Cocaine not safe party drug and causes 'alarming' number of deaths-Telegraph, 13/01/10

Cocaine is not a safe party drug but is partly responsible for an 'alarming' proportion of sudden deaths in adults, according to new research.

More than 3 per cent of all sudden deaths are related to use of the notorious party drug, the study shows.
The results mean there is no such thing as "safe" recreational cocaine taking, and indicate that the drug is a growing public health problem, the scientists believe. In most of the deaths where cocaine implicated, people died of problems with their heart and related systems.
Professor Richard Lange, a cardiologist from the University of Texas at San Antonio, who wrote a commentary on the study, said: "The proportion of sudden deaths where cocaine is implicated is alarming.
"Until this study the problem has been underrecognised.
"One of the interesting things about this study is that we observed that it isn't just chronic users to whom the cardiac effects were linked.
"Often it was recreational users, and sometimes even first-time users.
"People think that if they just use it occasionally it is a risk free drug, and we need to dispel that myth - it's just not true.
"There is no safe dose of cocaine, and there is no way to just use it occasionally and make it safe."
The study is the first to investigate the prevalence of cocaine-related sudden deaths in such a detailed and methodical way.
The UK has the highest proportion of adults who confess to having ever use the drug, at 7.7 per cent - ahead of Spain at 7 per cent and Italy at 6.6per cent. The number of sudden adult deaths in the UK has been put at 500 each year.
The study proved that over three per cent of all sudden deaths in south-west Spain are related to the use of cocaine, with the scientists saying their findings can be extrapolated to much of the rest of Europe - including the UK.
Out of 668 sudden deaths during the study period, 21 (3.1% ) were related to cocaine use - and of these, all occurred in men aged between 21 and 45.

No Shit.

Even if one line can't kill you, that doesn't make it safe. "Safe" and "non-lethal" are very different things.

thats not what i was implying, i just want to know how dangerous is cocaine. I use it recreationally on and off and never realized how dangerous it could be. I just want to know can one line of cocaine kill a person? and how so?

The words 'safe' and 'dangerous' are completely subjective and relative descriptions. They have no place in describing actions that carry risk (eg: in driving). IMO of course! ;)

could one line of coke kill someone? and how if so how could it?

People have heart attacks without it, so if someone already has a damaged heart a line could trigger one. But that's just a heart attack waiting for something to set it off.

ooooh.... quite. :p

Seriously though, I very much doubt one line (of sensible length) of decent, unadulterated cocaine could kill someone - unless they have a specific allergic reaction, maybe similar to a nut or bee sting allergy. Another way it might effect you is if you have an unknown heart issue that is aggravated by the stimulant or even anaesthetic effects of the coke.

I suggest doing a search of the site as you may find better answers from more informed users... ;)

21 deaths out of 668 is an "alarming number"? Honestly that is fuck all, I don't think many people are under the illusion that cocaine use is risk free but anything carries risk. I wonder how many of those sudden deaths were caused by fast food and sedentary lifestyles? I would bet more than 21! Doesn't mean that we should ban McDonalds and make exercise compulsory, it also doesn't mean theres anything wrong with enjoying the odd triple cheeseburger.

"sudden adult deaths in the UK has been put at 500 each year."

I'm assuming these are things like heart attacks and strokes which are relatively rare. It's an unfair comparison to say they make up 3% of sudden deaths, it would be better to know the total number of people using cocaine and what % of them the sudden deaths make up.

1 line can kill you if it's not really cocaine. Remember pulp fiction?
Hell, George Carlin was rich, so you know he was doing a lot. He did it for 4 decades straight and lived to be 71. He only died after he stopped using.
But seriously, 1 line can't kill you. Every activity has risks. Driving, smoking, swimming... It's all about minimizing the damage thru harm reduction. I think that is the most imprtant thing to remember.
Be safe, be smart, and think about what you're doing.
Then you have to decide if the reward outweighs the risk.

I would definitely agree that one line wouldn't kill a healthy person, unless they have some freak adverse reaction.

George Carlin did coke for 40 years! WOW!

OT
I'm not quite sure how long exactly, but he's been talking about it since the late 60's and didn't quit until 02. He had like 3 heart attacks, but kept going. And you know since he had a lot of money, he probably never heard the words broke or moderation.
He's my hero in so many ways. Nicest and funniest guy since Lenny Bruce to walk this earth.

i don't know about hero, but he was a very funny guy, a real trend setter, and not scared to think against mainstream. How much cocaine was he doing in one night? was he literally doing it everyday? anyone u know who is famous and did lots of coke?

Also, it's a fairly central tenet of HR that YMMV and that the fact that someone else had no problems doesn't mean that no-one will.

Hi hope you don't mind i just thought i'd have my say.
If this is what coke could cause, then I’d say one line could kill you imo of course:

'Increased body temperature, heart rate, and blood pressure, Headaches, Abdominal pain and nausea, Decreased appetite, resulting in malnutrition, Irritability, restlessness, anxiety, and paranoia Paranoid psychosis (loss of touch with reality and auditory hallucinations), Addiction or dependence (depending on length of use'.

Cocaine is becoming increasingly popular in the UK, some might say the No1 drug at the moment it's very much used on the party scene, normally around 25% pure but has been known to be as low as 20%. IMO it’s what it’s been cut with that can cause the most harm. Plus mixing it with alcohol you get cocaethylene which is proven to be very toxic for the body and will also give a new high, it’s believed that cocaethylene is more dangerous than both cocaine and alcohol, something that a lot of ppl who use it aren't aware of.

The link below gives some info on cocaethylene.

Caffeine, alcohol and tobacco are the most widely used drugs. But even in terms of illegal drugs cannabis is much more widely used.

the cause of most sudden deaths linked to cocaine is cardiac arrhythmia. when the heart's normal rhythm is disrupted, it cannot pump blood effectively and you die. the heart's normal rhythm can be restored by a defibrillator and/or certain medications. an arrhythmia can happen to anyone. you don't have to have a personal or family history of heart problems. so yeah, in the sea of possibilities, one line of coke could potentially cause a fatal arrhythmia.

a "heart attack" or myocardial infarction is caused by a blockage in one or more coronary arteries. blood can't get through and the cardiac muscle dies in the areas affected by blockage. it's possible that cocaine could cause a "heart attack" in someone who has pre-existing coronary artery disease.
