School suspends 'legal high' trio
Three pupils have been given a "short" suspension from a Kent boarding school after buying a "legal high" drug.

Cranbrook School said the sixth form students, who had admitted buying Mephedrone, will attend a drug intervention programme next year.

The drug, more commonly known as "bubble" or "drone", has a similar effect to ecstasy and is freely sold as a "designer drug" on the internet.

The teenagers are believed to have bought the drug for a use at a party.

The school said the head of chemistry explained to the other sixth formers about the dangers of "legal high" drugs during a special assembly.

Head teacher Angela Daly said: "We know that teenagers experiment but we never condone drug misuse, whether it be alcohol, tobacco, illegal drugs or these new legal highs, the illicit drugs.

"Our school drug policy is clear and pro-active and we followed our policy closely with this Mephedrone incident."

She added: "We hope our students will have learned the truth about this substance and will be able to make more informed choices in the future.

"Teenagers are the target market for these legal highs and other drugs. We take our duty of care very seriously and always look to educate our students, about healthy lifestyle choices."

The drug, which is snorted up the nose, has already been banned by a variety of countries, including Denmark, Finland and Israel.

It's all this news about Mephedrone, Methylone, Butylone etc. that's letting kids know about these substances.

"You can even get high on cat urine, and that can get you really high.. Like really, really high.. M'kay? ... I prolly shouldn't have told you that.. M'kay

I don't get how they can suspend these students or force them to attend drug intervention? Unless its illegal for minors to purchase "legal highs" or its written in the school rules you can't use them then I don't understand what rule they have broken?

I'm not too thrilled with all of this mephedrone news coverage.

I personally think it's a shit drug, and a closer government probe and possible scheduling of the substance wouldn't affect me directly. But it will cause these same prying eyes to focus their predatory lenses on some truly worthwhile compounds as yet remain (by an act of god perhaps) unscheduled (here in the U.S. at least).

^deaths have started cropping up, there was one in UK news a few weeks ago I believe, i'll try n find the article for you. :)

But with how cheap & easy mephedrone is to get (I mean in london you can get it delivered by some shadey guy same day ffs...) & not to forget how hard it is on the body (I dunno the science behind it, but in the early hours after a night of fun you do start feeling pretty fucking bad. (heart palpitations, blood pressures so high, chest pains...) This stuff is gonna start killing folk all over when all the I IZ HARD M8 BOSH A GRAM IN ONE idiots get a hold of it.. ;_;

^ you may want to read up on that recent UK 'death'. There was a 14 year old girl who was crucified by the media as a dope fiend for supposedly ODing on meph very recently. A retraction just slipped through the cracks.

Seems you're right! Strange how this is the only article I can find for it - it's not even on the BBC. Hmm.

As far as how you can be suspended for a legal high, most school drug policies specifically forbid any drug except for intended use of prescribed/OTC medicine. This would cover legal highs precisely because they're "highs" and not medicines. I don't see a school being happy if a pupil started CWE'ing solpadeine max in the chemistry lab, although they are not illegal.

I was once suspended from school for methylphenidate possession (without prescription) and this comes under a similar heading.

^ It doesn't really come under a similar heading, I was suspended from school for the exact same thing but a prescription drug is restricted to those with a prescription, which we did not have, legal highs are not restricted at all.

How the hell can you get in trouble for doing something that isn't illegal? Doesn't that completely go against the idea of laws? fucking tyrant state....

They had to cover their asses and to show complaining parents that they are serious.

If they had NOT punished the kids, the parents would have felt powerless, and because it is to so many people a clear-cut case of right vs. wrong, they would have garnered much sympathy.

In the long run, my guess is that it would have resulted in the illegalization of the drug sooner (though I also suspect that it will be made illegal relatively soon in any case).
