The Travel Thread - Second Destination

I have all the time in the world to get over the jetlag but jetlag really makes me feel bad, I remember how awful I felt when I arrived in HK last summer and that was flying business class which made the whole journey painless.

It's so hard for me to regulate my sleeping pattern when I go abroad because I'm already a poor sleeper and my body clock getting all fucked up makes things so much worse. I arrived in Bangkok a couple years ago having been awake for 24hrs, stayed out till midnight local time then decided to head to bed. Slept for 1hr then woke up and was awake all night from there on in, my body clock just wouldn't adjust properly and spend the whole holiday in a sleepless state. :\

It won't help I'll be staying in hostels in dorm rooms, will get no fucking sleep! :(

Aviation Fuels: Supply, Economics and Trading
Singapore, 20-22 July 2009

This three-day workshop provides an overview of the economics of the aviation fuels market. The course covers the key building blocks of knowledge for anyone needing to understand the jet fuel and aviation gasoline markets. Topics explored include the basics of aviation fuel production and refining processes, aviation fuels quality and specifications, supply and logistics, market fundamentals of supply and demand, jet fuel trading, pricing mechanisms, contracts and the management of price risk.

I have to accompany some young whippersnappers( ie 3 total cunts) on this jaunt, ( thats what you get for saying you want to get into energy trading and you want to "learn more")

Anyone know any cool places to hang out in Singapore , would be much appeciated.

Spade, as the flight is going to be over 20 hours, does it really make that much difference when you leave? Personally I'd like to arrive in Aus around afternoon time to give me enough time to find accom and then go out on the piss.

LM; best drinking I found in Singapore was Boat Quay, near the Fullerton. Some decent outdoor bars. Found some dodgy hooker places too, but can't remember where they were and they were pretty shite. There is also another quay place for boozing, and has got some clubs, but its not as good as Boat Quay.

Kid I guess the arrival time in Aus will be the deciding factor actually. Obviously don't want to end up there in the middle of the night nor first thing in the morning. I'll probably book a hostel or arrange a couchsurf for the first couple nights before I leave the UK anyway, easily done and saves me fannying about looking for some place to stay (not that it would be difficult as I know Sydney anyway) once I arrive and am fucked.

EDIT: Just checked if I fly out from here in the morning I arrive in Sydney around 7pm the following day (28hr flight), if I fly from here at night I arrive in Sydney at 5am. I don't think I want to arrive there at 5am as it means I'd need to try and stay awake for a whole day plus no doubt I couldn't check into accomodation at that time.

Aren't you going to need an address in Australia, to give to immigration? I'd suggest booking a hostel or hotel before you leave.

Lol on all the immigration forms I had to fill out while flying around Asia asked for an address, always scribbled 'backpacker area' and no one batted an eyelid.

Don't think you need one if your going on a WHV. If I do I'll just write down the address of any random hostel, I doubt they check it. Like I said I will book a hostel before I leave anyway, gonna sort out my first couple of nights accomodation so I'm not wandering about looking for somewhere.

I've been thinking about booking a holiday for a couple of weeks now and, remembering something Spade said on this forum, I had a little look see and found it's eminently possible to get to Tel Aviv for under £300 without even having to book that far in advance (I could go in August for about £290)

Now, being an ignorant son of a bitch, I was under the impression that it was more or less impossible to travel around Israel for longer than about five minutes with being blown up or shot at but, having done a bit of research, it doesn't look like that's the case. In fact, Tel Aviv looks pretty fucking great, tbh.

So, I'm wondering, does anyone have any experience of having been to Tel Aviv or Israel in general?

Most parts of Israel are fairly safe, just don't go near the west bank / gaza or any nearbye towns and you'll be fine. :D

They all carry guns apparently which is worrying. :\

Never been actually been though.

i heard israel is shite as a holiday destination to be honest, i can understand if you were jewish and felt the need to visit it but there are so many other places where id imagine would be more appealing.

I think it'd be pretty fascinating for a number of reasons, quite a unique place with a very distinct culture I'd imagine. Very cosmopolitan and a wide variety of different nationalities too I'd think, would be interesting to visit. And seeing as it's so cheap to fly there right now then why not.

if i was going to go somewhere in the middle east it would be iran

my mate went there for a month, it was also cheap and he loved it

i think the fact that he was irish made his visit more welcoming though as irish and arabs seem to have alot of strong similarities when it comes to history etc

And you can hang out with Hezbollah! :D

KidThe did you do any fruit picking whilst in Oztrailya? If so, how was it?

if i was going to go somewhere in the middle east it would be iran

I'd love to go to Iran too, I saw Tehran on some travel show and it looked pretty fascinating. No booze though. :\

Hezbolla? hmmmm, maybe we could hang out with the americans and blow up some 'towel heads' while we are at it eh ;)

anyway heres some pics from my mates facebook from iran

Hmmm, some good replies.

Lebanon/Iran sound good too. I'm a big fan of Iranian people, one of my best mates is from there so I know a fair few Iranians in the UK and, by and large, they give me jokes. I have heard they're well friendly when you visit too. Lebanon also appeals though. Where I used to live in Brazil had a large Lebanese-Brazilian community and they also seem like a fairly sound bunch of people.

Anyone got any rough ideas on how expensive it would be to travel to either of these places or good reccomendations on where to look?

Also, from what I can tell, Tel Aviv gets a pretty good write-up. Seems expensive though, but then you don't have to spend all the time in the city itself I suppose. I fucking love Maccabi Tel Aviv's fans, too, so I'd definitely want to take in a game at the Bloomfield Stadium:

EDIT: just seen those last two pics, Iran photos look dope, flight price doesn't seem too bad but probably not quite cheap enpugh for an impulse holiday either.
