Two young men in Linköping in south-east Sweden have died after overdosing on the psychoactive drug methedrone, a substance that is not yet illegal in Sweden and can be bought on the internet, local news website Corren.se reports.

The results of a post mortem examination were finalised last week following the deaths of the two young men during the summer.

"We have classified the deaths as methedrone poisoning," said Arne Eklund, acting manager at the National Board of Forensic Medicine's Linköping branch.

Police in the city are frustrated at the legal status of the drug. Having recently seized a large quantity of the drug, they may have no alternative but to return it to its owner.

"It's a nightmare," Chief Inspector Magnus Råsten told Corren.

The Ministry of Health and Social Affairs is currently in the process of preparing a draft proposal with the aim of classifying the drug as a narcotic. The government is expected to approve the proposal by the end of the year.

According to the Swedish National Institute of Public Health, methedrone, or bk-PMMA, is a new substance that has become more widely available in 2009.

The institute said the substance brings on a euphoric rush in users and could be viewed as a substitute for the related drug mephedrone, which was classified as a narcotic in May of this year.

I don't like being right on experimental drug toxicity issues when the consequences are negative. I hope this is a pretty clear message to anyone still choosing to use mephedrone, in any case.
 
so you think it's better to use street things that are cut to death with god knows what? at least with rc's you know what they are in them. yes there is not enough research (if any) but still, its pure.
 
Then for God's sake pick a research chemical that appears less dangerous, it's not the only stimulant out there.
 
Whoah they had a huge bust of the stuff and have to return it to the owner? Damn. And also whoever said RCs are pure, stop. Unless you are a chemis an made it yourself good luck on knowing the purity.

erm... you do realise that the article is referring to methedrone and not mephedrone?
 
No, ack. God these names are stupid. I still don't think many of these substituted cathinones are safe, though.
 
Methedrone is 4-Methoxymethcathinone (bk-PMMA, PMMC)
Mephedrone is 4-Methylmethcathinone (4-MMC)

I wish the names were less confusing also.

heh. :) I hear what you are saying though. The mix up in the names doesn't make your warning any less relevant - even though meph is supposedly slightly less 'toxic' than the meth.

Where oh where did I say people don't die from ODing on more common drugs?

The point I was trying to make is that RCs are relatively *new* and they haven't been around long enough that people should be so reckless with them, even if they make you feel like a million bucks (at first).

At least the common street stimulants -have- been around long enough that there's much more documentation concerning them.

Edit - I am by no means advocating choosing cocaine or meth over RCs (they all have their dangers), but with RCs it's really iffy because we don't know well enough (compared to the more common stims) what they do to the human body.

Edit 2 - Sorry to ramble and go off topic, but stuff like this makes me wanna stick to alcohol, weed and pharms. Anyway I'll shutup now.

When I wrote my comment I think I had misread it as mephedrone, then when I looked at the article again I saw bk-PMMA, which is terribly ambiguous because it could mean beta-keto-para-methylmethamphetamine or beta-keto-para-methoxymethamphetamine. So I had to check wikipedia to figure out what was going on, just to be sure. I figured they must have been two different compounds since someone called me on it, though.

It was pretty much beyond me why anyone would bother making a cathinone version of PMMA in the first place because it's known to be so dangerous, too.

Saw this coming from miles far unfortunately. The worry is outspoken in the bk-PMMA thread.
I have this stuff somewhere as a collectors curiosity but I was not going to use it. Have considered for a moment or two, in quite low doses, but certainly not more than those very few moments. For the rest I'm just as afraid of it as I think we ought to be. Don't think there is any safe ground with this material.

Of course I'm off chems for a while in general, but I certainly hope this will be a warning until it becomes outlawed and long after.
 
As popular as it got in Sweden, I am surprised only two died of it during the period it was legal. And these guys died at the same time, so it makes me wonder if they mixed it with something else.

Condolences to their family, though. Its never funny when shit like this happens. Only if we educated our people about drugs the correct way, there would be far less risk taking. This is a country where we say cannabis is as bad as street heroin, lol.
