CORTLAND, N.Y. — Authorities say an 18-year-old patient high on psychedelic mushrooms stabbed a nurse in the chest with a pocket knife during an examination at a central New York hospital.

Alex Stephens of Freeville was charged with felony assault and criminal possession of a weapon after the incident at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday at Cortland Regional Medical Center. He was arraigned in Cortland City Court and jailed without bail.

Police say the 53-year-old male nurse is in guarded condition with internal bleeding.

Police say Stephens had ingested hallucinogenic psilocybin (sy-luh-SY'-buhn) mushrooms while visiting friends at Tompkins Cortland Community College.

Authorities did not know whether Stephens had a lawyer.
 
I don't mean to sound flippant, but where's the middle of that story?

that really sucks for everyone involved. carrying a weapon so rarely leads to any good, especially if you are a partier.
 
Not enough info in the story. It does say male nurse though. Maybe it was an unauthorized exam, like a prostate check? Plead self-defense.
 
Why would you go to a hospital/doctor if you're on shrooms? Can people really not plan stuff out? I would understand this happening if the dude was like arrested for being high in public, then went to the doctor (and wasn't searched). But it sounds like he just went in for a regular check-up or something. Ridiculous.

It happened at 1:30am so I doubt it was a scheduled appt.

Right.....It's societys fault...

I tend to think that he probably got really high and in his wastedness stabbed someone making it his fault.


Fail to see how everyone is to blame.
 
Would you not have given him an Antipsychotic straight away when you'd determined he was on a Hallucinogenic? Surely that's standard practice. Especially if he's acting a bit Psychotic :|

I'm guessing he went their on his own for help because he was freaking out, if cops had brought him in he would have been searched first. Definitely should have hit em with some risperdal or something though =\

hope the poor guy who got tagged makes it through ok.. hopefully he ends up with a nice settlement and retirement for his troubles =)
