Insomniacs out there? what do you take?

Was going to start a new thread but I'll just latch on here. For the last two weeks I have been experiencing extreme anxiety with periods of insomnia..such as the last two nights when I have not slept. I am and have been taking 25 mg xr adderall for the last two years...and I'm hooked and pretty much have to take it to get school work done/be productive. So there is the delima: I need the addy to do work, but I need to be able to relax when I'm done. I have finals coming up beginning of next week (which accounts for my sever anxiety and such), so I need to study, but if I cant fall asleep tonight I don't see how I will be coherent enough to take three finals. So ANYONE, with ANYTHING that can help me out, please let me know. One more stipulation is the fact that I go to school 5 hours away from home, so it's not like I can just drive to my doctor and hit him up for some heavy hitting pills--I might be able to get my hands on some light stuff like xanax to hold me over till I got home but its not a sure thing. So thanks in advance.

What's Gravol? Benadryl does promote quality sleep by the way. They cause the full cycle of natural sleep stages a person needs to feel refreshed. Benzo's and nearly all other sleeping aids which owe their effects due to GABA receptor binding, lack stage 3 and 4 sleep, which are necesarry for a refreshing nights worth of sleep. Anti-histamines provide sleep with normal stage 3 and 4 sleep, and in time cycle's the body would go through when not taking any sleep aids and having a normal, natural night of sleeping.

^Word to that. Benadryl works wonders for my insomnia. I just have to try to take it before 11:00 and fall asleep before 12:00 if I need to wake up early, because it can make me quite drowsy in the morning if I take it too late.

I really need to get prescribed Lunesta. I've only taken it once or twice I think, but it was the best sleep aid I've ever tried.

10 mg ambien is more than enugh realy(take it 10-15 min before bed). been using it for 5months and it still works like a charm
here is a tip that might help it working better when you go to bed, Lay on your back with your hands on the sides completely still even if you get an itch just ignore it, soon you will get the floating effect or the feeling off your mattress moving in waves then just enjoy the feeling think about floating away or something nice it might help you. or this might just be how i feel the effect of the sleep aid:)

Yeah, whoever said Seroquel, that really works. I don't have insomnia but I take a 300 mg pill or something whenever I'm coming down on some upper, it really knocks you out, it's about impossible to stay awake when it kicks in, even on a lower dose.

Ok I know this is an older thread, but I have been dealing with insomnia for years now:
I have been given trazadone, rozerem, buspar, seroquel (I later wanted to strangle the dr who gave me seroquel, it felt like I had a lobotomy the next day, although yes, I did go to sleep)
I am now carefullyself-medicating with either klonopin, valium, or mogadon (benzos with long half-life) - whatever is easier to come by, though I prefer the mogadon. Trick is to NOT take something every night or your tolerance will build. I usually just deal with shitty sleep, then on nights before where I absolutely have to be functional at work (like giving a presentation or something) I will take an aforementioned benzo to get some good rest. Just don't overdo it. Also I take sublingual 2mg melatonin every night with a 5-htp/valerian root mixture.

However, I must add that my shitty sleep stems from deep emotional issues (fiance and mother both dying months apart) which led me to fall into a substantial daily usage of dope/oxycontin,which as we all know, robs you of your sleep when you quit. So, I'm done with that, but those emotional issues are still there, however I cannot find a doctor who will actually give me anything to help with sleep, I guess I seem like a drug seeker, but that's okay, I can get what I need elsewhere :) Thanks for nothing, doctors of america!

edit: marijuana used to work well for me in this regard, but thanks to probation, I can no longer smoke (well for half the month at least :) )

200mg of seroquel does wonders for my panic disorder, and also regulates my sleep patterns. Whats nice about the medicine is that falling to sleep feels very natural unlike otc sleep pills or medicines like ambien.

