Is it just me, or has electronic music gone to shit since the 90s?

Early-mid 90's were the best era in music in my opinion. So much countless good music, Generation X was full of creative geniuses. 2000s are an era of simple confusion with all this technology and the basic collapse of the record industry. Music has become more intimate, more available, as a result, and as was said before, means you have more crappy products among the gold. I think eventually among all this technological chaos we will figure out a way to organize things a bit better to make more impressive artists more accessible without necessarily distancing them as was done in the 20th century. It'll be interesting to see how that works out.

Is it just me or was music just shit in the 90's?
All you hafta do is listen to one of those 'best of the 90's' albums to get like 2 solid hours of crap that was played at kids parties like Gina G, however, it think it depends on the genre. Pop was definitely awful then, but is equally so now, dance etc however, was noteably better...

I totally agree. I think as of 2005, an uprising of great dance music (house, techno, tech house, minimal, whatever) started to show. It became a LOT less ravey and more towards people who can ACTUALLY appreciate the music, I consider it a lot more of an ART per say now than the 90s... which i loved by the way, but the drugs were better in the 90s, and a hell of a lot easier to find if you ask me.

I totally agree. I miss the 90s a lot in general, everything was a lot better! Music these days really sucks with an exception of a few. I'll always be an alice in chains fanatic :]

Hmm and the comparision to the drugs were better and the music was better begins. :)

Imo, I was too young to enjoy the music in the 90's.. With the collapse of the record industry and the beginging of the solo artist. Alot of talent that would go undiscovered is being put out there. But under the same token there is 10 fold the amount of crap.

The crap to gold ratio has decreased IMO, but the amount of gold has increased over time.

to the above poster re USA & EDM, i totally agree. i swear i am the only EDM lover in texas but i have to call it techno, it's just easier. in fact, when i went out to Nocturnal (SKREAM!), i slipped several times and called it techno.

as to the OP, you are entitled to that opinion. is there more crap techno now, yep. but there is also a lot of really good music as the entire techno genre has exploded (perfect example is Dubstep). i miss that 90's techno sound but i also miss the Folk/Hippie music of the 60's ie "Diamonds and Rust" or "Tom Dooley".

/i like the Essential Selection, it really does get me ready for the weekend

Dude at least you live in a country that has something like Radio 1. Try living in America where 95% of the population calls all EDM techno. You don't know how annoying that can be if you're into electronic music in a big way.

YES! finally someone says it. Especially when it's usually, those same fucking kids who only know "Smack my bitch up" or some random song off The Matrix.:|

I feel that music is the most interesting when people are busy creating new sounds rather than creating things that sound like other things. After a new genre is discovered it is only interesting for so long before people start trying to replicate a specific sound. The problem I have is when producers go into a project wanting to make something that fits into a specific genre, it does nothing but limit their creation. This is what happened to electronic music to some extent, everything was so new and strange when it first started popping up in the late 80's and early 90's.

**edit**

I forgot the answer the original question.

I don't think it has gotten worse necessarily, it just hasn't gotten all that much more interesting as a whole.

Dunno, I'm really loving the way minimal techno is going - harder and faster without simply returing to detroit. Also, have recently started to get really into modeselektor and moderat.

really? i mean i have come to the realisation that I am more of a techno and minimal person.. well, I just think its not as BANG as it was in 07, it wasnt new or anything but its fan base sure did. People started to discover minimal and techno (the techno thats influenced by minimal...you know what i mean right?). But like the person above me said, a lot of producers try and create something to fit the genre, so theres an obvious limitation to creativity.. in otherwords, shits just not as new anymore. Theres way too many fast percussion techno songs, and a LOT of minimal now a days is just so eew.

i still love the genres though

been hearing some decent mainstream tracks recently, maybe peoples taste in music is picking up again

In some aspects the OP is correct. Hip Hop was much better in the 90's, not that I was old enough to appreciate music back then but the hip hop that I listen to is almost exclusively 90's and some non-mainstream stuff from post 2000. EDM seems to be evolving a lot and I really don't know how you can say that EDM was better in the 90's.

I do agree with the OP. The style of music has changed a lot and in some cases for the worst.

In the UK the 90s had an incredible acid house seen which eventually changed to an amazing jungle scene. There was also some awesome old school garage. Oxide and Neutrino and the likes.

But that is preference I suppose.
