SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- A needle exchange program in Puerto Rico is testing a vending machine that provides drug users with clean syringes after-hours to fight the spread of HIV and hepatitis C.

Dr. Jose Vargas Vidot is the founder of Community Initiative, the U.S. island territory's only needle-exchange group. He says a single machine will make clean syringes available at night outside the group's office in Hato Rey.

Vargas said Tuesday that drug counseling offices that distribute syringes are open only during daylight hours.

The vending machine program targets young addicts reluctant to seek help.

Drug users can get syringes, cookers, cotton filters, gauze and sterile water to prepare drugs for injection by inserting a special token.

Oh, and note the one ignorant comment the person wrote at the end of the article.

Well.. this is a nice idea, but I'd still prefer a MMJ dispenser =p

+1 for the ignorant dipshit who commented on the article too haha

^ They should market them to US frat houses. Fuck charging for a red cup, they could make bank haha

Here in Japan, there are beer vending machines.
Why not marijuana, LSD, and more?
I love the idea.

We could have those in America too if people would just get their heads out of their asses, be adults and make a conscious effort to change the way our culture perceives substance use.

Personally I don't like the idea of a vending machine dispensing needles. I remember being a kid and buying packs of smokes outta vending machines because I knew I would be carded anywhere I went. Frankly the idea of some 14 year old kid going and getting needles outta this machine to "try shooting drugs" for the first time and dropping dead worries me. Don't get me wrong I am all for clean IV methods, and I feel that clean rigs should be made readily available to people who IV drugs, but this seems a bit extreme. How does one obtain one of these "special tokens" anyway? Are they given out at the exhcange program?

Lots of liability here...

^I think you answered your own question there man. I hit the cigg machines myself when I was a kid so as I first read what you were saying it was scary to apply to this situation, but I don't see these coins being handed out to kids all that easily. And the addicts that get them are still human, they aren't going to be going out of their way to give them to uninitiated kids- even if they were selling them, I don't see ANYONE handing something like that over to a kid.

Thanks for the replies guys! :)

I think it's a great idea! Anything to help prevent the spread of HIV and Hepatitis is good! And lets face it, sometimes junkies will go to desperate messures to inject drugs if the syringe program isn't open at the moment, and they will share needles. I know I've done it in the past...and now I'm paying the price for it(Hep C). :(

Bring on the vending machines to the USA! :D

^Why would kids want to shoot up because they saw a vending machine? They aren't going to shoot up unless they have access to hard drugs, and if they have access to hard drugs I'd rather they also had access to clean equipment tbh.

If you look very closely at the top of the middle package in that picture, you'll see that it also includes a durex condom. You get a syringe, a cotton filter, a cooker, sterile water, gauze, [ii]and[/i] a motherfuckin' Durex condom! Hot damn! :D That's like a full meal with a dank dessert thrown in. Score some fire Puerto Rican heroin and blow, and you've got yourself one hell of a party, that's for sure. :D
