in festival related news:

seth troxler's famously debaucherous old miami party will indeed be taking place again this year on monday morning.

neon camisole optional but encouraged.

Like every year, I will say I'm going to be there, but we'll see. I have a hard time justifying 40 dollars to get in when it used to be zero.

It kind of irritates me whenever I hear someone use the good ol "DEMF was so much better when it was free" argument.

Could you in any way imagine it being a plausible business option in any way? The City basically washed it's hands of the whole thing after the second year when those kids died in the fountain.

Detroit doesn't have the demographics to make it a worthwhile investment for any company, and IF it was free, the only acts would be second and third tier Deejays that no one would even make an attempt to see.

And honestly the cover is REALLY minuscule for the type of event that it is. Look at Ultra, or WEMF.

And finally, do you recall what happened when Saunderson and Craig tried taking the entire thing on by themselves, out of pocket? One of the saddest moments in all of EDM was seeing the Great Carl Craig have to take donations at the main stage.

bitching about the cover is soooo 2005 ;) im glad there's a cover to keep out the sketchy people who cant sort out a few dollars for a pass... fewer people bumming cigarettes and selling bunk shit 8)

The first couple were special for me, because I'd go down there and see everyone from my high school, and you'd see the types of people who you'd know would never be there unless it was free and at Hart Plaza

everythings better when it was free, but like dissonance said, it just wouldn't have lasted.

and as far as those kids dieing, they did a damn good job keepin quiet about that one, because I never heard about it.

Please, I'd love to see where I said DEMF was better when it was free.

Remember, I am a Michigan resident. 40 dollars is a god-send sometimes, and could be spent on something a little more...important, perhaps? If I have the extra money, you can bet I'll be all over the Plaza. Memorial Day weekend is the only weekend out of every year that I actually look forward to because of this festival.

I was kind of venting because every time DEMF comes up there's always a "yeah, it's alright now, but when it was free it was amazing".

I mean personally $40 isn't that much money, i mean eat out less, clip coupons, etc.

Granted people also throw in the obligatory $100-$200 to the cost for afterparties, food, drink, and party favors. But there are a ton of free parties, I guess it's all about planning.

Oh and ill try and pull up the story about the fatality in the fountain, but if you notice, they turn the water off after the sun sets, and police presence is more dispersed.

That fountain is no joke, I had an encounter with it during a Hoe-Down when I thought it was a good idea to dance around the rim, lost my balance and fell in. The jets pushing down on you is a hundred or so pounds of pressure, not to mention it's a big ass drain so not all of the water drains immediately so you can drown. If I were in worse shape and didn't have the ability to pull myself out, or was a little more wasted to the point where i lacked motor skills, I might not be here telling this amusing anecdote.

$40 for the entire weekend festival? I spent close to that per ticket for atb and Infected Mushroom and really only was there for IM. $40 is NOTHING for as good of a lineup as this is.

Heaven forbid people pay for quality.

if you've never been to Detroit, I can recommend only two places to visit but neither of them are in the city:
1). the drive-in theater at Ford and Wyoming in Dearborn
2). and Dr. Fun's party store on Michigan Ave near Beech Daly in Inkster (nitrous)

is City Club still there? haha

Like every year, I will say I'm going to be there, but we'll see. I have a hard time justifying 40 dollars to get in when it used to be zero.

Times change should be justification enough.

As well as it had been proven, three years in a row, that the festival could not continue as a free event.

Also, there were $25 weekend tickets floating around for awhile. Then $35.

I don't know about you, but I routinely see 7-hour events with far less of a line-up charging $25 and $35. So 4 12-hour days... $40... that's $10 a day.

And really, $40 [plus lodging of course] for a little mini-vacation is nothing, especially split between 2 or 3 close mates.

^ Lodging isn't an issue; I can walk to Hart Plaza and be there in an hour. It's money. I haven't worked in a year and have other things I have to pay for before I can drop money on the festival. So far, though, it looks like I will actually have the money, so that is exciting.
