Health Benefits of Tea

I like all teas, but usually drink the standard green and black breakfast stuff.

AFAIK the anit-oxidants in tea provide the main health benefit.

Oh! I was excited to see this-
I have been getting into teas again........
I've also been reading about tea-
I bookmarked This page on the benefits of tea

I drink my tea cold - I;m not sure if that takes away from the full impact of 'good for you' things or not-
I've been drinking ALOT of Black tea........
My only complaint is that it bloats me some- Otherwise I LOVE it.
I like Jasmine, and Hibiscus teas too- yuuummmmy.

I think my favorite tea is Peppermint- (with no green tea mixed in, just mint) which is good for digestion, nausea, stomach cramps. It has B vitamins (in menthol)......

I also really like Raspberry Leaf, which is said to be good for the female reproductive system , toning the uterus.
I have read mixed things on Raspberry Leaf Tea- some say take it while pregnant and while trying to conceive and some things say it can cause miscarriages.

I LOVE Yogi tea's 'Egyptian Licorice' and I put a strong cup of their 'Mexican Sweet Chili' tea in my Chili .......

HERE are some beauty secrets using tea.

I look forward to hearing more tea tips and suggestions......
I like to try new teas- so, I'm liking this thread! :)

Nothing (tea or otherwise) beats green tea as far as health benefits go. I try to drink 5+ cups daily.

I drink decaf black tea during the day in between coffees and I have one about an hour before bed at night to calm me down and let my brain know it's gosleepies time. I drink peppermint tea when I want a change or when my stomach is acting up. I used to drink green tea but I really don't like it so I have stopped. My fave tea is strawberry/cranberry/raspberry but I can't find it at the supermarket anymore :(

I love rooibus chai, which is chai without black tea, but roobius instead.

I love green tea - Japanese sencha. I could not get decent sencha in the US, but here in Japan, I get very high quality, organic green tea.

Lots of health benefits to both green tea and rooibus. Antioxidants, etc.

I actually prefer herbal decoctions (tea without caffeine).

I can do fermented teas but I find them a bit too astringent.

So my favorite is lemongrass tea, for a host of reasons, but generally it makes me feel lighter throughout the day.

This could be because of the relative plethora of research done on green tea. Rooibus, or rosehips, or other herbs also have amazing health benefits, but have not been as thoroughly researched.

And, as mentioned above, that much green tea is a hell of a lot of caffeine. Caffeine has been shown to cause various health problems, including leeching the calcium from bones. So you might be better off limiting yourself to 1-2 cups a day.

green tea only has 1/4 the amount of caffeine of coffee. you're better off drinking 5 cups of green tea over the course of a day than drinking 8 or 10 cups of coffee like some people I know...

White tea has more antioxidants and less caffeine than green tea. So for health benefits white tea > green tea for sure.

As for myself, I work at a tea shop and get all the tea I can drink for free so I drink at least 10+ cups a day of various teas(white, green, oolong, mate, roobios, herbal, etc.)

As for the caffeine, if you're concerned about it you can simply steep your tea for about 30 seconds or so then toss out the brew and re-steep it for the correct amount of time. That first brew will contain most of the caffeine. Or drink caffeine free herbal teas. Needless to say don't drink decaf or bag teas, always go for loose leaf.

I drink loose leaf Oolong tea in the Gongfu style. Typically I buy Taiwan grown Oolong but sometimes tea from the Fujian province of China as well. There is a little hole in the wall store in Seattle that I typically buy it from. Very small group of knowledgeable staff that run the place although some of the health claims they talk about seem to go into more Chinese Medicine and not western.

I usually drink it 2-3 times a day. Always in the morning while I shower actually then with breaks at work. Its a great mild stimulation I get from it; not to strong like Coffee and it taste wonderful of course. I use the loose leafs as a quid sometimes after steeping it and chew it like tobacoo almost. Although you can re-steep the leafs at least 2-3 times as well.

Dilmah, white, no sugar, three cups every morning with multigrain toast, peanutbutter and vegemite with that cholesterol reducing margerine. That shit is THE shit . Health benefits, dunno, free radicals? My sanity?

I can never figure out which way means which way the >< symbols go, which is better? And by "white" do you mean regular black tea leaf?

> Greater than
< Less than
Think of the symbol as a mouth which is always trying to "eat" the biggest number or the best thing. At least, this is how they taught us in grade school :)

White teas are pure, young leaves/buds that go through very minimal processing and no oxidation. This results in a pale, straw colored brew with a very mild flavor that has more antioxidants and less caffeine than any other tea.

Gunpowder green tea and yerba mate are the caffeinated teas that I like the most, but I think I derive the most benefit from stinging nettle leaf tea. I feel wonderful after drinking it, and apparently it has anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties. A good friend of mine uses it to treat her candida, with good results. Plus you can just go out and collect the leaves yourself (gloves are must for this), then dry and store them in a sealed container for long-term use.

Tea made from fresh ginger root is also quite good, especially in the colder months. I like to grate a bunch of it up and let it simmer for a good while before drinking it. It just warms me up and grounds me like nothing else. Adding some peppermint leaves rounds things out nicely as well.

I mostly drink Ginger Peach black tea - I like Revolution brand the best, but I occasionally drink Republic of Tea.

The ginger is good for digestion/nausea and mild pain relief. It's very soothing after heavy drug use.

I went through a period (late March - early May 2009) of drinking eight cups of Rooibos Green Tea every day, and completely cut out coffee and other caffiene/dairy drinks. The first thing I noticed from this was that I became heavily motivated and much more active; before this I used to drink a pot of coffee everyday and two or three milky cups of earl grey, I would run three times a week for about 40 minuites (4 miles) each time.

After the first two weeks of green tea I decided to up my running distances and by the end of may I was running four times a week in this pattern:

Monday: 12 mile run before college
Tuesday: Rest
Wednesday: 12 mile run after college
Thursday: Rest
Friday: 14 mile run in the afternoon
Saturday: Rest
Sunday: 4 mile run in the morning

I managed to repeat this pattern at this level for about three weeks before nearly collapsing, had to cut it down once college work intensified, I was on an Art Foundation at the time and I became noticably (to myself) less lazy and more creative and produced more and better work than I had ever managed previously, I put alot of this down to the amount of tea I was drinking and the effect it had on me; though it probably also corollated with the fact that I was rarely drinking at the time (maybe once a month) and had also begun using LSD and Ketamin every other week.

Wish I was still able to be in that routine; summer killed it when my friends came back from uni and I started drinking heavily again.. bah! I don't think I'll ever be able to manage myself that well again.. I think Im going to try and cut out coffee again; rooibos green tea was definatly the start point for that health spree I had though.
