Makes me angry and sick.

I was at the bank today and I overheard some hick telling the teller "yeeep me n my lil boy got are first deee togather".

It just makes me so mad knowing there are people out there who could look at a living breathing emotion feeling creature such as a deer and have the nerve to bring it physical excrutiating pain and shoot it with a gun. And to get it's blood on you, then cut it open. It takes a certain kind I think.

And he was actually proud of what he did. What happens if you shoot the deer and it runs off and you can't find it? The deer is going to suffer and bleed to death, which is a horrible way to die, all because some hick fucker has to satisfy an alpha male urge to "hunt me sum big game".

Ever heard of the grocery, where you can buy dead animal that was killed humanely? Now I know that a lot of livestock farms have their own problems raising animals in a humane way, but not all of them, and that's a different subject.

Why the need to hunt? In this day and age when grocery's are all over? How could someone enjoy bringing pain and misery to a defenseless creature? It is sick and cruel and I wish it would be outlawed.

I'm sure I will get lots of crap for this, but surely there are other Bluelighters here who share my anger.

Humanely? I think you are sadly misinformed. The livestock industry is all about producing the biggest cow/pig/chicken, in the shortest amount of time, the cheapest way possible. Corporate board rooms could give a shit about animal happiness. And "a lot of livestock farms" is basically all of them, or at least all the ones who want to stay in business. Have you seen Food Inc.?

I'd much rather hunt a deer, dress it myself (or take it to the butcher), and eat it knowing what it took to get that meat and exactly where it came from than go to the supermarket and buy a carbon monoxide infused, cellophane wrapped piece of meat which had probably had a worse life than a deer I killed. You want to talk about suffering? Who suffered more? The deer which ran free it's entire life until it met its end? Or the cow thats been standing knee deep in its own manure, crowded together with a shitload of other cows its entire life?

Which is more sustainable? Mass producing beef or hunting?

lol I work and live in a very rural area, and I personally know alot of farmers who raise cows and chickens. And none of the cows stand knee deep in manure. They live in very humane conditions. All the animals are naturally raised, the chickens are free to roam anywhere on their land, same with the cows. When it comes time to kill, the cows are killed instantly and painless with an airgun, no pain, cow dies instantly. The chickens yes are killed with an axe but none of them, and I know this for fact, none of them are given drugs to grow faster or steroids to get fatter. Contrary to what you might believe, there ARE farmers out there that have compassion and love for the animals they raise to slaughter.

So yes you can buy meat at the grocery that is raised naturally, in fact the grocery close to me has a section devoted to "Naturally Raised Livestock."

My neighbor hangs dead deer from a tree and skins them, I can watch it from my back window... And I live in Baltimore! It doesn't bother me that he kills deer, it's just kinda gross to see guts and shit as I eat my oodles of noodles.

I never said there wasn't. But they are far and few between or are family farms which don't supply to big chain grocery stores where the majority of people buy their meat. If you're trying to turn a profit, why raise a chicken in 90 days when you can raise a bigger one in 65 days by pumping it full of growth hormones and antibiotics? Why devote 1 acre of pasture to a small number of steers when you can cram them in there like sardines and feed them corn instead of grass like they're designed to eat?

Over the decades the number of farms in America has slowly decreased because traditional humane ways of farming are being pushed out. I never said sustainable humane farms didn't exist, but they are far and few between -- and the majority of people don't buy their meat from them.

I personally don't hunt, but I have a few friends that do. As you probably know, its deer season right now. From talking to them, there's nothing "enjoyable" about the killing aspect of hunting. They take pride in making a difficult shot and they take pride in the animal they killed. It will provide food and sustenance for them. I've never once heard any of them talk about the joy they felt knowing the animal suffered. Hunting is a means to an end.

You can bet the large meat packers and poultry companies lobbied for the laxest requirements on what can be determined "free range", "organic", and "naturally raised." Steers packed into pens knee deep in manure fed organically certified corn free of hormones and antibiotics is still "organic", right? But that doesn't necessary mean the living conditions are any better for the animals than non-organically produced beef. Labels can be deceiving. The beef & poultry industry is a shady business is all I'm saying.

Bedhead, you mentioned that your friends take pride in the "shot". Well can't they go to a shooting range and take target practice? And can't they get food other places besides deer hunting?

So there are other ways to get the solutions you mentioned, target practice and food. They would just prefer to end innocent deer's lives instead.

And yeah maybe the decent farmers are in the minority, but what they are doing is good.

Smotpoker, I see a double standard in your argument. You eat meat from the grocery store yet you're against people harvesting their own meat.

You're also misinformed about rifle hunting. I hunt with a '30-.06 and the last deer I shot fell where it stood....no running off and bleeding to death in pain. It was a perfectly placed shot right behind the front shoulder and penetrated the deer's lungs and quite possibly it's heart.

The only way I see you winning this argument is by becoming a full-fledged vegetarian. Only then will you be able to come preaching to us about how inhumane the killing of animals is.

lets pretend for one moment that your naive childish view corporate farming is accurate (which it is not)- it doesnt matter... the end result is still the same.

a hunter kills an animal for sport... sometimes eats it, sells it, mounts it or whatever the hell it is those people do. you choose to eat meat killed by others. you dont need to, you choose to. i see very little difference between someone killing for sport and someone too lazy to back up their convictions with actions.

This is a 'Good Thing' Cornishman....we had a blackbird nesting in our garden once and we watched as 2 chicks were born and reared. All was beautiful in the garden....then one day we came home to a heck of a racket...investigation showed a magpie surrounded by lots of other birds, all sorts, all screeching at this magpie. I thought they were having a go at it and as I liked them at the time, rushed out to shoo them off. It was only at that point I realised it had one of the blackbird chicks, with it's skin torn from its throat in a real bad way.Then I realised I'd have to kill it as the magpie wasn't coming back....a few minutes later we realised its mate had got the other one, in the same condition, over the wall in the local school playground, so I had to do the same there. I bought an air rifle to kill any magpies that came into our garden in the future...then I found out they are a protected species!!!....unless they are damaging your crops - so if anyone asks, the blackbirds are our crops and the magpies deserve all they get.
He keeps it in a cage to attract other magpies that will come to investigate and defend their territory against this invader (it won't be a locally caught magpie) - then he can shoot them!!! - perfectly reasonable.

p.s. - I am a pacifist and a great respecter of life, but magpies are spawn of the antichrist!! (at least)

Assuming you're in the uk...
Magpies are on the defra's pest list meaning you can shoot them all year round without any problems.
The "protected species" would include for example starlings where if they do damage and you can prove it you can shoot them as you stated but would need defra licence.

1. As previously stated a lot of people eat what they kill or donate the meat to the needy through various programs available at various meat processors with no cost to the person who killed the deer.

2. The Department of Conservation tracks deer populations to make sure that they remain at levels adequate for their environment. If the deer population is scarce, they do not issue as many permits. Conversely, if the deer population is exceedingly large more permits will be issued as a form of population control.

3. Any ethical hunter is going to make sure to kill the animal as quickly and cleanly as possible.

I don't personally hunt because I think it's boring as shit, but it's certainly not as bad as the Bambi slaughterfest you have conjured up in your mind.
