The Big & Dandy 'Memory and Psychedelics' Thread

The effects of drugs on memory?

Hey guys...

In recent experiences with DXM I've found it very easy to recall from memory certain details about places I've been and certain events that have occurred in my life dating back to my 2nd birthday... Has anybody else experienced this with DXM or any other drug?

I see DXM as a gateway to my own mind, and seeing as how memory is an integral part of the psyche, it makes sense. Just an interesting thought. Let me know =]

I haven't really noticed that with DXM however ever since using DXM I remember my dreams with amazing clarity and I have a few dreams a night and can recall them all vividly.

We all react differently, but it's interesting to say that the psychedelic experience can have a lowering effect on the unconscious barriers we have in place due to trauma or unresolved conflict, etc.

A very strong first and only DXM trip really fucked with my memory at the time. I couldn't remember shit for a few days afterward, and even a week or so I was still hazy.

I sometimes worry that my bad memory is a sign that I gave myself the "olney's lesions" that's an unproven theoretical side effect, but then just think... fuck it, it's probably just all the drinks I have and the weed I smoke :)

Don't expect it to last as NMDA antagonists interfere with memory storage (in the hippocampus I think - I'm rather tired, too much effort to go find a book to confirm it!), such that, IME, the normal chronological order of memories becomes a bit er, vague to put it mildly

I notice whenever i have DMT, i always think of random occurances that happened years and years ago. Makes me actually think i'm there.. then i start to come down and i get shit confused as to wtf is happening.

Have to love it though ^.^

Hallucinogens have never impaired my memory, but my trips do seem to stand out vividly in my memory, IDK if there is any connection though.

One thing is for sure though, if you want to have any memory at all don't fuck with benzos....haha I can't remember barely any of the entire year of 2007 because of those little guys.

bad for me

but u can get better memory with smart drugs :)
costly but
but if u put in as much $ keeping ya mind healthy as u do on drug i think u would be doing pretty well.
cannabis and antihistamines worst i recon for me and in general.
I recon i caused mine from when younger unhealthy benders on just lots of continuous poly drug use.
poly drug use like is regular for many; smoking weed, drinking and taking pills all in same night. I think that doing that a lot in short amount of time
Opiates having hurt my brain just mixing all the stuff with it too get more high or save dollars has though eg. antihistamines.

DMT has made it very easy for my friend to recall his dreams, they're so much more vivid than before.
Cannabis affects my friend's short term memory in a bad way.
That's the only noticeable differences he's noticed with his memory from drugs.

Prolonged cannabis use and DXM use affected my memory slightly after stopping. But clarity comes back after about a week or so of being clean. Olneys lesions? wasn't that theory disproven about DXM use?

My long term memory is still here, its the short term memory that fails quite often.

Insanity, Violence and Memory Loss from one tab?

I apologise in advance for the length, but i feel it necessary to go into some detail so that you can understand the insanity of this trip.
Just recently, myself and 4 other friends went out to my dealer/friends house in the mountains for a magical lsd trip. We all dosed between 2-4 hits of liquid lsd each, straight from the bottle, except for one friend who had never tripped before, he just had 1 drop.

Everything was going smoothly, chatting on the deck, playing with his pet snakes. It eventually got too cold so we moved inside and were chillin out in his living room listening to some psytrance. This was about 2hrs in, and P (first time tripper) started acting a little weird. Every 10-15mins he'd just look around the room a little confused and say "What's going on?" "Where are we?" or "What are we doing?"

After a while he got a bit frustrated and wandered out onto the deck, 2 other mates went out with him. We could hear them talking, and P just seemed to be babbling, nothing too uncommon for a first time tripper on a decent dose of lsd i thought. Then i hear yelling "OI! why'd you just hit me?"
Next thing P comes striding in obviously distressed, he grabbed my arm and with a look of desperation says to me that he doesnt no what's going on and he needs help. I tell him to lye down on the couch and just relax, he settles down and i just talk calmly to him.

Then suddenly his eyes snap open, he jumps up, i grab at his arm and he turns to look at me with empty eyes, lights were on but no ones home. He shrugs free of my grip and runs back out to the deck, next thing i hear is "OI! Why do u keep fucking hitting me!"
Now we're all really confused, we head out to the deck and P is laying into his best mate. We finally yank him off and he snaps out of it, and just reverts back to "What happened?" "Where are we?"

