Raves; what's your opinion?

I used to go to raves,
but that was before a bunch of fucking thirteen (more of less) year olds started going,
nothings more annoying then a bunch of 5ft tall kids;
with pokemon shirts with kandi with pokemon cards and stuffed pokemon animals hanging of it, running around screaming plur like the little school girls they are.

Not to mention the music they play at the raves/parties in Seattle sucks 85% of the time,
If that wasn't bad enough fucking asshunter came to play in seattle.

Raves that are 18+ are usually the shit though.

Looks like the OP wrote that post in an intense bout of hate. I don't see a reason to hate raves. I don't want to offend anyone, but the heyday of raves was in 1991-2001, with everything winding down/getting worse closer to 2000. So the old schoolers are ones that went to raves during that time, and if you went to them after 2000, you didn't catch the 'prime raves'. The oldschool ravers I know don't stay with the scene for the drugs, and neither do I.

There are fights at raves? Wtf? I guess the scene where i live is pretty small and lots of people know each other, so there aren't any fights. We got good festivals with mindblowing lineups, and we're lucky to be the 'techno city' so we got awesome lineups quite often. So yeah, raves here are awesome. And if they're grimey, dirty, and raver gravy is dripping from the ceiling, that's part of the appeal. Rave != club and never should.

im eighteen and im going to a forty hour rave in Toronto with 70 Djs ( my first time) im doing MDMA with this girl and we are getting a Hotel....im sure it will be amazing!

Ahaha yeah, Darkrave is gonna kick ass. I'm not planning on going, I've got other shit I've gotta do, but you're gonna have fun :P

And to all the people saying that raves are about living in some escapist fantasy world, I couldn't disagree more. I think the point of being a raver is to see how awful the world is and be the one that makes the first kind gesture in spite of it . It's not pretending people aren't jerks, it's knowing they're jerks and having the courage to be nice :)

Depends what you call a rave. Anything you pay to go to, has security etc is not it. Here in England we go to 'free parties'. These are now like the raves from late 80's early 90's, but we had free festivals here for years before that. Outdoors all summer, warehouses in winter. It just became much harder to have big multiriggers after the criminal justice bill. For me it's the only place I can go and really go for it. Dance all night with like-minded people and get properly high. You never know where it's going to be so it's a really nice vibe when you get there and everyone is buzzing. Sure, there's an element of danger, but that just adds to the excitement. Oh and by the way I've been at it for twenty years now, am married and hold down a steady job, so it can't be that bad. It's all about the music, chemicals and dance, dance, dance...

Damn, I wish they had free parties here - raves are so expensive! undergrounds are always at least $5, usually 10 or 15 :/

^ sounds like you went to Monster Massive, eh?

Raves like Monter Massive and TAO are now all about the drugs, and its evident as people still go to them even though the line up is complete twaddle.

Yeah, unfortunately, those are the "raves" that are easily accessible to me now. Back in the late 90s, I had friends and acquaintances who were ravers so I got the info about the real underground raves from them. Then, we'd go to a rave and find out about other raves in the future, and so on and so forth...

Now that my life priorities have changed and I don't have the raver friends anymore, the closest thing is parties like TAO or Monster Massive which I don't really consider "raves" but more like a rave-club-concert mix with its own distinct vibe quite different than a true underground "rave" I loved going to.

The music, though, makes up for some of the these deficits of the mainstream "raves" now as they have big name DJs that belt out some sick ass sets. Anyone know a good site/mailing lists for underground SoCal raves? All rave sites nowadays are more or less clubs..

PS: does anyone from SoCal remember the Moontribe desert raves with headlining DJs like John Kelly? Those were the real parties. Real tribal and real fun.

I like raves because it puts you in a world where everyone seems happy, accepting and friendly. It's just so nice to feel that a whole room of strangers has your back, even if it's just for one night and your just on E.
I love raves, but I'm still young. Perhaps my mind will change in the future, but right now I can't see many things which are much more fun. Might sound weird to you, but I'm perfectly happy with that for now.
Maybe it's something you 'grow out of'?

Moontribe!!!!!!!! :D
A family friend of mine use to go to the moontribe events and still talks about them to this day.

The closest thing to them now are the Psytribe parties which are loads of fun

As for where to find good underground raves its now all about which artist groups you follow

Pure Filth has some great ones
Smog has great parties
Psytribe has great parties

Small time EDM record stores are the place to go if you want to look up underground parties.

^^This.

Although, I do like spinach.

People have to take responsibility for their actions. While I was raving I got almost straight A's and completed my bachelors degree.

