illegal for any site in australia to host a copy of the video or to link to a site that hosts a video under a penalty of $11,000 per day the link is available.

Anyone who claims that the filter is not political is fooling themselves, its just handy that Iran can rely on Australia to do its work for them.

Independent press muzzled?

Overall the comments that a cup tits are banned is basically correct. The size of a females breasts leads directly, in alot of cases - especially those where the female is posing nude - to speculation as to the persons age. If a LEGITIMATE company with goverment approved models/actors displays a woman who is proud of her physique and not ashamed to show that, and is over 18, as per the guidelines in which she is employed - that woman should have every damn right to have her picture published - and the public should be awared the right to see her. If women who look like preteen boys is your thing.

So all in all, the classification board is toying with their own personal discretion on the matter of what they do or do not like - because the fucking act that they use to classify material is so vague. If only our drug laws were the same?

All this talk of midget porn, golden showers and small breasted women is making me quite lascivious, so how bout a change of pace...

I was watching This piece on Hungry Beast (a politically incorrect current affairs program, highly recommended :)) a couple of weeks ago. Can't believe it hasn't been posted yet

http://hungrybeast.abc.net.au/stories/internet-filter-survey-results

Although these statistics are all good and well i don't believe it is an entirely accurate depiction of the Australian Public's opinion, more or less a example of how the public is uneducated or apathetic on the said topic.

It may also pay to look at the demographic of those interviewed available towards the bottom of the page and also the users comments

True, I couldn't care less if 'a' cup tits and female ejaculation didn't exist on the internet. It's the fact that someone else (the classification board) think they can decide what is 'right' and 'wrong' for me to view, aslong as it is within the law. It's the principle of the matter, that's what irritates me. It's bad enough we can't buy R-rated video games here.

Thanks for the link to that video. I agree with you, that statistic that 80% of Australians being in favour of the internet filter I believe is due to alot of people not fully understanding or not caring about the topic like you said.

RC is a very broad term, the infamous video of the Iranian protestor who got shot is considered by the Australian government to be RC, also sites like bluelight which give "detailed instructions on drugs" are considered RC.

To some people it may not seem like a huge deal right now but the internet filter will block bluelight (maybe not straight away but give a couple of years and it will). Bluelight has been on the federal police radar for a while now and they'd be more than happy to see it blocked.

I urge people to get the word out to non internet people, theres a flier/poster that was posted on the somebodythinkofthechildren site which you can print out and stick in peoples mailboxes are put up on notice boards, it really is time to get off the net and get the word out there.

If you guys read the wiki page on cleenfeed. The UK and Canada have implemented the system, but there its not so bad - it's designed only to stop kiddy porn and shit like that - not freespeech websites related to other things, and it is not used as a law enforcement tool.

I can't see why we just had to take it all that much further, to the point where Conroy believes that this is all for children, reading that survey - it states that only something like 37% of households have a child using the internet who is under 18 years of age. Hardly a reason to block everyones internet.

Also stated, is the fact they could give households the option to opt into filtering based on this. But no, we all have to be punished by the mistakes of a fucking true minority of kiddy fiddlers. Even still, kiddy fiddlers getting off on what they believe is kiddy porn (which is most likely 18+ actors who look like young girls) is far better than them stealing kids and raping them.

I still don't agree with real kiddy porn as thats fucking depraved, and a total fuck up for human rights.

God i just don't know where to stand anymore without feeling like someone is fucking watching me. fuck you ALP. fuck you stephen conroy - and fuck you KRudd
