AN initiative to engage youth and provide more community art in Mt Evelyn has backfired with Morrison House students splashing a drug and alcohol-inspired mural across the Youth Enterprise Shed.

To passers-by the "street art" resembles three green monsters, a pink elephant, a roadrunner bird and the wording 'Fresh'.

Billanook Ward councillor Tim Heenan was last week tipped off on the art's hidden meaning by a Mt Evelyn teenager claiming adult residents had been duped.

Cr Heenan was shocked and disgusted to have uncovered the subliminal drug references to methamphetamines, PCP (phencyclidine) and ecstasy. The Australian Drug Foundation confirmed Cr Heenan's findings.

Morrison House chief executive Jan Simmons was disappointed with the response to the youth program. She said the alleged drug references were never the intention.

Morrison House is seeking expert opinion on the street art painted during the previous school holidays.

Mt Evelyn Traders Association president Steve Deakins condemned the work, labelling it as graffiti and something most people didn't want in their town.

"This is sheer vandalism - it's not art and it's not attractive. The graffiti doesn't paint Mt Evelyn in a good light."

The Mt Evelyn Community Bank supported Morrison House in hosting the street art workshop at the Enterprise Shed.

"It's a shame the graffiti has tarnished the bank's good reputation. For the Community Bank to be treated like this is pretty ordinary," Mr Deakins said.

Cr Heenan echoed the concerns, saying the "street art" has the potential to jeopardise [the Community Bank's] future involvement in the community.

"The VCAL program is an integral part of the community and it's disappointing the art's come from the students," Cr Heenan said.

So disappointing that the art came from students instead of people whose opinions mattered.

I think it looks awesome , fuck censorship

what is this country coming too

And by looking at the work I really dont see any drug references

let alone to Meth , PCP and ecstacy

I really don't even see how that is referring to drugs whatsoever! Even if it was I would be surprised if PCP was one of them since its basically unheard of in Australia.

Not to mention that people should be free to express what they want in their art, why should a reference to drugs mean somebody isn't allowed to display their art?

How the hell can anyone look at that mural and conclude that it's a reference to meth, ecstasy, and PCP?

It looks more acid-inspired to me! :D

^ lol nice one Huaca. A picture can say a thousand words.

This Cr Heenan guy is a proper dick head asshole for real. My god it is ART you ignorant fuck-tard.

it is a mural on the side of a shed for god-sakes, is it really that big of a deal?

Can anyone explain to me how its related to drugs? Im an Aussie and I honestly have no idea where the relation lies.

I think pink elephants (like the one in the mural) are actually metaphors for drug-induced hallucinations. I thought they symbolised acid trips, but according to Wikipedia they symbolise DT's from alcohol.

Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean the mural is drug inspired. It could just be a coincidence!

Utter bollocks. It is art and it looks wicked... Shut yerrr maaaaaaaffff :p

Pink Elephants have always been about alcohol (Remember the simpsons where barney was having a bad 'peyote' trip and was about to be attacked by monsters, but then he slammed a beer and a pink elephant kicked in the door and saved him? "Thanks Pinkey! You've always been there for me". *elephant winks and gives a thumbs up* lol)

I'm guessing they are saying the Road Runner is a meth refrence, 'speed' ah ha ha...

"Fresh" I've heard used for PCP, so I'll give em that.

I don't know wtf the green monsters are about lol To be honest, I don't think the guy doing the bitching or the author even know because you think they would take a paragraph to explain in article. By process of elimination, there must be some kind of mdma green monster related slang somewhere haha

Looks pretty damn good for something done by kids, I'll give em that. Realistically though, they must have known they'd get caught and it would get covered up eventually lol

I live in Mt Evelyn. The 2 lads that did the work are friends of mine. The work is on a community youth building, and the work was a project organized by Morrison House and sponsored by Bendigo Bank in order to engage the youth, help to stop the building getting illegal graffiti on it (as graffiti artist feel reluctant to tag over a mural), and basicaly brighten the place up. Ignorant Cr Tim Heenan has over exaggurated and had the work removed for no good reason. The green monsters are characters created by Vaugn Bode in comics and have for a long time been widely used in graffiti. The pink elephant is simply a character out of a colouring-in book, so the fact that it is pink is more likely because thats the colour paint he had. And the roadrunner is once again a simple cartoon character, and one that people can relate to without knowing much about graffiti culture. The word "fresh" was chosen simply because its a commonly used buzz-word by youth, especialy in the graffiti scene, and because they wanted people to think it looked "fresh". The mural was not intended to refer to drugs AT ALL!
It's a real shame its gone.

lets close down a few museums while we're at it. lets also ban a few musicians from playing.

fucking stupid.

i cant believe some people

side note......green monsters - isnt there a marijuana out there called "green monster?

I want to know how long the art was on the wall and enjoyed by the community until they found out it was about drugs (doubtful) and declared it "not art" and "not attractive".

For fuck's sake, my kindergarten music teacher always used to say that we needed to keep performing, "even if a pink elephant ran across the stage."

I am disgusted.

OH BTW: Ban swing dancing because because BE-FUCKING-CAUSE

Drugs are a great source for inspiration anyways if you ask me.

Fresh could be the pseudonym of the artist, or something else.

Trippy art looks cool and badass anyways.
