High Times published an explanation stating that apparently 420 was a police code for Marijuana smoking in progress. How true that is I don't know.

high times did do a report

but the report stated that it came from a group of San refeal high school in the 70s, kids who would meet daily after school at 420 and go search for an outdoor marijuana patch that was rumored nearby.

the term was loosely thrown around n then it was picked up by the grateful dead crew n many followers and then became big when hightimes picked up the term in the early 90s

this is the most commonly accepted story for how 420 came about i believe
