An Australian Professor who is the head of the Psychopharmacology Laboratory at Sydney University has taken a leaf out of former British government drugs advisor Professor David Nutt's highly publicised book, by adding his scientific expertise to the foggy landscape which is 'drugs policy'.

Professor Iain McGregor was quoted as saying that there was nothing wrong with the 'designer drug' Mephedrone. A synthetic compund which is marketed widely on the Internet under an assortment of names which include 'MM-Cat', '4-MMC' and 'Plant Food Meow'.

Mephedrone, which is banned in Findland, Israel, Sweden and Denmark, comes in either powder or pill form and is derived from the khat plant.

Khat is a legal stimulant normally consumed by chewing, which is widely available on UK high streets in communities with large ethnic minorities originating from Somalia, Ethiopia and the Sudan.

Professor McGregor, director of Sydney University's Psychopharmacology Laboratory, was quoted as saying that there was nothing wrong with the drug.

"Unfortunately for people like myself ... who [is] here to tell people drugs are bad, there doesn't appear to be a whole lot that is bad about it," Professor McGregor said.

A statement which brings a little more perspective to the UK's irrational (and hopelessly failed) war on drugs.

Clearly prohibition is proving to be far more harmful than the drugs themselves. And in an ever tightening economic grip, which the rest of Europe seems to have slipped free from, can we really afford to continue to prosecute 50 year old cannabis users who are only breaking the law whilst smoking a joint in the privacy of their own home?

For the rest of their lives they remain, law abiding citizens.

Post #5 contains commentary by Professor Iain McGregor about this article.

Taken out of context probably? We all know mephedrone has killed a few people, and led to amputations and such in others. It's definitely not as safe as MDMA.

I would rather see someone like him arguing how safe currently illegal and well researched drugs like MDMA and cannabis are. Honestly I don't think there is enough research out there to be saying an addictive and obviously cardiotoxic drug like mephedrone is "safe".

Yeah this report really doesn't tell much. And it definitely doesn't convince me that Mephedrone is safe.

hi (Riklet),

that article was one of the worst pieces of journalism i have ever read, and completely misrepresented my views.

i had a long conversation with the journalist and assisted her in every way possible to access further information about mephadrone.

my viewpoint was that there was hardly any systematic research on mephadrone and as such we were unaware of its toxicity.

if was a "don't know" rather than a green light to use the drug.

i think what she wrote was almost criminally irresponsible as well as an abuse of the courtesy i showed her in discussing the topic in depth.

i have made this clear to her in an email sent today. i guess i should learn to expect this from murdoch press journos - sigh!

thank you for your thoughts on the matter. i would be grateful if you would also forward your views to the journalist involved:

Marnie O'Neill <[email protected]>

best wishes, iain

Iain McGregor sent me this, in response to a rather lengthy and ranty e-mail from me fairly late last night. I was basically saying he was totally irresponsible and misguided in saying such stuff, and there's been so little research done on mephedrone no one can know, however anecdotal evidence shows that it's a fairly damaging and addictive drug, and i've personally had health issues from a single use of it, and it's pretty likely to be linked to a number of deaths and hospitalisations.

Also said that Dr Nutt in the UK would never express views like he (supposedly) did and that if he wanted to be confrontational he should focus upon MDMA, a drug which has existed for almost 100 years and has undergone lots of testing (like aMT and LSD).

I'm going to e-mail the journalist who interviewed him, like he suggests, cos tbh she's doing something even more irresponsible; making up bullshit and tagging it with a scientific logo. What a fucking cunt. Blehhh.

Proof ? Are we sure that what they consums nothing else ?
Has HPLC test been done on product ?

This is good news in a way, I hope the possible medical benefits of these contemporary recreational "research chemicals" is not forgotten as atleast a possibility by science.

Nice one for getting in touch and setting the facts straight Rik :)

When reading I was sort of "goldfish mouth opening" thinking.. "No, this is relatively new and is already speculated to be rather damaging.."

Stupid fucking "Jernaliztz" :X:p:|

lol stupid journalist can't conjugate, it's 'people are', not 'people is', wat a retard

Everyone has already said it but from my own observations mephedrone is not safe.

The words 'safe' and 'dangerous' should be completely disregarded when talking about drugs (or something like driving). The are subjective / relative terms... it should just be that drugs (and driving!) carry risks.