Over the next 30mins or so these violent episodes become more insane, a window was smashed, bottle thrown, anyone that comes near him he swings a fist at. It finally reaches a point of absolute insanity where he's screaming at the top of his voice "WAKE UUUUP!"
The owner of the house told me in no unclear terms we had to get him out of here, his landlord lives in the next house, and he has many illegal items lying around. We drag P out to the car, he's kicks at us violently, before purging all over my backseat. My friends try and hold him still, but he bites into his arm, his teeth were literally about to tear a chunk out of his arm. Somehow i get out of the driveway and start driving while on 2 hits of acid.

P is still screaming "WAKEE UP" and in moments of non-violence he frantically tells us that someone left the gas on and we have to wake up. He calms down over the next 30mins or so, and starts asking really odd questions. He keeps asking if he's dead and if we're taking him to hell. We finally reach another friends house and P walks in calmly and falls asleep.
Next day he has no recollection of anything that happened the night before, except that he recalls drifting in and out of a dream.

I was completely blown away by his reaction, i had no idea that 1 hit of lsd had the power to turn someone completely psychotic. Has anyone else ever heard of such an adverse reaction? The setting was warm and friendly, so maybe some deeply repressed psychological issue caused this? Or is it possible that he might be hypersensitive? I can think of no other explanation.

It sounds like he is either mentally unstable or he had a transient LSD-induced psychosis. Now before you say he's not unstable, that can be a latent issue.

This doesn't seem to happen often at all but it certainly is possible with a potent psychedelic... though often there are other reasons like psychological difficulties or other substances. Alcohol or benzo's come to mind, a lot of people take benzo's you might not even know he takes them as medication or something.
Hypersensitivity is also possible yes.

Sounds like a classic "bad trip". Many reasons behind them. Like Solipsys stated, "LSD-induced psychosis". I have seen it happen twice. Both times were brought on the user because of their lack of "respect" for the drugs power. Or possibly their lack of mental solitude to discern reality from mind altering chemical.

What I mean is this. One had limited experience with booze and figured LSD would be "no biggie". Preface: we were 15. Well everything was fine until "Peak Trip" the phone rings and the fool answers and forgets how to talk (it was his mom on the other end). All down hill from there. He totally freaked out bad and could not be calmed down. He then became very violent (in a very defensive kind of way, i.e. stay the fuck away!). Needless to say, parents involved and not a situation I wanted to be dealing with while frying just as hard as that dumbass. Smiling and trying to explain that he just couldn't hold his "liquor". Ummm… right....

Fast forward 6 years and take 20 year old non-everything (booze, pot, cigs) that decides he wants to “expand his mind” and try LSD. Not a good idea. Chillin in the forest, middle of nowhere, and this fools starts freaking out. Screaming and yelling, crying and cussing. It was truly a sad site to see. Now the f’d part. This guy was a friend of a friend so I hardly even knew the dude. My so called “buddy” that brought the bad trip with him is just sitting there laughing his ass off. Meanwhile Mr. Bad Trip was totally freaking out to the point talking about killing himself. My life sucks, why am I here, like a bad drunk only way, way scarier.

My point is this, I will never trio with someone that is not experienced. I have heard stories of people that have done hundreds of tabs before one day “BAM!” Mr. bad trip.

Until then, Fry tell I die.

lol... maybe he doesn't trust you guys or something, that was really funny reading

I certainly wouldn't call it funny at all. It sounds (and is) horryfying. If you've ever actually been in that state, which unfortuantely I have, its fucking terrible.

NEVER underestimate the power of LSD; for probably 99% of people who use it, 99% of the time it will be great. However, that small percetnage that happen to lose the plot- well, it certainly makes me think about acid twice. :\

Sad sorta tale really.

I think alcohol or benzo's are unlikely, alcohol rubbed him up the wrong way at a young age so he doesnt drink, just smokes alot of weed, and being a fit, happy, healthy teenager i doubt he's on any benzo medication.

The thing that really gets me is that he wasnt himself. You could call his name or nudge him and he wouldnt respond, he literally thought he was in a dream, about to die, and his body was running purely on survival instinct. Swinging punches at his best mates, then 2mins later he's scared and confused with no memory of what just happened.

You're spot on Swilow, being in the depths of an acid trip myself it was easily one of the scariest nights of my life. I guess he's just the one in a million, and i dont think he'll be touching psychadelics again any time soon.

Sounds like intense dissociation and depersonalization then...
perhaps it was too big a dose for his first time?

i doubt it was any form of dissociation. Sounds more like a pshcyotic episode brought on by the drug.

The only reason i say its not a dissociation matter is because i suffr from dp/dr badly from HPPd and i never act like that.
