I was wondering which one you guys think is more effective?

I had an ambien prescription but it wasn't consistently working for me (some days it would work, other days it wouldn't), and now my doctor prescribed me some lunesta, but I'm too scared to try it :S i heard it leaves a metal aftertaste that's unbearable, is that true?

And how are they different?

Thank you!

oops i posted this in the wrong place by accident, i meant to post it on "Other Drugs". Sorry!

If your doctor prescribed it to YOU then it's fine to try it. If you got it from a friend then morally i'd suggest against taking it, but if you were actually given a prescription then i don't see the harm as long as you aren't overdoing the recommended dosage.

ive used lunesta a couple times, and i always took 6mg-12mg, i always fell asleep reletively quickly id gethe metal mouth the next day, which was horrible. but if you want to fall asleep, it certainly works

To be honest no one can answer this question for you....you just have to try each out and see which works for you. Ambien did nothing for me, whereas lunesta made me sleep like a baby. But it might affect you in a totally different way. Thats just how the Z-class is.

From all I've heard from various doctors & people who have tried both of those medications, Lunesta is kind of like a second-rate Ambien.

The two upsides to Lunesta that I have heard of though are 1) It doesn't make people accidentally "trip out" sometimes like Ambien does... At least, if it does, it does to a MUCH lesser degree, & 2) Even though normal Ambien is quite short-lasting, Lunesta is supposed to last for an even shorter duration of time, making it more ideal for people who only can get literally a few hours of sleep.

Also tolerances to both of those medications develop pretty easily, & even though I believe Lunesta & Ambien share some chemical similarities, a tolerance to one of those medications only partially carries over to the other, if it carries over at all. I know my mother recently got switched from Ambien to Lunesta because she'd developed too large of a tolerance to Ambien.