Now I have a 'real' job and still rave from time to time. But then again I'm also a big dancer, and that's why I like to go.

The scene is what you make it. If you've made it into a cesspool for yourself you can't really blame others.

nice job!! i applaud you for that =) I want to stay a sober raver cause E fucked me up pretty badly once and ive been kind of scared since... but i wanted to ask you, did you ever do lots of E at a rave once? have you ever done E or how much did you do it? and if so, did it change you in any way, either positively or negatively in the long run..?

how can i recuperate if ive incurred damage from one-time E use? (im not sure if i have but i THINK i still feel some of the side effects)

Yeah, I went to a psytribe party, it was great. There are other parties like that happening, just very hard to find. Al_S_Dee if you happen to be south of LA, I could help you out, just cant PM yet.

u r hurt and seeking to lay the blame for your short falls somewhere and u choose raves, jog on son, i was raving in the early 90's in the uk, n still go out n get mashed now and again, raves aint a way to let emotionally retatred folk think all is well, rave is a coming togeather of folk who like the kind of music on offer and the friendly vibes or like the nasty rude boy vibes, one takes what they want from raves and puts in what they want. the original ethos of raves is to just dance n express yourself, no one cared what clothes u had what work u done, just have fun and meet new people, you aint jaded your'e looking to lay blame cos u fucked up, get over it and chanel ur anger into something positive.
dear me ...come on

That would be ultra-cool! Rack up those posts so you can PM! :D

i was into the nyc rave scene from the mid-90s to about 2000. they were a lot of fun and i get a bit nostalgic when i think back to that time. anyone remember the parties from that time...the monkey parties, Fantasia, Whistle, Boo, Bang, MiXX, weekly Koncrete Jungle, etc, etc.

then i started getting tired of greedy promoters overselling events, the stupid candy ravers, and all the wannabee thugs so i started going to the Ultraworld parties in DC (Engage, Starscape). Man, ultraworld threw some also parties.

Like I said, raves were a lot of fun, but I doubt I would go to one now. I'm too old, and from what I hear the NYC is pretty much dead. I am just happy that I was able to experience the scene during its heyday.

I think the OP is just a jaded raver who got bored of the scene. He had nothing else to do except hate and look down upon people who are having the time of their life, and he's just mad he can't have fun.

I personally love raves. I attend a rave every weekend, and been doing thing nonstop for a few years ago. Sometimes I go to two raves, or even more during a weekend session. I love, every aspect about it, going there enjoying the music, a place to dance, meet people, cuddle puddles, lightshows, backrubs, take drugs without being judged, trade kandi, the philosophy of PLUR(PEACE,LOVE,UNITY,RESPECT) is still very much alive at rave, I can go on and on about how great raves are, etc... A rave is unlike any other place in earth.

-PLUR

Rolling and dancing are fun.

The fucked up 16 year olds dancing around in their underwear are not.

im surprised they were actually dancing lol, usually cuddlepuddle / etarded lying on the floor takes up 30%+ of the room at the raves ive been to

im pretty sure we talked about this at octopus nebula

i was never huge on raves, but i did go to a couple and while they were a blast ive kind of just grown out of them. plus kandi kids are rediculous.

-Gangsters are going a lot these days along with bros. . (not my favorite.)

Bros.... worse than any other subculture in modern day united states, even worse than scene kids. If i got a dollar for everytime so idiot fucking bro wanted to race me in his piece of shit truck id be living on a yacht in dubai. Seriously, if you guys dont live on the west coast or near it, be thankful you dont know what a bro is.

I live in vegas, and here they all wear socal shit when they dont live there, always pick fights, ruin drug quality (for awhile, the only heroin hookups i had were bros who would cut the shit out of the heroin and only care about money)

I'll just stop my rant there, kind of derailing the thread, sorry, im sick and needed to take my hatred of bros out.

I've always raved sporadically, and always liked it best that way. I have no intention of ever giving it up for good, even if that means sending the kids away to summer camp. I agree with everyone who said that raves don't take away your life if you don't let them. Everyday people with normal jobs and lives tearing it up at a rave every now and then are kind of like people in Africa who lead regular lives in the cities, but once or twice a year attend a ceremony deep in their ancestral tribal land, where everyone ends up getting possessed by spirits and dances around in a frenzy for a day or so.

I might even graduate to upper management of raving someday -- producing music and/or hosting parties, if I strike it rich enough. There will be no one underaged, or anyone dressed like a gangster, at any party I throw. The location will be secret, too.
