EXACTLY how bad does pot smell while growing?

A friend of mine is considering starting a bedroom grow op, and trying to hide it from his parents. He regularly smokes pot in his room, which his parents know about and don't care. Would having a plant or two in his room create a smell far more potent than what occurs from regular (3-4 times a day) smoking? Or would it be about on par? Would it be possible to dull the smell with incense/febreeze? I personally assume that the smell would be a lot more potent from growing than smoking, but I've yet to be around a plant that had made it through the veg state, not to mention I can barely smell bud anymore as it is

a budding plant definetely smells a lot more, and its a stronger more distinct smell too.

it will reek out the whole house if he doesnt have a carbon filter.
but from the sounds of things it will just be one plant we are talking about?
even then its gonna be pretty hard to hide it.
febreeze? that wont do shit. itd be like hiding behind a tree and going "im invisible you cant hurt me" after a nuclear blast just occured.



but at the end of the day, your buddy is planning to grow an illegal drug in his parents house.
if he gets caught, they go to jail.
its spring, find a nice woodland spot, prep it, and harvest come autumn/summer.

you wont have to worry about parents, smell, etc.

We're both 20 years old, been toking for a few years new to growing though.

The concern isn't so much getting caught by police or parents, just stinking up the house. If the parents saw the plant they wouldn't trip, but if it's stinking up the whole house they'd probably trip balls. Basically what we're trying to figure out is if there's a way to contain the smell to one room.

Carbon filters work well though?

Ive had 2 plants about 3 feet each flowering with 6-8 smaller 18 inchers vegging and you couldnt smell it at all with no filters period. Look for strains with low odor when buying seeds, if you buy your seeds that is.

most low odor strains produced weak bud that has the same effect as dirt mids

We're gonna hit up the club for some clones hopefully, plan on doing a 1 or 2 plant scrog set up behind a large bookshelf that is in the corner of the room, so there's about enough room for 4 people to stand comfortably behind it.

Not true...at all i'd be shocked if you considered 17+%thc weak. Maybe you've not grown your own low odor strains

this is off two plants-

and carbon filters do their job but are big and noticeable.
dont skimp on odour neutralisation

you're right i havnt grown my own low odor strains. i didnt realise you could grow good bud with a low odor yield. you wouldnt happen to be from hickory, nc would you?

Yea, nc. I obviously cant source my seed site but it's dutch and they have a variable plethora of phenotypes selected for potency and low odor of many well-known strains.

When I was younger and tried to grow plants in my parents house against their wishes I never successfully harvested any buds. The smell will get more potent towards the flowering period and hiding a tree inside of a house without anyone noticing is a pretty tall order.

It's early on this side of the planet still haha next time I'll search harder, I didn't search for a very long time I just couldn't recall ever seeing any threads specifically about odor while growing, so after a few queries when nothing really came up i figured i was safe.