See that's so interesting to me how seroquel affects people so differently....I have friends who swear by it and say its great for sleep and makes them feel balanced. When I took it, and I only took 25mg, yeah I passed out, but not in a pleasant way - it felt like I had taken a thousand benadryls :) and the next day, I felt so horrible and out of it I couldn't even go to work. It felt like my brain was mush! So I tossed them joints into the garbage and cursed the doctor who gave them to me! I'd rather just be tired than feel so....wierd the next day. But I'm glad it worked for you - guess everybody's brain is just different! Plus I don't think doctors should just be giving away seroquel just for insomnia - I think there needs to be additional reasons/cause to prescribe seroquel other than "I just can't sleep."

JASS92, did your primary care physician/GP diagnose your tardive dyskinesia? Or did you yourself come to the conclusion you had TD based on the symptoms you observed?

I think it depends on the cause of the insomnia.

Everything below should be combined with exercise, regularly waking at the same time (regardless of how late you were partying/working), avoiding stimulants after 1400 or so, and following other behavioral guidelines. So, that in mind:

Anxiety caused by work, relationships, etc.? Insomnia caused by a legit prescribed med? No abuse of other drugs?

Then:

I'd say a hypnotic is your best bet. Little if no effect on sleep architecture. But you must use them properly. That is, you must not eat 3 hours before taking it, and you must actually be in bed when you take it. Fuck around with it, and you'll soon find it far less useful as a sleep aid, and perhaps an additional problem in itself.

I'm a little surprised to see benzos so highly recommended on here. They do have a sedating/relaxing effect, and can make it easier for people to fall asleep, but they distort your sleep architecture (increasing stage 1 and 2 sleep, to the detriment of other stages), with the result of a less restful sleep. They also have a higher abuse potential. That said, some sleep is better than no sleep. This isn't a great option though.

Now... if you're abusing other drugs which are affecting your ability to sleep, then the answer is more complicated (not saying that those who are taking prescribed med for a condition are abusing of course; lots of legit prescriptions can cause insomnia). Any treatment of insomnia has to occur in tandem with eliminating the abuse; otherwise you're likely to just add to your problem.

Finally, there are many behavioral things you can do which are highly effective. I really like the advice above about lying down, and just focusing on how comfortable you feel. That's actually worked for me, and I have frequently had difficulty sleeping. I'd also recommend something like progressive muscle relaxation (google it), or some type of meditation (I'm not a new-age type by any means, but outcome studies are outcome studies, and it works).

Keep in mind that your behavior and thoughts will have effects on your brain that can be more profound, and longer-lasting, than that of many medications. If it helps, think of the behavioral or cognitive techniques as simply another drug.

Finally, I can't stress this enough, and I don't think it's been stressed enough in the thread above:

If you start taking megadoses of benzos or similar drugs to sleep, you will have the long-term effect of worsening your insomnia. If you start abusing hypnotics you use to sleep, you will diminish their effectiveness, and you're well on your way to having that tool eliminated from your toolbox.

Insomnia sucks. It's a pain in the ass. But it's not fatal (rare cases that seem concentrated in certain Italian family lines aside), and it is treatable. Medication alone is not likely to be a panacea, though it can be truly helpful. You're going to have to take behavioral steps as well.

Remember that your goal is simply to get a good night's sleep.

i take 30-90mg of temazepam(restoril), or 25-75mg promethazine. and sometimes a little oxycodone to help me slip into a slumber. ambien lunesta and seroquel never worked for me

I'm going thru opiate withdrawal right now, and a dose of 1050mg of pregablin(lyrica) has really helped knock me out.

if you want to sleep like a fucking baby for 12 hours without waking up, take 4mg of Xanax, 70mg of Valium, 15mg of K-pins, take them with one beer, dont take it all at once tho.

Trust me, you will sleep so good.

hahahahaahaha

and then the guy who quotes u and says Wtf!!??hahahahhahahahaa

Good ol' Hydrocodone for sleep. Not only do I get amazing sleep with it, but every morning after, I recall a few times during the night where I would wake up (or maybe I wasn't awake...?) and feel really, really good, similar to the body high from mushrooms. Do I just sound crazy, or does anyone know what I'm talking about?
