Indie distributor Apparition continues its aggressive pickup strategy of late and has acquired the rights to the highly anticipated cult indie sequel "The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day" says the trades.

Troy Duffy's followup to 1999's "The Boondock Saints" has Norman Reedus and Sean Patrick Flanery reprising their roles as the MacManus brothers who do battle against the Boston mob as they avenge the death of a beloved priest. Billy Connolly, Clifton Collins Jr. and Julie Benz co-star.

Apparition and Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group will release the film in the US via platform rollout on October 30th. Apparition is also releasing Jane Campion's "Bright Star," royal period drama "The Young Victoria," blaxploitation spoof "Black Dynamite" and Terrence Malick's "The Tree of Life" in coming months.

I'll check this out when it comes out.

The documentary surrounding the making of the original Boondock Saints was fascinating and I'm glad that Duffy is getting another chance. Despite the fact that he's a bit of a psycho he is damn talented considering no formal training in film and the sheer amount of alcohol he consumes on a daily basis.
 
I thought the first one had some good dialogue, but for the most part it failed to live up to the hype.
 
Yeah, I know all about the crazy backstory. If anything, the documentary just gave me more hope as a alcoholic asshole with aspirations of making a movie.

I didn't dislike Boondock Saints, I put it in the same league as movies like Shoot em Up or Crank... with a little dash of Poolhall Junkies and The Boiler Room thrown in. Mindless, testosterone laden amusement with some really great dialog, but without a whole lot of substance.
 
I prefered 'Boondock Saints' to the flicks you mentioned.

I particularly liked Willem Dafoes character and the unusual non-linear story structure in which he scanned the aftermath of the crime scenes prior to them occuring. It was such a simple idea, but so effective in terms of heightening the tension of the scenes to come. And even more inspired, to finally combine the two at the same time by superimposing the gunfight with Dafoe's musical autopsy.

Whereas I thought Crank (the only other directoral debut you mentioned - aside from Boiler Room which I haven't seen) was completely forgetable, aside from being based around a relatively interesting concept for an action film.

If anything, the documentary just gave me more hope as a alcoholic asshole with aspirations of making a movie.

i'm only planning to see it so i can sit in the back under the projector room with a mickey of gin and jerk off to julie benz who hopefully gets naked for the camera again
 
Just got back from this.

First, a disclaimer: I'll be the first to admit that BDS has very narrow appeal; most people will see it as crap, which I feel is entirely, objectively true. That said, I still enjoy the first one, in a guilty-pleasure sense; these are movies with chicken-or-the-egg fandoms.

What I liked about this outing:
*More humor.
*Revisiting old characters.
*One really impressive shootout scene.

What I disliked:
*Movie is at least a half-hour too long. By the last overstylized, Woo-esque fight scene with its hackneyed action (unlimited ammo, always hitting the bad guys even when outnumbered ten-to-one, etc.) and forgettable setup, I really was getting sick of the film.
*Benz is not Dafoe, and her accent is a nightmare.
*Romeo: A completely extraneous character who couldn't be more stereotypical if he walked out of a Frito Bandito ad.
*Benz is not Dafoe.

Nothing more or less than a 50-cent action flick. I can't see it being as popular with the fans as the original, but hey, I've been surprised before.
 
just watched it, and i really liked it.
they bring back a ton of the previous cast. an impressive amount, actually. considering that this movie had such a limited release and all.


that being said, i really liked the first movie, but i have a built-in sense of pessimism aimed at all sequels. i watched the first 10 minutes or so and just thought "man, if they just keep doing this the whole time, they can keep from fucking it up" and that's just what they did.

basically, it's just an expansion of the first movie. a ton of the same cast, and a bunch of references to the first one. it's not better than the first, but by no means worse IMO. so if you liked boondock saints, you'll like all saints day.

if you didn't like BDD, then you won't like this one any more.
 
Ugh, I just watched Overnight. It was nearly unbearable... and not in a captivating way. It's like sitting in a cramped room with the biggest asshole you've met in your entire life for over an hour while they get drunk and call you names.

What in the fuck were they doing by employing a Scrappy Doo character like this guy? Surely they know better than that. :|

The original compared to this one went from one end of the spectrum to the other IMO. Ghastly nonsense.

Julie Benz looked damn hot, annoying, but hot, so that is the only reason I give this one star.
 
I started watching the 2nd one and had to turn it off after about 25mins... it was terrible imo, the cheesiest movie ever written. it was literally hard to watch. its so bad it almost ruins the legacy of the 1st one... bad. just bad.
 
I actually enjoyed it just as much as the first. The original was slightly better just because the idea was new. Watched it one night and ended up watching it again the next day which is rare for me and movies.
 
This was disappointing, to say the least. The plot involving the brothers being drawn back was complete garbage. Clifton Collins Jr's character was annoying and stupid. His only purpose, it seemed, was to fill the void left by Rocco. Didn't work. And Julie Benz's character, who seemed to be channeling Kyra Sedgwick's character from The Closer, was just plain embarrassing.

You would think Troy Duffey would have had time to come up with something much better than this in the 10 years between the two films. It's not as if he was busy making other movies.
 
This movie was disappointing and unimaginative. A lot of recycled action, themes and twists from the first one that were just pushed and exaggerated. The first movie was so unique that there is no way a sequel could have lived up to it. There are some good action scenes and enough going on to sit through it though
