Film The Men Who Stare at Goats

It's like this new movie about how the government tried to make soldiers psychic or something.. and in the movie they use lsd to like make better soldiers or something. It has george cluney in it, so I think it's gonna be at least a well seen movie for the most part.

Do you think more people will be curious about what lsd? I think hopefully this movie will show lsd in a positive view and maybe make more people question what the government tells us about drugs.

I'm not really sure how they will portray the drug though... since I haven't seen it of course. But what do you guys think?

It's a comedy, so it probably won't take any serious or righteous approach towards LSD or other drugs.

This should go in "Drugs in the Media" methinks.

that makes me want to see this movie a whole lot more. it looked ridiculous to begin with, and george clooney, kevin spacey and ewan mcgregor are all good actors. jeff bridges too. i guess the way they market it as based on a true story is it being loosely based around mkultra.

The movie is based on LSD trials? I find that hard to believe...I'm pretty sure what the movie is about is the government trying to find a way to make psychic powers available to anyone (the soldiers) as a new weapon.

However, it'd definitely make me want to go see it even more if it had to do with LSD.

well I didn't mean that's all they did was use lsd... I guess I should've said they used it in the film for that. That's just part of the movie.. not really "what it's about"

Yeah, the premise was really amusing. The movie spends most of its time playing off this -- the absurdity of our government and our military. Psychological warfare has changed a lot over the decades. The film touches on different parts of this. The main examination, though, is of Jeff Bridges' character as he heads some sort of New Age peace force idea.

There's not much going on in terms of plot. The film's trailer basically tells the story. What's left are some great performers doing some great gags. It almost might work better as a series of skits. With lesser actors this movie probably wouldn't have been possible. Clooney's character is the best because even though he is a master of technique, he still thinks a lot of the hippy stuff is crap. It's also hilarious to watch MacGregor (Obi Wan from Star Wars) having the concept of military "Jedi" explained to his character.

i was listening to a bit on NPR with the writer/reporter of the book. he said he met the man that 'could kill goats' just by looking at them. he asked if he was still in practice. he said he was and that he had killed his hamster just two weeks ago. he then took out a video tape and showed it to the reporter. the man started at his hamster for three whole days... the hamster fell to one side... then a few minutes later it got up, brushed off it's fur and started moving around again. the reporter was (rightfully) amused.

Not a bad comedy movie. Bridges reprising his Dude role. Spacey being a general asshole. Clooney being a madman. What wasn't to like?
The whole flick had this undercurrent gag that MacGregor was a Jedi, genius that they got him cause it wouldn't have worked otherwise.

I loved this movie.

I have to see it again, maybe I wouldn't like it as much, but upon first viewing I thought it was funny and had interesting points brought up. The cast was awesome too, everyone played their role well. Plus the LSD scenes were great.

They made it into a buddy/road movie basically.

The book & the documentary cover it all what I'm interested in though, I don't think I really need added story.

Plus Clooney annoys the tits off me.
